  • Hardworking women: representations of lone mothers in the Swedish daily press
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Feminist Media Studies. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1468-0777 .- 1471-5902. ; 21:1, s. 132-146
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Lone mothers are a diverse group but it has been argued in the previous research that they tend to be homogenised. This article explores representations of single mothers in Swedish newspapers. Material from the two largest morning papers and the two largest tabloids was collected from the years 2015–2017. The results of the study suggest that although the newspaper representations do not fully reflect the diversity of social realities, there are indeed varying images of lone mothers in the sample. A recurring representation is as a comparatively poor and hardworking—even heroic—woman, who in political argumentation is referred to as someone in need of societal support and policy reforms. A less frequent representation, that often occurs in lengthy, in-depth pieces, is the affluent official person who despite her prosperity struggles with combining single (good) motherhood with her career, or the middle-class woman who becomes a lone mother via assisted reproductive technologies. Teenage motherhood (i.e., age), race/ethnicity, sexuality, and welfare dependence are seldom, if at all, alluded to. There is no vilification or condemnation of the lone mother, as has been found in research on other national contexts.

  • Transformation or Continuity? The Impact of Social Media on Information : Implications for Theory and Practice
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 75th ASIS&T Annual Meeting: Information, Interaction, Innovation, vol. 49. - Silver Springs, MD : American Society for Information Science and Technology. ; 49:1
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This panel debates whether the ways in which social media are changing the nature, creation, seeking, use and sharing of information constitute a transformation or are primarily marked by continuity. Ubiquitous and everyday access to social media (for some) seems to be bringing about changes in social practice, including of information-related activities, such that conceptualisations of information itself are potentially reshaped. Discussants draw inspiration from the pervasive impact on information activities of the everyday adoption of social media. At a theoretical level they also draw inspiration from the analytic resources of contemporary practice theory and its emphasis on materiality and embodiment, routine and change, social expectations and social identity, and knowledge as a process. All the participants of the panel have conducted new empirical research on social media use with a focus on its deep as well as broad impact. The audience members are invited to discuss with the panelists questions such as how social media relate to routinised daily practices and institutionalised practices and hierarchies, how their use refashions social relationships, how they turn information seekers and users into information managers, producers and creators and shape perceptions of information authority and trustworthiness, and how a new theorisation can help librarians, information professionals and researchers understand change and assume a proactive role in it.

  • An examination of the possibilities that altmetric methods offer in the case of the humanities
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the ISSI 2013 – 14th International Conference of the International Society for Scientometrics and Informetrics. - 9783200031357 ; , s. 721-727
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The advantages of altmetrics — the diversity of dissemination channels analysed, the speed of getting data, the openness of methods, and the ability to measure impact beyond the ‘scholarly realm’— could be seen as especially promising for fields that currently are difficult to study using established bibliometric methods and data sources. This paper reviews the benefits of using altmetric methods to analyse the impact of research in the humanities and tests some of the most common altmetric tools on a small sample of publications and authors. The findings indicate that many of the problems identified in research on the use of bibliometrics on the humanities are also relevant for altmetric approaches. The importance of non-journal publications, the reliance on print as well the limited availability of open access publishers are characteristics that hinder altmetric analysis. However, this study provides only a few examples and further studies are needed in order to examine the possibilities that altmetric methods offer.

  • Citation analysis on the micro-level : The example of Walter Benjamin's Illuminations
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Journal of The American Society For Information Science And Technology. - : Wiley. - 1532-2882 .- 1532-2890. ; 62:5, s. 819-830
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article employs citation analysis on a micro level- the level of the cited document; in this case, Walter Benjamin's Illuminations (1968/2007). The study shows how this frequently cited publication-more than 4,000 citations in Web of Science-has been received. The growth of citations and interdisciplinary citing is studied, and a novel approach-page citation analysis-is applied to study how different parts of Illuminations have been cited. The article demonstrates how bibliometric methods can be used together with qualitative accounts to map the impact and dissemination of a particular publication. Furthermore, it shows how bibliometric methods can be utilized to study intellectual structures in the humanities, and highlights the influence of the humanities on the social sciences and sciences.

  • Interdisciplinarity and the intellectual base of literature studies : citation analysis of highly cited monographs
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Scientometrics. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0138-9130 .- 1588-2861. ; 86:3, s. 705-725
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article studies interdisciplinarity and the intellectual base of 34 literature journals using citation data from Web of Science. Data from two time periods, 1978-1987 and 1998-2007 were compared to reveal changes in the interdisciplinary citing of monographs. The study extends the analysis to non-source publications; using the classification of monographs to show changes in the intellectual base. There is support for increased interdisciplinary citing of sources, especially to the social sciences, and changes in the intellectual base reflect this. The results are explained using theories on the intellectual and social organization of scientific fields and the use of bibliometric methods on the humanities is discussed. The article demonstrates how citation analysis can provide insights into the communication patterns and intellectual structure of scholarly fields in the arts and humanities.

  • Babies, Bodies and Books : Librarians' Work Early Literacy
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Library Trends. - Baltimore : Johns Hopkins University Press. - 0024-2594 .- 1559-0682. ; 66:4, s. 422-441
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article reports on an empirical study of children's librarians' activities supporting the development of literacy among very young children. The theoretical framework stems primarily from a LIS practice-theoretical perspective where literacy is viewed as corporeal practice. The empirical material consists of a transcript from one focus-group interview with seven children's librarians, and field notes from a series of seven documented observations of program sessions at three public libraries in Sweden. A qualitative content analysis was undertaken, and the empirical material was interpreted with an analytical focus on the concepts of literacy activities, embodiment, and literacy practices. The study shows how bodies act as sites of information and communication. Not only the bodies of the librarians but also the bodies of parents and the children acted as central sites, affecting literacy practices during library programs. The librarians express that their engagement in professional practice has resulted in a certain bodily sense for finding the right level of communicating with babies. The librarians have also learned to trust this embodied judgement as part of their professional expertise.

  • Supporting user involvement in child welfare work : a way of implementing evidence-based practice
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Evidence & Policy. - Policy Press : Policy Press. - 1744-2648 .- 1744-2656. ; 10:4, s. 541-554
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The articel describes and analyses some preliminary working methods for user involvement in child welfare. The models are based on the results of a national project in Sweden where children and young peple have been involved as informants. How experiences and viewpoints from children and young people can be a source of knowledge in child welfare organisatiions is one of the main questions. The performance and the results of the project are analysed in relaton to a theoretical macro-oriented model created to illustrate the need for different kinds of knowledge in supporting the implementation of an evidence-based practice.
