  • Socio-techno-ecological transition dynamics in the re-territorialization of food production : the case of wild berries in Sweden
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Sustainability Science. - : Springer. - 1862-4065 .- 1862-4057.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent geopolitical and economic crises underline the need for a European transition towards a more sustainable food system. Scholars and policymakers have called for a re-territorialization of food production to strike a better balance between local, regional and global value chains. This paper explores the role of re-territorialization through an analysis of the emergence, development and current transformation of the Swedish wild berry value chain. The analysis combines the multi-level perspective on sustainability transitions with a socio-techno-ecological system approach and draws on interviews, informal conversations, participant observations and a range of secondary sources. The resulting case narrative shows how processes of de-territorialization may result in regimes that fail to address sustainability potential and problems. It also highlights that processes of re-territorialization challenge established regimes by promoting niches that represent different, albeit complementary, value chain configurations. Apart from a rich empirical narrative that brings useful knowledge to stakeholders to the Swedish wild berry value chain, the paper contributes to the theoretical understanding re-territorialization, shows how the ecological dimension can be accounted for with the multi-level perspective on sustainability transitions and presents a number of general policy implications.

  • Baby steps or stage dive into a critical design dialogue
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: IxD&A. - 1826-9745 .- 2283-2998. ; :32, s. 38-47
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper puts forward the early, practical actions “in context” that can begin to sensitize, orient, expand, and constrain design dialogue at the outset of a design effort. Drawing on a case of “breaching experiments” in “non-places” we explore a “first approximation” of interventionist participation into the context of future interactive & responsive design interventions. By introducing a design journey, we have shed a light on how a human-centric approach, applied to the context of Human Building Interaction (HBI), can support an interventionist design dialogue between people and designed environment through processes of stirring up what’s beyond ‘norms’ of interaction.

  • Duopoly insurers’ incentives for data quality under a mandatory cyber data sharing regime
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Computers & security (Print). - : Elsevier Ltd. - 0167-4048 .- 1872-6208. ; 131
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We study the impact of data sharing policies on cyber insurance markets. These policies have been proposed to address the scarcity of data about cyber threats, which is essential to manage cyber risks. We propose a Cournot duopoly competition model in which two insurers choose the number of policies they offer (i.e., their production level) and also the resources they invest to ensure the quality of data regarding the cost of claims (i.e., the data quality of their production cost). We find that enacting mandatory data sharing sometimes creates situations in which at most one of the two insurers invests in data quality, whereas both insurers would invest when information sharing is not mandatory. This raises concerns about the merits of making data sharing mandatory.

  • Value Chains vs. Ecosystems : Current Perspectives among Swedish SMEs Entering the Interconnected World of IoT
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Advances in Transdisciplinary Engineering at SPS2020. - : IOS Press BV. - 9781614994398 ; , s. 489-500, s. 489-500
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Smart connected industrial products and the Internet of Things (IoT) are transforming the industrial business landscape in a radical way. To reach the full potential of IoT-Technologies manufacturing firms are forced to rethink almost every aspect of their value creation process. To utilize this promising digital technology and to cope with the new market conditions of IoT environments, research shows that industrial firms have to make a fundamental shift in value creation logic and break free from the value chain perspective of business. Instead they have to embrace a view where value is co-created within ecosystems in both a vertical and a horizontal manner. By exploring the value creation logic of small and medium sized (SME) Swedish industrial machinery manufacturers, this study contributes to a deeper understanding of how manufacturing firms view their value creation processes and how aligned this logic is to the latest research in IoT. The study found that Swedish industrial machine manufacturers do understand the transformative force of IoT-Technologies and see great business opportunities to utilize IoT in their business. The study, however, identified a lack of co-creation and difficulties in embracing an ecosystem perspective. While quick to embrace change on a technical level, respondents still adhere to a firm-centric and linear perspective of value creation, with a strong attachment to the value chain concept. The study suggests that it is not a lack of technical proficiency or engineering know-how, but rather an adherence to goods-dominant logic and attachment to the value chain concept that prevent Swedish SME manufacturers from fully embracing the growing market of industrial IoT. Hence, we see an urgent need for both practitioners and academia to shift their attention from the dazzling potential of cutting-edge technologies to the nitty-gritty business of incorporating co-creation and ecosystem-Thinking into current business practices. © 2020 The authors.

  • New printing technology and pricing
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Industrial Marketing Management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0019-8501 .- 1873-2062. ; 38:3, s. 253-262
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This case study analyzes five Swedish printing houses' pricing with respect to their investments in new printing technology. The new printing technology made it possible for the printing houses to market new products and services to meet the demand for shorter delivery times and full service solutions. Although this demand was apparent, the printing houses' opportunities to capitalize on their investments depended on the characteristics of the market segment that they served. Findings indicate that the new printing technology made it possible to change prices when the new services reduced delivery time and costs, and when there were substantial differences between the new services and available substitutes. Thus, customers accepted new pricing when the utilization of the new technology resulted in financial gains and time reductions.

