  • After giving birth to a baby, breastfeeding becomes your responsibility : Infant feeding perceptions and practices among women in Yaoundé, Bamenda and Bandja, Cameroon, Africa
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: International Research Journal of Public and Environmental Health. - : Journal Issues Limited. - 2360-8803 .- 2360-8803. ; 5:3, s. 38-45
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The Ministry of Public Health of Cameroon advises mothers to follow the World Health Organization’s recommendation of exclusive breastfeeding during the first six months of life and to continue breastfeeding along with appropriate complementary foods up to two years or beyond. Despite these recommendations, malnutrition due to inadequate feeding practices is still prevalent in Cameroon. Therefore, this study aims to explore infant feeding perceptions and identify factors influencing infant feeding practices in Cameroon. Forty-nine women aged 19 to 38 who had infants aged 6 days to 15 months were purposively selected from hospitals during the vaccination days and interviewed until saturation. The research tools included six qualitative group interviews, with each group comprising 6 to 10 women. The study was conducted in the rural area of Bandja and the urban areas of Yaoundé and Bamenda. Data were analysed using content analysis. In the study, breastfeeding was agreed upon as the best way to feed infants and was commonly practised for 1 to 2 years. Nevertheless, few infants were breastfed exclusively. Complementary foods were often nutritionally inadequate; many children were not given fruit, vegetables or foods of animal origin on a daily basis. Cultural beliefs, tradition, community norms and low educational and economic levels negatively influenced the implementation of appropriate infant feeding recommendations. The short duration of exclusive breastfeeding and the poor food diversity are the main problems. In response, it is necessary to strengthen the position of women, increase the period of maternal leave, introduce sustainable and practical education for both parents about breastfeeding, and provide good, local complementary foods.

  • Food safety knowledge, sources thereof and self-reported behaviour among university students in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Food Control. - : Elsevier. - 0956-7135 .- 1873-7129. ; 113
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • International studies have noted shortcomings in food safety knowledge and behaviour among university students. In general students do not constitute a pronounced risk group but there are wider implications. In a foreseeable future some of them will become pregnant and a majority will be responsible for vulnerable groups in their near environment. A crucial question exists, therefore, about their food safety knowledge and safe food handling practices. The aim of this study is to investigate food safety knowledge, sources thereof and self-reported food safety behavior among university students in Sweden.A quantitative study design using a web-based questionnaire was chosen as the data collection method. The questionnaire was distributed through social media and e-mail.Among the 606 respondents from 24 Swedish universities 80% were 18-30 years and 78% were women. The average number of correct answers on the knowledge questions was 7.61 out of 12 (63.4%). The foremost source of food safety knowledge was "Family and friends" (45%). Just 21.1% reported Food safety education as a source, although 35.6% had experience of a course in food hygiene/safety and/or microbiology. Respondents who reported "Family and friends" to be the foremost food safety source of knowledge also got a significantly lower rate of correct answers. Students who estimated their food safety knowledge to be good also had more correct answers. Experience of food safety education at secondary school/university/working place/polytechnic school significantly correlated with more correct answers on the knowledge questions and indicated a safer self-reported behaviour. Those with fewer correct answers also reported more unfavourable behaviours. The present study indicates that education promotes more optimal behaviors. The authors would suggest a more systematic food safety education at younger ages.

  • Translating the EBP-model into social work practice
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: NORDIC CONFERENCE ONIMPLEMENTATION OFEVIDENCE-BASED PRACTICE. ; , s. 73-
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The model of Evidence-Based Practice (EBP) is originally designed as a tool for clinical problem solving and work related learning. According to its theory of use EBP will bring an ethically sound and effective practice. Although simple in its construction implementation of the model seems as a highly complex and tricky activity in the field of social work as well as in the field of healthcare and others. The paper addresses how actors on different analytical levels respond to, translate, and spread the EBP-model. This is argued to be an effective cause to the overall implementation effect, which includes differentiation and sidesteps from the basic model. Also contextual factors hinder or facilitate realization of the model in practice, either if it will be the original model or translations of it. In sum this analytical framework of how adoption of a new practice model can be understood and explained also gives rise to the provoking question whether adherence with the original EBP-model is desirable and realistic in the context of social work. If so, a necessary follow-up question would be how fidelity with the original EBP-model can be secured. The paper explores different approaches in program theoretical terms. Empirical examples from debate and implementation efforts are given.

  • Energy performance and housing prices
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Sustainable Development. - : Wiley-Blackwell. - 0968-0802 .- 1099-1719. ; 22:6, s. 404-419
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigate whether mandatory energy performance certificates of existing residential properties contribute to property price premiums after the implementation of the EU directive on the energy performance of buildings in the Swedish private housing market. Analysing mandatory energy performance certificates of the 2009–2010 private housing transactions, we find that energy performance is associated with transaction price in situations when it is conditional on a reference benchmark. We also document property price premiums for energy performance within housing segments built before 1960 and those with a lower transaction price per square metre. Our results suggest that the property market values energy performance, and we make recommendations on which housing segments need policy support to encourage energy improvements.

