  • Community based forest groups in Eastern and Southern Africa - a study of prospects for capacity improvement
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Forestry Review. - : Commonwealth Forestry Association. - 1465-5489 .- 2053-7778. ; 15, s. 471-488
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Community-based forest groups (CBFGs) were developed in eastern and southern Africa based on the assumption that natural resources are best managed by the communities who depend on them. However, many CBFGs have not met expectations due to internal weaknesses and external obstacles. This study describes the current status of CBFGs in Ethiopia, Kenya, Uganda, Tanzania and Zambia; identifies drivers and barriers for developing CBFGs; and generates insights about how barriers are best addressed. The report combines case studies of 11 CBFGs and a verification workshop. Several factors suggest that the development of CBFGs in the region has been positive, including a high membership; strong commitment; basic operational skills; the growth of local, regional and international markets; and infrastructure improvements. Impediments to CBFG success include inappropriate registration of the organisations, insecure access rights, weak leadership and organisational capacities, limited resources, weak market access and limited entrepreneurial and value adding capacity. This study concludes by suggesting measures to improve the future development of CBFGs in the region.

  • Effects of charcoal ban on value chains and livelihoods in Kenyan Coast – stakeholders’ perceptions
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Environmental Development. - : Elsevier BV. - 2211-4645. ; 45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Charcoal production in Africa has been seen by experts and authorities as a driver of forest degradation and deforestation; hence, governments are implementing measures to address this problem, including banning of charcoal production and trade. The effectiveness of these policies is uncertain, and stakeholders’ reactions to, and perceptions of, the regulations are unknown. This study analyzed impacts, perceptions, and feedback reactions among stakeholders after the charcoal ban was introduced in Kenya in February 2018. The conceptual framework refers to the theories on sustainability transitions, and data was collected through key informant interviews, focus group discussions (FGDs), individual interviews, workshops, and surveys among value chain actors, organizations, and government agencies in Kwale, Taita Taveta and Mombasa counties in Kenya. Several economic, behavioral, attitudinal, and institutional consequences of the ban were identified. The policy showed characteristics of a negative feedback loop, meaning the policy may not succeed in reaching its purpose because of adverse side effects. Possible “policy mix” approaches and advancement of alternative charcoal sources such as briquettes could in the long-term, promote sustainable development of the Kenyan charcoal sector hence supporting the policy implementation.

  • Dweller Preferences for Wood as a Load-Bearing Material in Residential Buildings
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Forest Economics. - : Now Publishers. - 1104-6899 .- 1618-1530. ; 38, s. 77-111
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The wider use of wood as a load-bearing framing material can advance climate action by storing carbon in long-lived products. Substitution of traditional materials such as brick, concrete, and steel will be partly determined by dweller preferences. Unknown preferences allowed, we elicited stated choices for the following load-bearing materials in residential construction: (i) primarily wood and (ii) wood in combination with other materials, over the use of (iii) traditional (e.g., brick, concrete, steel). Stated choices with an opt-out option gathered from over 7,000 adults residing across seven European nations were modelled using a weighted multinomial logistic regression. Among our explanatory variables, past experience and knowledge dominated higher preferences toward wood over traditional materials. Negative attitudes related to wood harvesting had a strong inverse effect. Preferences show that primarily wood and wood in combination with other materials were perceived as two distinct load-bearing products. A concerted effort to better inform the public on the green credentials and performance features of wood might be necessary to increase its use in European residential load-bearing framing.