  • Exploring a New Application of Construct Specification Equations (CSEs) and Entropy : A Pilot Study with Balance Measurements
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Entropy. - : MDPI. - 1099-4300. ; 25:6
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Both construct specification equations (CSEs) and entropy can be used to provide a specific, causal, and rigorously mathematical conceptualization of item attributes in order to provide fit-for-purpose measurements of person abilities. This has been previously demonstrated for memory measurements. It can also be reasonably expected to be applicable to other kinds of measures of human abilities and task difficulty in health care, but further exploration is needed about how to incorporate qualitative explanatory variables in the CSE formulation. In this paper we report two case studies exploring the possibilities of advancing CSE and entropy to include human functional balance measurements. In case study I, physiotherapists have formulated a CSE for balance task difficulty by principal component regression of empirical balance task difficulty values from Berg’s Balance Scale transformed using the Rasch model. In case study II, four balance tasks of increasing difficulty due to diminishing bases of support and vision were briefly investigated in relation to entropy as a measure of the amount of information and order as well as physical thermodynamics. The pilot study has explored both methodological and conceptual possibilities and concerns to be considered in further work. The results should not be considered as fully comprehensive or absolute, but rather open up for further discussion and investigations to advance measurements of person balance ability in clinical practice, research, and trials. © 2023 by the authors.

  • Materializing Digital Inequalities : the Digital Artifacts of the Marginalized in Brazil
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: PROCEEDINGS OF THE SIXTH INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE ON INFORMATION AND COMMUNICATIONS TECHNOLOGIES AND DEVELOPMENT, VOL 2. - New York : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450319072 ; , s. 108-111
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As a predominantly social phenomenon, many examinations around issues caused by digital inequalities appropriately focus on the policies, attitudes, and other cultural elements that pertain to the adoption, use, and proliferation of digital technology. As a compliment to these analyses, this paper will examine the materiality as a component of the digital inequalities in Brazil's urban poor areas, known as favelas. We specifically look at the material aspects of the digital artifacts used in LAN Houses and state-supported Telecenters located inside the favelas in the city of Vitoria, Brazil. This study is driven by qualitative exploration using critical ethnographic methods such as observation and interviews - designed to focus on the perspective of the local users of LAN Houses and Telecenters. We apply critical ethnography to give voices to the locals and allow them to understand the material issues and conflicts on their terms. Through examples from keyboard layout to power unit supplies, we will describe how the materiality of digital artifacts contributes to digital inequalities and how unique social conventions are formed in this context. Shedding light on people's experiences with such materials broadens our view of different ways that technology and internet is used, and perhaps thereby do a better job of developing appropriate technologies for these people.

  • Reflections on Designing for Aesthetic Engagement
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2nd Biennial Research Through Design Conference.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recently, there has been a clear shift in the Interaction Design community towards the design for engagement as opposed to more traditional ideals of efficiency and functionality. Our work explores how to design for aesthetic engagement in interaction; building on an approach founded on phenomenology, embodiment, pragmatist aesthetics and embodied cognition. In this paper, we present four different research through design projects we have undertaken, in which we leveraged this approach. These designs cover a wide range of contexts, scales and use. Together, they describe and open up a design space: each of the projects provides rich, aesthetic experiences that respect complexity and ambiguity. They entice people to engage with body and mind, where meaning arises in dialogue with the artifact. We present and critically reflect on these projects in the form of an annotated portfolio. Comparing and contrasting the project results reveals insights into our overall approach and research interest regarding how to design for engagement. We conclude with opportunities that these reflections offer for the design of engaging interactions. Furthermore, we expand on the implications that these reflections suggest towards further trajectories of practice-based research into such experiences.

  • Lessons from the Regulation of E-scooters through the MDS Standard: Policy Lessons for Connected Vehicles
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 56th Hawaii International Conference on System Sciences. - : IEEE. - 9780998133164
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Connected vehicles generate new data streams that present promising opportunities for policymakers to monitor and learn from events and behavior. To explore what we can learn from how public entities leverage ubiquitous data streams for policy development and enforcement, we draw on a case study of the standard Mobility Data Specification (MDS) and its use by cities to regulate E-scooter operators. Our findings suggest that (1) the richness of real-time data changes the speed of policy revision, (2) data access enables moving some micro-decisions to the edge, and (3) policy will be formulated as fixed or flexible with different amendment rules.

  • The trash is always greener on the other side : a life cycle assessment of IoT implementation
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: AMCIS 2023 Proceedings. - : Association for Information Systems. - 9781713893592
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The 2030 Agenda has pushed practitioners as well as academia to renew their efforts on promotingsustainability, e.g. in how digital technologies can support cities to improve their environmentalperformance. However, as scholars focus their attention on the positive outcomes of implementation, they often neglect the environmental impact of the artefact itself. We present a study of a Green ISimplementation – a municipal Internet of Things (IoT) solution which was expected to decrease thecarbon emissions produced by urban waste collection in Sweden. Using a mixed methods approach,we present qualitative findings from interviews & project meetings as well as quantitative findingsfrom a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA). We find that (1) the environmental impact of the connectedlitter-bins – however small – is not necessarily offset by any significant benefits, and (2) the mostsignificant way for the stakeholders to reduce environmental impact is to utilize more ecologicallyfriendly trash bags.
