  • A Reconsideration of Two "Welfare Paradises" : Research and Policy Responses to Men's Violence in Denmark and Sweden
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Men and Masculinities. - : Sage Publications. - 1097-184X .- 1552-6828. ; 12:2, s. 155-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article compares the situation in Denmark and Sweden regarding research and policy making around the issue of men-s violence to women and children. It does so by drawing on two comprehensive reviews of academic and policy data in those countries that were part of a broader European Union-funded project. Although the picture emerging from this comparison is complex, the overall conclusion is that in Sweden over recent years many more examples can be found of a critical, power-oriented approach than is the case in Denmark.

  • Användning av utvärderingar inom Arbetsförmedlingen
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Arbetsmarknad & Arbetsliv. - Karlstad : Karlstads universitet. - 1400-9692 .- 2002-343X. ; 22:1, s. 6-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Challenges in the Guardianship of Unaccompanied Minors Seeking Asylum
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Children's Rights. - : Brill. - 0927-5568 .- 1571-8182. ; 26:3, s. 489-509
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we explore the research literature relating to the guardianship of unaccompanied minors seeking asylum. In particular, we seek to find out what type of dilemmas have been identified by research concerning the guardianship of unaccompanied minors, and the focus that the literature has therefore taken. A comprehensive search of identified databases was conducted. Ultimately, 38 publications were selected for analysis. The review was qualitative and inductive. The results of the review suggest that research has identified and focused on challenges in the form of diverging policy such as gaps and inconsistencies in guardianship institutions, as well as challenges in balancing different objectives concerning the guardianship role, such as conflicting interest in the guardianship assignment or between different actors involved in protecting the child’s interest. The conclusion is that different configurations of guardianship institutions, as well as the identified challenges for practice, appear to be related to the welfare state model. Therefore, future research concerning guardianship for unaccompanied minors needs to move beyond legal sources and policy documents by focusing on empirically informed research on the relationship between child care/protection, principles of assessing the best interest of the child and the welfare state systems.

  • 'I can play!' : Young children's perceptions of health
  • 2006
  • Ingår i: Pediatric Rehabilitation. - London : Taylor & Francis. - 1363-8491 .- 1464-5270. ; 9:3, s. 275-284
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Health is today viewed as a multi-dimensional concept partly conceptualized independent from not being ill. The aim of this study was to gain knowledge of how young children perceive health. Interviews were conducted with 68 children (4–5 years), within their pre-school setting, with the help of a semi-structured interview guide. A multi-dimensional perspective represented by the health dimensions of the International Classification of Functioning, Disability and Health (ICF) was used in a manifest deductive content analysis. The children's statements were categorized and placed under one of the four health dimensions, body, activity, participation and environment. A latent content analysis was applied to identify underlying themes in the manifest categories. The results revealed that young children perceive health as a multi-dimensional construct, largely related to being engaged, i.e. to be able to perform wanted activities and participate in a supportive every-day context. This implies that improvements of child engagement should be emphasized in health promotion and to a greater extent be the central focus of health interventions for young children.

  • Why one goes to school : what school means to young people entering foster care
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Child & Family Social Work. - : Wiley-Blackwell Publishing Inc.. - 1356-7500 .- 1365-2206. ; 16:1, s. 43-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this interpretative childhood study of 17 boys and girls 13 – 16 years old placed in foster families, the experiences and attitudes towards school are explored. The importance of school as an arena for both learning and socialization is emphasized. Data were collected through interviews, network maps, and text answers via mobile phone (‘beepers’). Their educational improvement was based on their understanding of scholastic achievement as meaningful for their future, stability in daily routines, and the involvement and support of family, peers, and teachers. Access to peers at school is important, and group activities facilitate this. Because of their background, foster youth can also be exposed to bullying from peers. Both learning and socialization at school affect their self-esteem.