  • The role of personal values and personality traits in environmental concern of non-industrial private forest owners in Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Forest Policy and Economics. - : Elsevier BV. - 1389-9341 .- 1872-7050. ; 141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Environmental benefits have become priority objectives for the management of forests, including for private forest owners in many countries. Understanding and promoting environmental-friendly private forest management requires a measure of environmental concern of forest owners and knowledge of factors that influence it. Such a measure allows to explore underlying motivations of forest owners to include environmental aspects in their forest management. This in turn helps in developing and implementing effective pro-environmental forestry policies. In this paper, we assess environmental concern in forest management of 226 non-industrial private forest (NIPF) owners in Sweden. In particular, we sought to achieve a two-fold objective: a) to quantitatively explore the content and dimensionality of the environmental concern construct of forestry owners and b) to identify the association between environmental concern of forest owners and their personal values and personality traits. A principal factor analysis resulted in a two-dimensional environmental concern construct encompassing: environmental strategy and environmental orientation. Hierarchical seemingly unrelated regressions (SUREG) showed that personal values and personality traits help to explain environmental concern in forest management of NIPF owners. A better understanding of environmental concern of forest owners and its relation with individuals' attributes will help in better designing, framing and targeting of tailor-made interventions to promote environmental considerations in forest management.

  • Shades of green: a social scientific view on bioeconomy in the forest sector
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0282-7581 .- 1651-1891. ; 29, s. 402-410
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Politics increasingly introduces initiatives supporting a shift toward a bioeconomy aiming at a society relying strongly on renewable biological sources while achieving economic growth efficiently and sustainably. However, the agenda of bioeconomy comprises different "shades of green," in the sense that different actors stress different aspects of the concept, when embracing it in communication. This conceptual paper aims to present policy and socioeconomic theoretical frameworks and research areas relevant for a more holistic understanding of the bioeconomy concept applied to the forest sector, and identify a core set of potential contributions from social sciences for enhancing the bioeconomy in the forest sector. The paper focuses on studies within policy analysis, economics, and business administration disciplines. Thus it presents diverse disciplinary perspectives on the forest sector in a bioeconomy. Furthermore, innovation and sustainability have been identified as issues relevant to be approached across these disciplines.

  • Performance indicators in the wood products industry – a review and study of a saw mill supply chain
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Forest Economics. - 0355-032X. ; 45, s. 127-136
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sawmills are experiencing a turbulent environment in which customers’ expectations and global competition set the landscape for the sawmill industry. Increasing competition and complexity, as well as the general technological development in the business environment, have enhanced the importance of quality with regards to both products and services. Hence it is important for sawmills to be able to offer a high quality of its products and services to its customers. The purpose of this paper is to identify the currently existing quality assurance practices in the Swedish sawmill industry. This study is conducted as an interview study, in which five sawmill representatives were interviewed with regards to, for instance, their quality assurance process and quality measurements. The study concludes that the individual sawmills work to either an ISO-9000 or strength grading certificate and hence they adhere to certified procedures and routines. This research, however, does not register actions taken in every-day business, and hence additional studies would need to be conducted with an in-depth case study approach in order to identify the actual behavior at each sawmill. The studies identify factors limiting sawmills in their work to meet customers’ requirements; however, customers asking for additional requirements are often denied delivery of products. This study aims at laying a foundation regarding sawmills’ quality assurance practices and thus covers an unexplored area within sawmill research.

  • Supply chain management in the Swedish wood products industry – a need analysis.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0282-7581 .- 1651-1891. ; 31:8, s. 777-787
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper examines the potential of supply chain management (SCM) to address challenges associated with Swedish wood-based supply chains (SCs). Information drawn from a review of literature concerning SCM in the wood products industry is compared and contrasted with data obtained from a case study of an integrated sawmill SC in Northern Sweden, focusing on interviewed participants’ perceived needs and benefits of integrating supply chain operations. Key components of SCM for the wood products industry are suggested for categorizing the literature and results from the case study. Previous SCM studies have largely focused on solving planning problems by operational analysis, and/or SC strategies, while several important aspects including risk management, integrated performance indicators, power relations, leadership and culture have received relatively little attention. The interviews highlight needs to enhance SC actors’ coordination and communication, as well as for more systematic study of the potential for enhancing efficiency and profit margins in SCs of Swedish wood products.
