  • Exogamia matrimonial de los inmigrantes latinoamericanos con españoles : integración o estrategia migratoria
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Revista Latinoamericana de Población. - Rio de Janeiro : Asociación Latinoamericana de Población (ALAP). - 2175-8581. ; 5:8, s. 33-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • From the standpoint of assimilation theory, mixed marriages have traditionally been considered as the final stage of the integration process for the immigrants into the host society. From this perspective, we have made use of the recent National Immigrant Survey (2007) in Spain to analyze mixed marriages affecting Latin American immigrants and native Spaniards. Bivariate and multivariate approaches are used to analyze the contexts of these types of marriage, controlling for indicators such as sex, education, current citizenship, year of arrival, and the time between marriage and migration. The results reveal a fascinating and complex portrait of a type of marriage behavior that can vary significantly by country of origin.

  • Factores estructurales de la exogamia matrimonial de los inmigrantes en España y Portugal
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Revista de Demografía Histórica. - 1696-702X. ; 28:2, s. 165-194
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article studies the marriage pattern of immigrants in the south of Europe using data of vital register from 2001 to 2008.The aim of this research is to study how immigrant population integrates in Spain and Portugal analyzing intermarriage with native people. The high incidence of intermarriage is considered to be the final step of the immigrant assimilation into the host society. This is the reason for which it is used as a perfectly suitable indicator of the level of assimilation. We expect that frequency of intermarriage will be higher among immigrants from countries linked to the receiving society through a strong historical and cultural bond. Only marriage couples are been included.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The winds of xenophobia hovering over Europe have swept the moral politicalfoundations of an inclusive Swedish migration policy into the dustbin of history and twistedan enlightened left-right consensus on an open and humanitarian asylum policy into its mirroropposite. Lured by advances of the extreme right the main political parties have, since2015, come to indiscriminately embrace the view that immigration, etno-cultural diversityand an open-door refugee policy is detrimental to welfare and, in consequence, curbing migrationhas become the all dominant political strategem in vying for votes. The authorschallenge this widely accepted narrative by arguing that the sustainability of the Swedishwelfare state has not been undermined by migration but by consecutive Swedish governments'unbending adherence to austerity politics since the beginning of the 1990s. Austeritypolitics have, step by step, weakened the Swedish Model's socially integrative functions andprevented the implementation of an ambitious agenda, harvesting a potentially dynamic interplayof expansionary economic and social policies and a humanitarian asylum policy.

  • Discursos profesionales sobre la violencia del compañero íntimo: implicación en la atención de las mujeres inmigrantes en España : [Professional discourses on intimate partner violence: implication for care of immigrant women in Spain]
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Gaceta Sanitaria. - : Elsevier. - 0213-9111 .- 1578-1283. ; 30:5, s. 326-332
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objective: 1) to examine the discourses of professionals involved in the care of female victims of intimate partner violence (IPV), with emphasis on how they describe the immigrant women, the perpetrators and their own responsibility of care; and 2) to compare these discourses with the other professions involved in caring for these women (social services, associations and police and justice). Methods: Qualitative study based on semi-structured interviews with 43 professionals from social services, associations and the police and judicial systems. A discourse analysis was carried out to identify interpretive repertoires about IPV, immigrant women and their aggressors, their culture and professional practices. Results: Four interpretive repertoires emerged from professional discourses: "Cultural prototypes of women affected by IPV", "Perpetrators are similar regardless of their culture of origin", "Are victims credible and the perpetrators responsible?" and "Lack of cultural sensitivity of professionals in helping immigrant women in abusive situations". These repertoires correspond to preconceptions that professionals construct about affected women and their perpetrators, the credibility and responsibility they attribute to them and the interpretation of their professional roles. Conclusions: The employment of IPV-trained cultural mediators in the services responsible for caring for the female victims, together with cultural training for the professionals, will facilitate the provision of culturally sensitive care to immigrant female victims of intimate partner violence. • Un siglo de expansión y divergencia : Inversión en maquinaria en una economía periférica Chile 1830 – 1938
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Perfiles Económicos. - Valparaiso : Ediciones Universitarias de Valparaiso. - 0719-756X. ; 1:1, s. 43-81
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The economic development of Chile represents an interesting case of divergence and convergence with developed countries. In the late nineteenth century, its GDP per ca-pita was comparable with some countries of the European periphery and far exceeded the current developed countries of South East Asia. However, after the First World War and particularly in the years following the Great Depression, Chile began to show clear signs of exhaustion of its growth model. This article, using quantitative series of physical capital in machinery of recent works (doctoral theses, articles and book chapters) plus primary sources, the influence of physical capital formation in machi-nery is analyzed and their relationship with the divergence of Chile with the group of advanced countries. Additionally, this article presents a sectoral analysis of investment in machinery for the main productive sectors.

  • Pronunciación e identidad en el aprendizaje de lenguas extranjeras: un estudio piloto : [Pronunciation and identity in foreign language learning: a pilot study]
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Revista RedELE. - Madrid : España Ministerio de Educación y Ciencia. - 1571-4667. ; :35
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study is to investigate the level of anxiety in emotional expressions produced by learners of Spanish as a foreign language in two conditions: before and after receiving instruction on pronunciation. The study also investigates how native speakers evaluate the expressions produced by Spanish learners in these two conditions. The results show that the learners feel more comfortable when they are allowed to pronounce as they wish without instruction. When students practice the same sentences after receiving explicit feedback on how to pronounce them, they feel less like themselves and less comfortable. However, when the productions read by the learners in these two conditions are evaluated by native speakers, they prefer the versions in which the students were instructed on how to pronounce. These readings are perceived as more similar to the target language and as sounding more natural.
