- Various societal functions, such as healthcare, freight transports, water supplies and electricity, ensure the daily life, endurance and progress of modern societies. The protection of such critical functions requires comprehensive information processing. Based on evidence from documents on the Swedish planning process STYREL and interviews with entrusted decisionmakers at county administrative boards, municipalities and power grid operators, this study aims to crystallise information pathways and flaws to highlight information filtration and alteration. Analyses of the material reveal a set of information-flawing filters, such as information withholding or loss when sharing, information scarcity in criticality assessments and ad-hoc information creation due to scarcity. Because of these filters, the Swedish process causes an altering of information that affects the quality of decisions and the emergency response plan that relies on them. Thus, this study indicates deficiencies that relate to information sharing, information security and decision-making that pose risks to citizens and businesses.

Increased Gun Violence Among Young Males in Sweden : a Descriptive National Survey and International Comparison

- This population-based time-trend study examines gun violence rates among males in Sweden during the years 1996 to 2015 and compares the rate in Sweden to other Western European countries. Data were collected from six registries and are presented descriptively per 100,000 inhabitants. The risks among males in Sweden increased considerably in both lethal and non-lethal gun victimization and perpetration. Among males aged 15 to 29 there was a five-fold increase in risk for victimization in lethal and non-lethal gun violence during the 20-year observation period. In a comparative perspective the rate of gun homicide victimization among males 15 to 29 years was higher in Sweden compared to other Western European countries, while the risk for males over age 30 was at an average level. Based on the results of this study we conclude that gun violence among young males in Sweden has been on the rise and is at a high level compared to other Western European countries. The development of gun violence in Sweden can be characterized as endemic, prevalent in both population and socially vulnerable areas.

- This paper presents a brief historical account of the unorthodox design of an educational program for information systems development. The design and development of this program was initiated in 1977 at the University College of Östersund, today the Mid Sweden University. The presented account provides a description of the somewhat unusual context of this initiative, which was regarded as a weakness by conventional standards, but became an opportunity in this particular situation. The intellectual inspirations and sources for the design of this program are characterized and followed by a presentation of the very content and operating mode of the educational program. The final part presents the various outcomes that the program gave rise to, in terms of students’ professional careers observed.

- The relationships between different denudation surfaces/peneplains formed across crystalline basement rocks give valuable information to the tectonic development of ancient shields. The denudation surfaces can be identified by the aid of their landforms, tilt and remnant weathering mantles in relation to cover rocks. Three types of denudation surfaces are identified across south Sweden (1) a tilted flat plain, (2) a tilted hilly surface with relative relief below 150Â m and (3) stepped horizontal plains with residual hills. All three types of denudation surfaces are peneplains, denudation surfaces graded to specific base levels. The re-exposed parts of the inclined flat sub-Cambrian peneplain (SCP) extend as a landscape feature from below cover rocks in the north and east and reaches up on the highest summits of the South Swedish Uplands. The SCP (the exact unconformity) is encountered again below Cambrian covers outside the west coast. Thus south Sweden is a geological dome, the South Swedish Dome (SSD), in relation to the Cambrian cover. The southern and western low flanks of the exposed part of the dome are instead characterized by a hilly peneplain, the inclined sub-Cretaceous denudation surface, with remnants of thick, kaolinitic, clayey saprolites. This sub-Cretaceous peneplain is cut off at a distinct level in the south and west by the almost horizontal South Småland Peneplain, a never covered, epigene, peneplain. The uplift history of the SSD aids to the understanding on the development of late Tertiary drainage systems of the Baltic Basin by the Eridano River.

Etik för dyrt för svenska kaffebolag : En uppföljningsrapport om kaffe från Brasilien

- År 2005 kunde Swedwatch visa att huvuddelen av det kaffe som dricks i Sverige kommer från områden i Brasilien där allvarliga missförhållanden råder i produktionsledet. Denna uppföljningsrapport visar att Sveriges största kafferosterier, Kraft Foods (Gevalia) och Nestlé (Zoégas), inte bidragit på något nämnvärt sätt till de förbättringar som skett i Brasilien sedan 2005. Däremot har skärpt nationell lagstiftning och förbättrad myndighetskontroll minskat andelen barn- och tvångsarbete, samt förbättrat situationen för migrantarbetare i Brasilien.Dock kvarstår fortfarande en rad allvarliga problem, i synnerhet i det småskaliga familjejordbruk som utgör 87 procent av Brasiliens kaffeodlingar. Småodlare är ofta förhindrade att ställa om till mer hållbara produktionsmetoder på grund av det låga kaffepris som betalas av Kraft Foods och Nestlé. Lönenivåerna för anställda är oskäligt låga och många kaffeplockare står fortfarande utanför socialförsäkringssystemet. Värst drabbade är kvinnliga kaffearbetare. Dessutom används fortfarande stora mängder kemiska bekämpningsmedel som är förenade med allvarliga miljö- och hälsorisker.Swedwatchs uppföljning visar att varken Kraft Foods eller Nestlé har försökt spåra det konventionella kaffe som importeras till Sverige. Inköpen görs enbart via exportörer och företagen utför inte några kontroller av de odlingar där kaffet produceras. Dessutom saknar Kraft Foods en uppförandekod för leverantörsledet, och Nestlés uppförandekod är fortfarande otillräcklig.2005 satte Kraft Foods och Nestlé oerhört stor tilltro till 4C, ett etikinitiativ som syftar till att förbättra den etiska och miljömässiga standarden i den konventionella kaffeproduktionen. Uppföljningen visar emellertid att de inte har ökat sina inköp av 4C-kaffe under de senaste fem åren. Swedwatch bedömer således att företagen behöver öka sina insatser för att förbättra förhållandena i den konventionella kaffekedjan. Dessutom bör Kraft Foods och Nestlé öka sina volymer av certifierat kaffe för att stödja redan existerande initiativ som syftar till förhöjd etisk och miljömässig standard på det kaffe som dagligen dricks i Sverige.

Perceptions of Health and Wellbeing Among Employees in a Work Integration Social Enterprise in Sweden

- Background: Work Integration Social Enterprises (WISEs) constitute an important vehiclefor providing employment opportunities for disadvantaged groups.Objective: The goal of this qualitative case study is to explore perceptions of health andwellbeing among employees working in a WISE located in the Gävleborg region, in eastcentral Sweden.Methods: Data were gathered using 16 in-depth, semi-structured interviews with thesocial enterprise employees.Results: Findings were categorized into three main categories: the importance of financialindependence and societal benefits; team spirit and a sense of belonging; and improvedquality of life and wellbeing.Conclusion: The participants perceived that working in the WISE gave them a feeling offreedom and increased their self-esteem because of the possibility to earn an income.Also, they were satisfied with their job (e.g., with regard to work quality and flexibility)and believed that their work contributed to society. Moreover, through working in a WISE,the participants felt a sense of belonging and togetherness through interaction with coworkersand managers, and an improved quality of life for themselves and their families.
