  • Detection of hunting pits using airborne laser scanning and deep learning
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of field archaeology. - : Routledge. - 0093-4690 .- 2042-4582.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Forests worldwide contain unique cultural traces of past human land use. Increased pressure on forest ecosystems and intensive modern forest management methods threaten these ancient monuments and cultural remains. In northern Europe, older forests often contain very old traces, such as millennia-old hunting pits and indigenous Sami hearths. Investigations have repeatedly found that forest owners often fail to protect these cultural remains and that many are damaged by forestry operations. Current maps of hunting pits are incomplete, and the locations of known pits have poor spatial accuracy. This study investigated whether hunting pits can be automatically mapped using national airborne laser data and deep learning. The best model correctly mapped 70% of all the hunting pits in the test data with an F1 score of 0.76. This model can be implemented across northern Scandinavia and could have an immediate effect on the protection of cultural remains.

  • School-aged children's experiences of postoperative music medicine on pain, distress, and anxiety.
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Paediatric anaesthesia. - : Wiley. - 1460-9592 .- 1155-5645. ; 19:12, s. 1184-90
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AIM: To test whether postoperative music listening reduces morphine consumption and influence pain, distress, and anxiety after day surgery and to describe the experience of postoperative music listening in school-aged children who had undergone day surgery. BACKGROUND: Music medicine has been proposed to reduce distress, anxiety, and pain. There has been no other study that evaluates effects of music medicine (MusiCure) in children after minor surgery. METHODS: Numbers of participants who required analgesics, individual doses, objective pain scores (Face, Legs, Activity, Cry, Consolability [FLACC]), vital signs, and administration of anti-emetics were documented during postoperative recovery stay. Self-reported pain (Coloured Analogue Scale [CAS]), distress (Facial Affective Scale [FAS]), and anxiety (short State-Trait Anxiety Inventory [STAI]) were recorded before and after surgery. In conjunction with the completed intervention semi-structured qualitative interviews were conducted. RESULTS: Data were recorded from 80 children aged 7-16. Forty participants were randomized to music medicine and another 40 participants to a control group. We found evidence that children in the music group received less morphine in the postoperative care unit, 1/40 compared to 9/40 in the control group. Children's individual FAS scores were reduced but no other significant differences between the two groups concerning FAS, CAS, FLACC, short STAI, and vital signs were shown. Children experienced the music as 'calming and relaxing.' CONCLUSIONS: Music medicine reduced the requirement of morphine and decreased the distress after minor surgery but did not else influence the postoperative care.

  • Swedish police students' perspective on the Swedish Police Authority's use of digital media and its role in creating the sense of safety for the public
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Police Education: New Competencies Necessary for Modern Police Officer.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Digital media, especially social media, enable the police to get closer to the citizen to maintain or create safety. Today, the Swedish Police Authority has 264 verified digital media accounts on social media like Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, YouTube, as well as 4 podcasts. However, in the Swedish basic training program for police officers (offered at five universities) there is little or no training in how the police should use and communicate on digital media. The purpose of the study was to analyze how Swedish police students talk about and reflect on the Swedish Police Authority's use of digital media and how it can be used to Create the Sense of Safety in society. Creating the Sense of Safety is our translation of [Trygghetsskapande], which is a Swedish governmental term that e.g., the Swedish Police Authority use as a “tool” in their work. This qualitative study builds on eight digital extensive semi-structured interviews with police students from Umeå University and Södertörn University. The preliminary research findings in this study show; 1) the reason why the Swedish Police Authority needs to use social media and police students’ choice of social media platforms; 2) how police students reflect on social media and in what ways it can be beneficial in their work-life; 3) if and how the popular Swedish police tv series “Tunna blå linjen” has affected their view of their police training and their future role as a police officer; 4) the police students’ view on what kind of social media content that communicates a sense of safety for the public. Together these results provide important insights into police students’ perspective on Creating the Sense of Safety, digital media, and how they are interconnected. More in-depth results will be presented at the conference.

