  • Two Different Strategies to Facilitate Involvement in Healthcare Improvements : A Swedish County Council Initiative
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Global Advances in Health and Medicine. - 2164-957X. ; 3:5, s. 22-28
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: From a management point of view, there are many different approaches from which to choose to engage staff members in initiatives to improve performance. Objective: The present study evaluated how two different types of improvement strategies facilitate and encourage involvement of different professional groups in health-care organizations.Methods/Design: Empirical data of two different types of strategies were collected within an improvement project in a County Council in Sweden. The data analysis was carried out through classifying the participants' profession, position, gender, and the organizational administration of which they were a part, in relation to their participation.Setting: An improvement project in a County Council in Sweden.Participants: Designed Improvement Processes consisted of n=105 teams and Intrapreneurship Projects of n=202 projects.Intervention: Two different types of improvement strategies, Designed Improvement Processes and Intrapreneurship Projects.Main Outcome Measures: How two different types of improvement strategies facilitate and encourage involvement of different professional groups in healthcare organizations. Results: Nurses were the largest group participating in both improvement initiatives. Physicians were also well represented, although they seemed to prefer the less structured Intrapreneurship Projects approach. Assistant nurses, being the second largest staff group, were poorly represented in both initiatives. This indicates that the benefits and support for one group may push another group aside. Conclusions: Managers need to give prerequisites and incentives for staff who do not participate in improvements to do so. Comparisons of different types of improvement initiatives are an underused research strategy that yields interesting and thoughtful results.

  • Furniture in Swedish Nursing Homes : A Design Perspective on Perceived Meanings within the Physical Environment
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Journal of Interior Design. - Wiley-Blackwell. - 1071-7641. ; 39:2, s. 17-35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There are good reasons to believe that furniture designers can play an important role in the design of appropriate caring environments and thus contribute to the care that is provided. Designers are usually engaged by manufacturers that develop furniture for public procurement and a market for elderly consumers but often do not learn from those who spend their everyday lives in these environments. This paper is based on industrial design and presents a study that explores the relationships between people and furniture in nursing homes. Thematic interviews were carried out with residents and personnel, in total 21 participants. The study was carried out in three nursing homes in Stockholm. The results suggest that elderly people strive for a sense of home in their private rooms in contrast to shared rooms and that the perspectives on furniture differ between the elderly people and the personnel. The conclusion is that understanding the role of furniture at nursing homes can help to reinforce the identity of elderly residents and their needs of continuity, socialization and existential safety. The recommendations are to involve the experiences of elderly people in the design processes and to make more informed furniture investment decisions for nursing homes.

  • PhD students' presenting, staging and announcing their educational status - An analysis of shared images in social media
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Computers and education. - Elsevier Ltd. - 0360-1315. ; 116, s. 237-243
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Little research has been conducted on the question of academics' use of social media. The effects of social media on the educational environment of postgraduate students need to be further explored. The purpose of this study was to investigate the underlying values and ideas of being in postgraduate education by analysing 176 posted photos on social media. The findings show that PhD students manifest their educational status by presenting themselves as being in a process, staging academic artefacts and announcing important achievements towards the goal of earning their degree. These activities represent a global understanding of being a PhD student, that exists regardless of nation, gender or ethnicity and as such represents a “meta curricula” that exists above and beyond any locally defined PhD syllabus. It should be considered that the constant mirroring of PhD student life that has been made possible via social platforms seems to gain in importance and that the enculturation into the academic culture that exists among postgraduate students' own activities on social media needs to be taken into account when addressing postgraduate education, in practice as well as in research. © 2017 Elsevier Ltd

  • Virtual Invisible Men : Privacy and invisibility as forms of privilege in online venues for fathers during early parenthood
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Culture, Society and Masculinities. - Men's Studies Press. - 1941-5583. ; 6:1, s. 52-68
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Given the proliferation of support technology for men entering parenthood in virtual forums this project’s aim was to explore a virtual forum exclusively for fathers and elaborate on gendered questions for men’s parenthood within that milieu. An archival forum study was undertaken using principles for nethnography. The categories presented in the results overall indicate that the online venue creates a privileged invisibility from experiences in “real life” gender relations. This suggests that both horizontal and vertical homo-social dimensions are present in the forum support/negotiations which occur among the forum posters, whereby issues of invisibility and entitlement in some cases take a central position. We suggest that being virtual invisible men entails participation in both a marketplace of opinions and a homo-social competition.
  • Genusperspektiv på vård och omvårdnad
  • 2017

  • Sickness absence following breast cancer surgery : a two-year follow-up cohort study
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Caring Sciences. - 0283-9318. ; 32:2, s. 715-724
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Rationale and aimMost women of working ages with limited breast cancer (BC) have returned to work within the first year after diagnosis. However, little is known about what is happening during this year regarding sickness absence and return to work. Also, the knowledge is very limited about the occurrence of part‐time sickness absence after BC diagnosis. Therefore, the aim of this study was to describe occurrence, extent and length of SA during a two‐year follow‐up after BC surgery and to analyse the association between being SA and type of cancer treatment.MethodsIn this prospective cohort study, 497 women responded to questionnaires about different aspects of sickness absence at six occasions during two years after primary BC surgery (at baseline and after 4, 8, 12, 18 and 24 months). Treatment information was obtained from the National breast cancer register. Multinomial logistic regression was used to calculate odds ratios (OR) for likelihood of being sickness absent more than once.ResultsTwo‐thirds of the women were sickness absent at baseline; this proportion decreased, especially during the first eight months. At 24 months, 13% were sickness absent. Of all women, 27% never reported sickness absence and 14% were sickness absent at most of the six survey times. At eight months, many had shifted from full‐ to part‐time sickness absence. Women with chemotherapy and/or advanced BC surgery had higher ORs for being sickness absent at most of the follow‐ups.ConclusionsMost women returned to work within the first eight months after BC surgery and of those sickness absent after that, most had been part‐time sickness absent. Thus, it is important to differentiate between part‐ and full‐time sickness absence in future studies. Special attention should be paid to the impact of chemotherapy and type of surgery on the likelihood of being sickness absent.