  • Cultural policy as a governmental proxy tool for improved health : The Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare’s collaborations with cultural workers 1970–1975
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: The International Journal of Cultural Policy. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1028-6632 .- 1477-2833. ; 27:5, s. 667-682
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article highlights cultural policy as a governmental proxy to address political matters beyond the cultural domain – here civil health – and the need to problematize and historicize ‘arts in health’ policies. The article centres on the Swedish National Board of Health and Welfare’s collaborations with cultural workers 1970–1975, framed by three contextual developments: politicization of the cultural sector, call for innovative governmental information, and changing character of health information. Theoretically, the article draws from the field of cultural policy research, with an emphasis on historiographical perspectives. The result shows that despite interdependence, the collaborations were an arena where interests clashed. The main conflict lay in what art should seek to change for the better: society or its citizens? However, the conflicts were also due to a mixture of roles: the agency suddenly found itself a patron of the arts, and the cultural workers producers of governmental information.

  • Replacing monocultures with mixed-species stands : Ecosystem service implications of two production forest alternatives in Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Ambio. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0044-7447 .- 1654-7209. ; 45, s. 124-139
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Whereas there is evidence that mixed-species approaches to production forestry in general can provide positive outcomes relative to monocultures, it is less clear to what extent multiple benefits can be derived from specific mixed-species alternatives. To provide such insights requires evaluations of an encompassing suite of ecosystem services, biodiversity, and forest management considerations provided by specific mixtures and monocultures within a region. Here, we conduct such an assessment in Sweden by contrasting even-aged Norway spruce (Picea abies)-dominated stands, with mixed-species stands of spruce and birch (Betula pendula or B. pubescens), or spruce and Scots pine (Pinus sylvestris). By synthesizing the available evidence, we identify positive outcomes from mixtures including increased biodiversity, water quality, esthetic and recreational values, as well as reduced stand vulnerability to pest and pathogen damage. However, some uncertainties and risks were projected to increase, highlighting the importance of conducting comprehensive interdisciplinary evaluations when assessing the pros and cons of mixtures.

  • Knowledge-basing in social work? : results of an evaluation of a local Swedish project
  • 2005
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper reports on an evaluation of a local Swedish project including centres in two municipalities whose aim was to build up functional structures between social work research, education and practice. The project was part of a national program for a knowledge-based social service, i.e. an evidence-based practice. The evaluation was drawing on the critical realistic tradition with an understanding of actors as causal agents. To explain the effects of the program and of the local project an understanding of the contexts, ideas and preferences of actors was needed. In order to ”fill the gap” between the local project and the national program, program theories were examined on different levels of analysis. Document analysis and interviews helped reconstruct both formal and informal program theories, which partly showed to be conflicting. Empirical findings, through observations, interviews and writing reports, on both the implementation and on the results of the local project, were finally confronted with the different program theories. Reconstructing program theories helped understand the central ideas on the national level, on the local level and on an individual level. It also helped explain the concrete realization and results of the project. An implementation gap between the program and the project was found. The activity in the local centres was mainly carried out according to local program theories. A conclusion of the evaluation was that a translation from evidence to knowledge on a national program level made it possible for participants in the local project to reproduce a more bottom-up oriented and experience-based culture instead of transforming the existing culture of knowledge into a more evidence-based one.The paper is a contribution to the understanding of cultures of knowledge and their manifestations in social work within a Swedish context, on both a national and a local level. It is illustrated how the use of program theory could be helpful to unravel what promotes respectively counteracts cultural changes.

  • A Structural Equation Model Demonstrating the Relationship between Food Safety Background, Knowledge, Attitudes and Behaviour among Swedish Students
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Foods. - : MDPI. - 2304-8158. ; 11:11
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Traditionally, food safety knowledge has been seen as a factor in improving food safety behaviour. However, the relationship between knowledge and behavior is complex. The aim of the present study was to investigate self-reported data from 408 university students regarding food safety background, knowledge, attitudes, and behaviour using Structural Equation Model (SEM) to examine the influence of different factors on food safety behaviour. The SEM was applied to four factors derived from the data: Background, Knowledge, Attitude and Behaviour. The novelty of this current investigation is the inclusion of the Background factor (genus; experience of cooking and handling different food items; experience of a food safety education course; the foremost sources of food safety knowledge). The factors were constructed from variables with sufficient factor loadings and set up in a predetermined structure confirmed to be valid in previous studies. The results, demonstrated as regression coefficients between factors, confirm that the Background factor strongly influenced Knowledge (0.842). The Knowledge factor, in turn, strongly affected Attitude (0.605), while it did not directly affect Behaviour (0.301) in the same way as Attitude. Attitude had a stronger influence on Behaviour (0.438) than Knowledge. Thus, the Attitude factor seemed to play a mediating role between Knowledge and Behaviour. This indicates that students ' attitudes towards the importance of food safety may have an impact on their food safety behavior, which should have implications for the development of food safety education. This warrants further investigation and practical development.
