  • Ethical Pro-Environmental Self-Identity Practice : The Case of Second-Hand Products
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI AG. - 2071-1050. ; 14:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • As part of sustainable development, more attention is being placed on consumer behavior. Revised economic models have resulted in an understanding of the need for a circular economy. In this perspective, the consumer is not merely the buyer of the product but also a seller in consumer-to-consumer (C2C) activities, here referred to as re-commerce. In this qualitative study, researchers conducted in-depth interviews of 32 respondents from two countries who had second-hand product trading experience on Facebook. The study uses thematic content analysis to analyze the themes of ethical pro-environmental self-identity (PESI) practices in the respondents' everyday lives. In this study, challenges relating to understanding conditions for fruitful re-commerce are framed in a social practice theory. Focus is placed on ethical pro-environmental self-identity in the context of selling or buying products in Bangladesh and Sweden. The contributions of this study relate to consumer perspectives on what enables re-commerce for six selected product categories. The study also points to the importance of social media and context-bound differences between product groups as well as individuals in two national contexts.

  • Citizen Science as Democratic Innovation That Renews Environmental Monitoring and Assessment for the Sustainable Development Goals in Rural Areas
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 13:5
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This commentary focuses on analyzing the potential of citizen science to address legitimacy issues in the knowledge base used to guide transformative governance in the context of the United Nation’s Sustainable Development Goals (henceforth SDGs). The commentary develops two interrelated arguments for better understanding the limits of what we term “traditional” Environmental Monitoring and Assessment (EMA) as well as the potential of citizen science (CS) for strengthening the legitimacy of EMA in the local implementation of SDGs. We start by arguing that there is an urgent need for a profound renewal of traditional EMA to better implement the SDGs. Then, we present CS as a democratic innovation that provides a path to EMA renewal that incorporates, develops, and extends the role of CS in data production and use by EMA. The commentary substantiates such arguments based on current approaches to CS and traditional EMA. From this starting point, we theorize the potential of CS as a democratic innovation that can repurpose EMA as a tool for the implementation of the SDGs. With a focus on the implementation of SDG15 (Life on Land) in local contexts, the commentary presents CS as a democratic innovation for legitimate transformative governance that can affect socio-ecological transitions. We see this approach as especially appropriate to analyze the implementation of SDGs in rural settings where a specific resource nexus can create conflict-laden contexts with much potential for a renewed EMA to support transformative governance towards Agenda 2030.

  • Re-Commerce to Ensure Circular Economy from Consumer Perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sustainability. - : MDPI. - 2071-1050. ; 13:18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Responsible consumption practice is crucial to minimizing waste as part of sustainable development (SDG 12). This can be achieved by extending product life in a cradle-to-cradle system as part of a circular economy. However, are consumers willing to extend product life by reusing materials? The phenomenon of re-commerce, where consumers sell products to each other (C2C), takes place in physical as well as web-based markets. This project focuses on enabling factors for re-commerce practices on Facebook among consumers in Bangladesh. A review of existing literature provided grounds for an empirical focus group study of Bangladeshi consumers. Using a social practice theory perspective in a thematic analysis shows that enabling factors in terms of technical competence, context-bound conditions influencing meanings such as socially accepted procedures, and practical practices relating to materials such as payment forms and logistics support, all serve as enabling or hindering factors. The study contributes to the understanding of conditions for re-commerce practices as part of a circular economy system where consumers are encouraged to engage in responsible consumption by extending product life cycles.

  • Case study 1: Fighting poverty as a challenge for business and management education: Developing business models for alleviating poverty: A case study of Stora Enso in Lao PDR
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Socially Responsive Organizations & the Challenge of Poverty. - : Routledge. - 9781783530595 ; , s. 91-102
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The notion of a ‘triple bottom line’ continues to grow in importance (Cronin et al. 2010). The concept refers to the fact that modern business models are expected to address not only economic, but also social and environmental objectives (Elkington 1998). Corporations are encouraged to build their businesses in a way that creates value, not only for the corporation itself, but also for society (Porter and Kramer 2011). As a part of this process, corporate social responsibility (CSR) has become a multifaceted concept that embraces accountability. It is a new business imperative that enables opportunities for business and innovation, but which is also associated with great challenges, as it implies that businesses need to question and rethink their business models on a conceptual as well as operational level. The challenge is particularly noticeable in large corporations and multinational companies that, due to their complex and extensive character, face challenges in adapting to new expectations by rebuilding business models (Rainey 2010; Prahalad and Hart 2002).