  • The transportability of multisystemic therapy to Sweden: Short-term results from a randomized trial of conduct-disordered youths
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Family Psychology. - : American Psychological Association (APA). - 0893-3200 .- 1939-1293. ; 22:4, s. 550-560
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This randomized clinical trial assessed the effectiveness of multisystemic therapy (MST) for 156 youths who met the diagnostic criteria for conduct disorder. Sweden's 3 largest cities and I small town served as the recruiting area for the study. A mixed factorial design was used, with random allocation between MST and treatment as usual groups. Assessments were conducted at intake and 7 months after referral. With an intention-to-treat approach, results from multiagent and multimethod assessment batteries showed a general decrease in psychiatric problems and antisocial behaviors among participants across treatments. There were.no significant differences in treatment effects between the 2 groups. The lack of treatment effect did not appear to be caused by site differences or variations in program maturity. MST treatment fidelity was lower than that of other studies, although not clearly related to treatment outcomes in this study. The results are discussed in terms of differences between Sweden and the United States. One difference is the way in which young offenders are processed (a child welfare approach vs. a juvenile justice system approach). Sociodemographic differences (e.g., rates of poverty, crime, and substance abuse) between the 2 countries may also have moderating effects on the rates of rehabilitation among young offenders.

  • Managing and working in Project Society : Institutional Challenges of Temporary Organizations
  • 2015. - 1
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this book, leading authorities on project organizing explore the growing deployment of projects and other types of temporary organizations, with a focus on the challenges created by projectification. The way projects are coordinated and handled influences the success of innovation and change within organizations and is critical for strategic development in our societies, yet it is often at odds with the institutions of traditional industrial society. Drawing on both theoretical perspectives and real-world cases, this book sheds light on the transformation toward a project society and explores the effects, opportunities, and conflicts it has created. As change continues, the authors make a case for renewing institutions and mind-sets and provide a foundation from which to discuss societal changes for the future. This is an invaluable book for researchers and students in project management and organizational theory programs, as well as professionals involved in the management of projects.

  • All about my mother : Factors influencing women’s entrepreneurship
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Academy of Management Proceedings. - : Academy of Management.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using data on all businesses started by mothers of young children in Sweden between 2000 and 2014, we investigate what factors are the most important drivers of entrepreneurship among mothers. We find that being unemployed or being an immigrant are important drivers of entrepreneurship among mothers. However, our findings show that the most important and primary determinant of entrepreneurship by mothers in Sweden is the amount of paternity leave taken by their partners. These findings suggest that in institutional contexts such as Sweden gender inequality is not a persistent feature of most households and that women can make career choices by negotiating with their partners who will make use of the parental benefits offered by the government.

  • Industrial needs for open innovation education
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Innovation education reloaded: nurturing skills for the future. - Lappeenranta : Lappeenranta University of Technology. - 9789523350328 - 9789523350335 ; , s. 44-62
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The first step in the OI-Net project was to collect information on the industrial needs for open innovation education. For this purpose, the first European Survey on Identification of Industrial Needs for Open Innovation Education was developed and launched. The OI-Net project partners collected over 500 responses from European companies (large, SMEs, and micro firms). This study responds to the challenge of creating a European-wide open innovation policy (Chesbrough, Vanhaverbeke, Lopez-Vega & Bakici, 2011) that attracts qualified and experienced researchers to boost R&D, entrepreneurship and links between industry and society in Europe. This chapter provides a summary of the key findings derived from the survey, including such indicators as the variety and intensity of open innovation practices adopted by companies, their experience and future ambitions in open innovation adoption, and the key organizational competences defining the open innovation capability of a firm. In addition to analyzing organizational capabilities and open innovation adoption practices on the company level, employees’ individual skills associated with open innovation implementation were studied. This resulted in one of the core findings of the project - the Open Innovation Specialist Competences Profile consisting of the most important skills and abilities that specialists in open innovation should possess. These findings bring new knowledge to companies’ HR and innovation management; to their hiring policy, to employees’ training and education practices, and at the same time, provide Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) with a competence framework, based on which open innovation education can be planned. Thus, the impact of this chapter includes: 1) enhancing academic research, 2) providing new instruments for academic teaching, and 3) guiding companies in the relevant skills for open and collaborative innovation.
