    • This book describes the research that has been carried out during the first period (2006-2010) of the Alliance for Global Sustainability (AGS) project "Pathways to Sustainable European Energy Systems". this interdisciplinary project involves more that 40 researchers and addresses various aspects of the challenges faced in transforming the European energy system. Presented in this book are the energy-related methods and models that originate from different scientific disciplines and traditions and that were applied in the Pathways project. Some of the analytical tools are well-known, well-documented, and widely used in academic research. Others have been developed (or refined) during the Pathways project and are therefore unique. The chapters of this book cover around 30 different methods and models used in the Pathways project and presents an overview of the processes through which the research was conducted and the methods and models were co-ordinated.

  • Systems Perspectives on Electromobility

    • The transportation of goods and people is at the heart of the industrial society. Yet transportation relies heavily upon oil – a scarce fossil fuel that contributes to climate change and local air pollution. The term ‘electromobility’ refers to an alternative transportation system based on vehicles propelled by electricity. Electromobility is increasingly seen as favourable in that it could circumvent problems related to both oil and biofuels whilst meeting our mobility needs and desires. However, the virtue of electromobility is not uncontested and a range of questions demand an answer: if electric vehicles are energy efficient; if they are safe; how environmental friendly they are; if metal resource scarcity will limit their use; to what extent driving patterns shape or are shaped by new types of vehicles; if electromobility is suitable only for cars and not for heavy vehicles, or vice versa; and what type of new business models and governmental policy support that is required to stimulate demand for electric vehicles.There is not one final answer to questions like these. However, studying electromobility from different systems perspectives can help to resolve such complex issues. The seventeen chapters of Systems Perspectives on Electromobility 2017 address different topics related to the immensely important issue of whether – and to what extent – our transport systems can and should be energised by electricity.

    • Replacing fossil fuels with biomass for the production of energy carriers, materials and specialty chemicalsis a challenge that now confronts humanity. In which applications shall we use limited resourcesof biomass? How can biomass be refined into the products we want? What is an optimal design of abiorefinery? How is the most advantageous portfolio of policy instruments designed to realise the biorefineriesof the future?There is not one final answer to these questions. However, different systems studies can provide us withcomplementary pieces of the puzzle. These can be valuable by themselves, or be brought together into alarger and more complex picture.     • This document has been created as an aid in the development of strategies for taking Chalmers University of Technology into the 21st century. It is a working document, the purpose of which is to provide input for the design and prioritization of our development activities. In this respect, it has already contributed to our work, both at the school/department levels and at the university as a whole.It is not meant to be a “final report”, but rather to remain a work in process. Each section reflects the strongest impressions made on the person responsible for that section. As a result, some overlap can be found between sections, as it can be essential to review these impressions from different perspectives. The intention has been to cover all subject areas; at the same time retaining the flavor of the individual or group contributions. In 1996, an exchange of experiences and ideas was initiated between the deans of the Schools of Architecture (A), Electrical and Computer Engineering (ED), Chemical Engineering (K) and Technology Management and Economics (I) and the President of Chalmers, concerning the strategic development of Chalmers and its schools. During these meetings, the need for an analysis of current developments in the world was recognized, aiming at improved positions for the individual schools as well as for Chalmers as a whole.In 1997, a trip to the USA was planned, the purpose of which was to harvest ideas and learn from the following prominent American universities: The Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta (“Georgia Tech”, a state university that has climbed up the American ranking lists during the last decade), Motorola University in Schaumburg (a company “university”, an increasingly common phenomenon among major American companies), Northwestern University in Chicago (a private national university that has placed high on the ranking lists for an extended period of time), Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute in Troy, N.Y.(the oldest university of technology in the USA-private), the University of Massachusetts Lowell (“UMass”- a regional state university that has undergone major transformation) and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT- the leading private national university of technology in the United States).The basic idea was for several individuals from each school to be involved (a total of some 22 persons), since the knowledge and experience gained from the trip was to be put into practice. During the autumn of 1997, we therefore divided into four working groups responsible for: 1) development and leadership, 2) cooperation and focus in research and research education, 3) external and internal relations and 4) information technology in education. The different schools were represented in all groups and were assigned to prepare questions within their respective areas of responsibility.We visited the six universities between March 25 and April 5, 1998, and the four working groups were expected to cover the issues they had prepared. Three of the trip’s days were earmarked for exchange of experience and reflection, i.e. the groups described the most interesting or thought-provoking features, suggested which elements might be put to use at Chalmers, and presented these reflections to the other participants.After returning to Sweden, the groups have kept working on their analyses. Using notes from interviews and printed material, the groups have written reports on their observations and what they have learned in the United States. In these analyses, the groups’ learnings are related to the present reality and recommendations for the future at Chalmers. These reports were presented to the Board of Chalmers on June 4 1998, and have now been compiled in this document.

  • European Energy Pathways - Pathways to sustainable european energy systems

    • To meet the challenge of climate change, the world must substaintially reduce emissions of greenhouse gases (GHGs). this must be accomplished in a way that maintains security of supply and competitiveness.This book presents to pathways towards sustainable European energy systems - the "Policy Pathway" and the "Market Pathway". These to pathways differ with respect to where the main responsability lies for transforming the energy system in following the pathway. The Policy pathway takes its departure from the EU Energy and Climate Package, and has a strong focus on targeted policies that promote energy efficiency and energy from renewable sources. The Market Pathway relies more on the market to transform the energy system, and presents a future in which the cost associated with emitting CO2 (and other GHGs) is the dominating policy measure.This book describes the research that has been carried out during the first period (2006-2010) of the AGS project "Pathways to Sustsainable Energy Systems". This interdisciplinary project involved more than 40 researchers and addressed various aspects of the challenges faced in transforming the European energy system. The chapters in this book cover more than 30 topics and presents an overall picture of the results obtained to date from various activities in the Pathways project.

    • This book reports cutting-edge cases of emerging health technologies. Some health care fields are experiencing paradigmatic shifts because of robotic technologies and the new relationships that they create in r-Health (r-Curing and r-Caring) activities. The book explores emerging health care technologies such as image-guided surgical robotics, pharmacy robots, new visualisation methods (3D, 4D & "5D") and home telehealth management systems and their acceptance in the workplace but also, more generally, their special role in business and society. These technologies allow health care professionals to effectively reach far beyond the current service offerings, providing new methods for communication, diagnosis, and treatment. The relocation of certain knowledge areas from physicians to patients in self-care management or the reconfiguration of health care expertise from one health profession to another are examples of topics developed in this book. The book describes the emerging relocation of innovative visual knowledge and expertise within health care organisations and beyond, such as in the patient's home environment.