  • Referrals from home care to emergency hospital care : basis for decisions.
  • 2003
  • Ingår i: Journal of Clinical Nursing. - : Wiley. - 0962-1067 .- 1365-2702. ; 12:1, s. 28-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Swedish government implemented a reform, the Adel reform, in the care of older citizens in 1992, so that the communities where older people live became responsible for their care and housing. Nurses were appointed to make sure that older people were given accurate care and to act as supervisors for nurses' aides. In this study, 10 Registered Nurses from community home care services and four consultant head physicians in primary care were interviewed in order to illuminate what they thought influenced nurses' decisions to refer patients for emergency treatment and what support they requested to facilitate the decision. Content analysis showed the necessity of feeling secure in one's role as a community nurse. The categories that developed were: own competence, knowledge about the patient and a supportive working environment. The main theme was To feel safe in one's role - a basis for decision-making. High demands were put on the nurses' competence and their burden of responsibility became too great. This influenced decision-making negatively, if nurses felt that they were lacking in their own personal competence. Training in documentation for the nurses was required, as well as the need for organizations to provide staff with sufficient time for accurate documentation. A greater input of nursing and medical care was required to make it possible for patients to be cared for at home if they so wished. Respondents described considerable deficiencies in their working environment and in co-workers' competence, and nurses' professional roles within the community were not made clear. If these problems were remedied, this would improve working conditions, increase understanding, and reduce feelings of uncertainty among decision-makers.

  • Visual fields in children with attention-deficit / hyperactivity disorder before and after treatment with stimulants.
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Acta ophthalmologica. - : Wiley. - 1755-3768 .- 1755-375X. ; 86:3, s. 259-64
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PURPOSE: This study aimed to evaluate visual function in children with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), to correlate these data with the morphology of the optic nerve, and to find out if and how psychostimulant medication affects visual functions. METHODS: The visual acuity (VA) and visual fields (VFs) of 18 children with ADHD (two girls and 16 boys), aged 6-17 years, were examined before and after treatment with psychostimulants. A control group, consisting of 24 children (nine girls and 15 boys), aged 7-18 years, were examined twice to evaluate the repeatability of the tests and the learning effect. Fundus photographs were analysed by digital planimetry. RESULTS: Visual acuity increased significantly (p = 0.0039) in the ADHD group after treatment. The difference between the two VF examinations was significantly larger in the ADHD group compared with the control group (p = 0.036). Significantly more ADHD subjects had subnormal VF results without stimulants, compared with controls (p = 0.0043), but with stimulants the difference was no longer significant. CONCLUSIONS: Children with ADHD showed better VA and VF results with than without psychostimulant medication.

  • Theorizing the subjectivizing powers of market-based technologies : Looking beyond coercion and seduction
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Critical Perspectives on Accounting. - : Elsevier. - 1045-2354 .- 1095-9955. ; 99
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Existing theorizations on how the proliferation of market-based technologies within universities come to foster so-called academic performer subjectivities have mainly drawn attention to their coercive and seductive powers. However, while these theorizations help explain why researchers either unwillingly adapt to, or identify with and cherish, their neoliberal ideals, they are less useful to explain recent empirical results showing that many researchers willingly comply yet are very critical of the very same ideals. Drawing upon an interview study of Swedish researchers, we address this theoretical gap in the literature by analytically disentangling three important qualities of the technologies per se, in terms of them producing performance numbers characterized by Specificness, Ongoingness, and Emptiness (SOE). These three qualities do not only have the dual power to interchangeably provoke bitter and sweet feelings, but also to foster the adoption of an academic performer subjectivity. In fact, it is precisely by provoking bittersweet feelings that these qualities break the sharp edges of pure coercion and seduction, thereby fostering a type of low-affective, yet highly persuasive form of reasoning about pros and cons of market-based technologies, which make their neoliberal ideals seem acceptable and reasonable at the end of the day.

  • Likhet inför lagen
  • 2005
