  • Journeys of research, emotions and belonging : an exploratory analysis of the motivations and experience of ancestral tourists
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Hospitality and Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1502-2250 .- 1502-2269. ; 20:1, s. 85-103
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ancestral tourism and amateur genealogy are popular phenomena, driving members of diasporas to reconnect with their ancestral roots and discover family histories. Tourism researchers have not yet paid much attention to Scandinavian countries as ancestral destinations. After waves of emigration, there are now millions of individuals with Scandinavian roots in countries like the United States. We explore the demand-side of American ancestral tourism to Sweden. Our findings stem from nine interviews with Swedish-Americans who have been ancestral tourists in Sweden. Ancestral tourists live highly emotional experiences dependent on factors occurring prior to and during travels and involving many sites and stakeholders beyond the control of the destination. Our study reveals the importance for ancestral tourists of establishing a network of allies through genealogy research for their experience in Sweden to be positive. The accumulation of family memories and of information gained through genealogy research makes ancestral travels to Sweden a highly personal endeavor, rather than an elusive reconnection to a distant heritage. Yet reconnecting with the ancestral homeland and establishing a sense of belonging to its society also matters to these tourists, though cultural stereotypes influence this experience. We conclude with recommendations for destination development and future research.

  • Deltagande forskning i socialt arbete
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Socialvetenskaplig tidskrift. - : Linköping University. - 1104-1420 .- 2003-5624. ; 29:3-4, s. 259-268

  • Swedish private forest owners’ perceptions and intentions with respect to adopting exotic tree species
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Forest Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 1612-4669 .- 1612-4677. ; 132:3, s. 433-444
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Swedish forest growth can be increased through intensive forestry practices, enabling an increased use of forest biomass for climate-change mitigation. However, the diffusion of such practices depends on the forest owners’ adoption of them. We study Swedish private forest owners’ perceptions and intentions with respect to increasing forest growth by adopting exotic tree species. The results of a mail-in questionnaire survey show that although a majority of forest owners desire increasing forest growth, most owners have only a basic understanding of exotic tree species and a smaller proportion is interested in adopting them. The intention to adopt exotics seems to depend on the perceived performance of the species with respect to the economic aspects of forest management rather than on environmental or recreational concerns. Whereas a knowledge gap among the private forest owners regarding how to increase forest growth is implied, forest owners with higher self-rated knowledge of forestry and exotics have stronger intentions to adopt such species.

  • Affect and performance in ancestral tourism : stories of everyday life, personal heritage, and the family
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Heritage Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1743-873X .- 1747-6631. ; 17:1, s. 20-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    •  Heritage tourism scholars have used notions of performativity and affectto study the ways tourists actively construct and assign meaning to theirexperience of heritage. However, these concepts remain under-exploredin the context of personal heritage tourism. Personal heritage tourismreflects an interest to experience a heritage of personal affectiverelevance, acknowledging that perceptions of heritage are fluid andsubjective. I contribute insight into the conceptualization of personalheritage tourism by exploring the performances and affectiveentanglements that make genealogy meaningful in the present duringtravels to an ancestral homeland. Through a qualitative study ofSwedish-American ancestral tourists, I propose that processes ofmeaning making in ancestral tourism include enacting the family, partaking in everyday life, and connecting with mundane physicalelements of the past. These performances unfold at sites historical andcurrent in the ancestral homeland. Personal heritage tourism thus findsmeaning though affective entanglements with the past, but alsothrough social interactions and mundane activities based in a familiarpresent. These affective entanglements occur at different locations, notall directly connected to the personal past.