  • Consumer attitudes towards sustainability in the garment industry – A consumer study in Hong Kong
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Approaches in Textiles and Fashion. - Singapore : Springer Nature Singapore. - 9789811908736 ; , s. 13-40
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainable development in the textile industry is intimately connected to consumer behavior. This chapter concerns consumers behavior in Hong Kong, focusing on the purchasing of garments. Social practice theory offered an understanding of consumer behavior that goes beyond attitudes in the studied focus groups. The results indicate that the complexity in the textile industry contributes to difficulties to capture sustainability aspects in purchasing a garment for the consumer. Therefore, efforts need to be made to educate consumers, which will enable them to be part of continued sustainability transformations of the textile industry.

  • Consumer Perspectives of Rental of Outdoor Clothing
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Novel Sustainable Alternative Approaches for the Textiles and Fashion Industry. - 9783031370601 ; , s. 41-74
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sustainability impact from the clothing industry, in every step of the life cycle is a global problem. This chapter investigates the customer perspective on renting clothes, more specifcally clothes for outdoor activities. It assumes a need for a transition to take place where effcient use of resources is given priority. This transition in production and consumption is, in this case, studied in a case study of rental. Rental is associated with a number of challenges for the rental agent as well as the customer. The aim of the research project was to develop a better understanding of customer perspectives on renting outdoor clothing. A case study, Haglöfs in Stockholm, served as an empirical context. The conceptual framework, social practice theory offers three dimensions to explain consumer behavior: material, meaning and competence. Implications of this study may pave the way for developing a more customer focused rental business model in the industry.

  • Ethical Consumption: A Review and Research Agenda
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Consumer Studies. - 1470-6423. ; 48
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ethical consumption is a domain of consumer research that focuses on individuals' ethical concerns when making consumption decisions. Owing to its enormous potential as a research domain, ethical consumption has gained increasing importance, especially in view of the impact of consumption choices on the environment and society as a whole. This study consolidates the existing body of information on ethical consumption through a systematic literature review (SLR) employing the SPAR-4-SLR methodology in conjunction with the ADO-TCM framework. An extensive search was conducted using the Scopus and Web of Science databases, carefully selecting 125 publications related to ethical consumption from 2002 to 2023. Next, a comprehensive descriptive analysis was conducted to identify the most substantial gaps in the literature and propose concrete directions for future research. Scholars across academic fields can utilize these findings and guidelines to inform their research, while practitioners can implement ethical consumption behavioral philosophies in their sustainable business practices.

  • Corporate motives for multi-stakeholder collaboration- corporate social responsibility in the electronics supply chains
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Cleaner Production. - : Elsevier BV. - 0959-6526 .- 1879-1786. ; 131, s. 639-648
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The issue of "conflict minerals" has received global attention and various attempts have been made to resolve this issue. This qualitative study explored the multi-stakeholder collaboration approach for addressing complex corporate social responsibility issues in global supply chains, using the case of the electronics industry. Perceived corporate motives and challenges to engaging in multi-stakeholder collaboration and dialogue were explored based on empirical data obtained through in-depth, semi structured interviews with management representatives for three case companies. The main motives expressed for participating in multi-stakeholder collaboration by representatives of the case companies were primarily linked to the complex nature of the conflict minerals problem and the fact that a diverse set of stakeholders is needed to achieve solutions. However, this diversity of stakeholders and perspectives also poses challenges for the case companies. Overall, the findings emphasise the importance of a collective approach when addressing complex social responsibility issues that reach beyond traditional company boundaries. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd.
