  • Where does the person end and the technology begin?
  • 2017. - 1
  • Ingår i: Disability, Space, Architecture. - London : Routledge. - 9781315560076 - 9781138676428 - 9781138676435 ; , s. 189-193
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • It is difficult, often meaningless to try to figure out where the person ends and the technology starts. The boundaries one has for experiencing the world go beyond the physical limitations of his/her skin and are determined by the system for experiencing the world in which he/she exist. In his book, Steps to an Ecology of Mind, the cybernetics pioneer Gregory Bateson illustrates this point with the example of a blind man with a walking stick. In her book, The War of Desire and Technology at the Close of the Mechanical Age, Allucquere Roseanne Stone describes her feelings after attending a lecture given by the physicist, Stephen Hawking. Stone starts off listening to Hawking outside the overcrowded auditorium through the Public Audio system (PA), but decides she wants to go in and see and listen to him in person. Hernwall uses the concept "cyborg" when considering a human being with his or her technology as a functional unit.

  • The winner takes IT all : Swedish digital divides in global internet usage
  • 2018. - 1
  • Ingår i: Digital Transformation and Global Society. - Cham : Springer Nature Switzerland AG. - 9783030028459 - 9783030028466 ; , s. 3-18
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In the present study, we examined the influence of personality factors and demographic factors on Internet usage. Personality was defined from the Five Factor Model of personality in terms of Openness, Conscientiousness, Extraversion, Agreeableness, and Neuroticism, while demographic factors were defined as gender, age and socioeconomic status (e.g. income and educational attainment). The results from a large, representative Swedish sample (N = 1,694) show that global Internet usage can be explained by a high degree of Extraversion, young age and high socioeconomic status. Our findings are consistent with some previous studies, but in contrast with others. We discuss contrasting results in terms of different study designs, cultures and time periods of Internet development. The results are discussed in terms of the “rich get richer model” and digital divides, and what broader implication our findings might have for society. The study may help facilitate our understanding regarding future challenges in the Internet design.

  • Predictive regulation in affective and adaptive behaviour : An allostatic-cybernetics perspective
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Advanced Research on Biologically Inspired Cognitive Architectures. - Sweden : IGI Global. - 9781522519485 - 9781522519478 - 1522519475 ; , s. 149-176
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • In this chapter, different notions of allostasis (the process of achieving stability through change ) as they apply to adaptive behavior are presented. The authors discuss how notions of allostasis can be usefully applied to Cybernetics-based homeostatic systems. Particular emphasis is placed upon affective states - motivational and emotional - and, above all, the notion of 'predictive' regulation, as distinct from forms of 'reactive' regulation, in homeostatic systems. The authors focus here on Ashby's ultrastability concept that entails behavior change for correcting homeostatic errors (deviations from the healthy range of essential, physiological, variables). The authors consider how the ultrastability concept can be broadened to incorporate allostatic mechanisms and how they may enhance adaptive physiological and behavioral activity. Finally, this chapter references different Cybernetics frameworks that incorporate the notion of allostasis. The article then attempts to untangle how the given perspectives fit into the 'allostatic ultrastable systems' framework postulated.

  • Advances in Justice Conflict Conceptualization : A New Integrative Framework
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: Justice and Conflicts. - Heidelberg Dordrecht London New York : Springer. - 9783642190346 - 9783642428081 - 9783642190353 ; , s. 21-52
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A thorough understanding of conflicts is crucial as conflicts may be destructive to the welfare of individuals, groups, and societies. Conflicts are closely related to justice concerns in that perceived injustices give rise to conflicts and destructive conflicts give rise to injustices. However, the notion of conflicts is rather underdeveloped and the definition of it often taken for granted in justice theory and research. In this chapter we propose a useful conceptualization and classification of justice conflicts. Specially, five types of conceptual distributive justice conflicts, five types of social distributive justice conflicts, and three types of a mixture of both are defined and described. Some of these basic types, in turn, encompass two or more subtypes of conflict. These result in different dilemmas and processes, the natures of which are likey to have important implications for conflict resolution. The present chapter highlights several shortcomings of current conceptualizations of justice conflict, and provides a new integrated framework for a more systematic approach.

  • On Bikers at War : Transformations of Non-Fictional and Fictional Conflicts from Hamlet to Sons of Anarchy: Men of Mayhem
  • 2022. - 1
  • Ingår i: Representing Conflicts in Games. - London : Routledge. - 9781032285597 - 9781032278278 - 9781003297406 ; , s. 30-45
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter discusses how conflicts are transformed from real life, via narratives to a game. It explores four types of conflicts: intergroup, intragroup, interpersonal and intrapersonal derived from a material consisting of three cultural artefacts that are interconnected: Shakespear’s dramaThe Tragedy of Hamlet, the TV-series Sons of Anarchy and the table top game Sons of Anarchy: Men of Mayhem. The fundamental and underlining question in this chapter is what the board game medium is capable of preserving from a Shakespearean drama and real life conflicts. For each step in the transformation the conflicts take on a slightly different form. The world, objects agents and events undergo changes and conflicts are presented in terms of motivation, how they are initiated and how they are turned into events such as direct war player versus player. In the stepwise transformation from Hamlet to Men of Mayhem the characters as such disappear and only function as emblematic objects rather than agents. The main finding of the chapter is that there is no room for intrapersonal and intragroup conflicts in the game. Social structures and social conflicts are the common denominators between non-fiction, narrative and the game.