  • From Sustainability to the Anthropocene : Reflections on a Pedagogy of Tourism Research for Planetary Attachment
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Teaching in Travel & Tourism. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1531-3220 .- 1531-3239. ; 20:3, s. 173-189
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Though tourism research has become more value-laden in its scholarship and pedagogy, there is still a risk that tourism higher educationcurricula (re)produce uncritical views of society and sustainability.I argue that research methodology courses and assignments basedon data collection can legitimize the use of sustainable tourism solutions based in generalizations and abstractions, rather than encouragethe dialogue and reflectivity needed for major change in times of crisis. They also risk promoting a self-serving agenda where researchers (re)produce their success in the knowledge economy. In light of thelimitations of the sustainability concept in time of planetary crisis,I look into the possibilities of a tourism research pedagogy in theAnthropocene by uncovering arguments for plurality and deliberationin knowledge production. Social scientists need to address questionsof ethics in times of crisis. Conjointly, the Anthropocene highlights ourplanetary attachment, where human responsibility and social actionare imminent.

  • Performing genealogy through travel narratives
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Annals of Tourism Research. - : Elsevier. - 0160-7383 .- 1873-7722. ; 86:January
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Tourism scholars have yet to consider ancestral tourism as a stepping-stone in genealogical identity formation. Amateur genealogists use information available to them about their ancestors and the past to form stories of the self in the present. Through a study of the travel narratives of Swedish-American ancestral tourists, I link the concept of genealogical identities with theories of performance, impression management and narrative identity to explore this phenomenon. The findings reveal how ancestral tourists bring into existence their genealogical identities through the performative narration of their ancestral travels. Authenticity in these experiences emerges through the presentation of a coherent story of the self that gives off desired impressions of kinship and ethnicity, subsequently legitimizing a genealogical identity.

  • The effects of workplace learning on employee health
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the International Conference on Intellectual Capital, Knowledge Management and Organisational Learning, ICICKM. - : Academic Conferences and Publishing International Limited. - 9781912764099 ; , s. 143-150
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The purpose of this paper is to examine associations between workplace learning and the health of the employees. In addition, connections to flow, sense of coherence, sexual harassment and workplace bullying are investigated. A questionnaire was constructed including previously tested constructs of workplace learning, workplace health and flow as well as new constructs concerning Sense of Coherence, sexual harassment and workplace bullying. The survey was delivered to a sample of Swedish secondary school teachers. 311 questionnaires were returned. They were analysed with correlation analyses and cluster analysis. The findings indicate significant associations between workplace learning and workplace health as well as Sense of Coherence, flow and workplace bullying. However, there was no significant correlation between sexual harassment and any of the other factors except workplace health. On the other hand, workplace health was found to be significantly related to flow and sense of coherence. The research implications of the findings are that workplace learning can be a means of improving the health of the employees as well as decreasing the risk of workplace bullying. Moreover, workplace learning may contribute to flow which in turn is also connected to workplace health. The findings are related to a theoretical framework with contributions from workplace learning, positive psychology and workplace health promotion. The implications for practitioners are that there is an additional reason to focus on workplace learning in organisations, namely the prospect of a healthier workplace. No previous research has addressed the associations between workplace learning, flow, bullying and health and in general, research into connections between learning and health at workplaces is very limited. Thus, the study has certain originality.

  • The relationship between quality management and employee health : exploring the underlying dimensions
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Productivity and Quality Management. - Olney, Bucks , UK : InderScience Publishers. - 1746-6474 .- 1746-6482. ; 5:2, s. 109-123
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The first purpose of this study was to verify the relationship between workplace health and quality management, particularly the values ‘leadership commitment’ and ‘participation of everybody’ whose importance previous research has pointed to. The second purpose of the study was to examine the constituents and mechanics of the relationships between health and those values. A case study was carried out in a Swedish manufacturing company using data triangulation in the form of in-depth interviews and focus-group interviews on three levels. The findings show that the perceptions of the quality management values were significantly correlated with the employees’ perception of their health. This finding substantiates earlier studies indicating a relationship between quality and health. Important dimensions of ‘leadership commitment’ and ‘participation of everybody’, regarding health, were identified and described in models. The paper provides additional understanding of the connection between quality management and health, particularly regarding the role of leadership.
