  • Too Enabling to Fail – Ethics and Practices in the Legitimation of Nanotechnology
  • 2023
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis reads Beck’s Risk Society in the context of nanotechnology and the politicization of failure in the promise of enabling technologies. It aims to investigate how researchers and innovators legitimate nanotechnology in society. Nanosafety research is the empirical focus, with an approach that builds upon the setting of a Nordic research program. Reflections from STS, in terms of empirical ethics, articulate the conjoining of applied ethics and toxicology in the value-laden endpoint of the (nano)safe society. The thesis exposes three research questions, which broadly correspond to three appended papers. The first question asks how does legitimation crisis in the political economy of research and innovation manifest today? The second question asks how do responsibility practices in responsible research and innovation (RRI) contribute to said legitimation? Lastly, the third question asks how nanosafety researchers reflexively practice anticipation in the legitimation of nanomaterials? The findings are three-fold. First, concerns surrounding legitimation and crisis in the political economy of research and innovation are connected to technoscientific capitalism. Another contribution is the proposal for pragmatism in the European RRI policy community that helps to produce wider legitimation. A third contribution, aiming at the applied ethics of technology, emerges through the study of nanosafety researchers reflexively anticipating the future of nanomaterials. Two further studies are outlined. One will study the Swedish NGO ChemSec, interrogating their ability to reduce the use of toxic chemicals and problematic nanomaterials. The second proposes a field study situated in the Lund-centered nanosafety milieu to explore the implementation of safe-and-sustainable-by-design.

  • Innovation in Complex Adaptive Systems
  • 2014
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Our society is increasingly beset by a range of interrelated crises - with the financial crisis, the energy crisis, and the global warming crisis as leading examples - forming a "meta-crisis" with its roots in processes deeply entrenched in society (Lane et al., 2011), and emanating from large-scale complex adaptive systems so strongly interlinked that they are hard to even define and delimit. This has made our lack of understanding of such systems simultaneously more obvious and threatening, an issue further amplified by empirical developments brought about by new information and communication technology. In response to this, a substrate of semi-congruent critiques and new ideas - the former generally more articulated than the latter - are emerging in a number of major disciplines facing similar challenges, but still without the theoretical foundation needed to align and direct this substrate across disciplinary boundaries. The first part of the thesis attempts to develop such an abstraction by departing from the nature of the large-scale complex systems, concluding that the theoretical crises are founded in common difficulties in approaching the complexity of the systems under study, and attempts to provide an understanding of the challenges related to these kind of complex systems: it may be uncontroversial to suggest that the systems are complex, but it remains unclear exactly what this entails. Based on this understanding, the second part aims to show how a synthesis approach to this type of systems could look by bringing together a number of different research strands facing challenges emanating from such systems, with the goal of forming an integrated, empirically grounded and complexity-informed perspective on change in large-scale complex systems.

  • "Jag har alla åldrar i mig!" : En studie om ålderns betydelser i kulturaktiviteter avsedda för barn, ungdomar och pensionärer
  • 2020
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This study investigates the production of age in three state-funded intergenerational projects, intended to increase age integration between young and old citizens. The main aim of the study is to contribute to the production of knowledge about age as a social category and power system. The study is a small scale one year project which focuses on municipal intergenerational culture activities in one of Sweden’s larger cities. Three intergenerational projects within the fine arts (theater, literature and photography), were selected for the present study. The research questions are: How is age conditioned by the organization of the activity? How is age constructed through interactions within the participant group, and are there any circumstances in which age loses significance through the participants' interactions?, Which age norms become prominent through the activity? The study takes a social constructionist approach due to Vivien Burr. The theoretical framework is based on the theories of Michel Foucault, but also Judith Butler’s ideas about position to analyze how age is constructed. The theoretical discussion relates to the emerging research field of critical age studies, connecting childhood and youth studies with the research field of social gerontology. The results show that age is made significant in different ways. The organized encounters and everyday interactions between young and old participants are regulated through the idea of age difference between young and old. The study shows that the participants are given different conditions and obligations based on both gender and age-related norms concerning freedom, control, technical knowledge, vulnerability, care needs, responsibility, agility and adaptability. The intergenerational activities appear to be organized in a tradition where adulthood becomes the dominant age norm that seems to lack any need for integration. The activities therefore put adulthood in a vague but at the same time superior position in relation to other age groups. On an age-related level, it is apparent that the ages of children, adolescents and the elderly are marked in relation to adulthood.

  • Understanding Energy Behaviour – A Necessity for Supporting Domestic Energy Conservation through Design
  • 2014
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Domestic energy consumption is continuing to increase and the need to decrease consumption is growing more evident. In this research, two studies were conducted to further the understanding of domestic energy behaviour and increase the knowledge of how energy conservation can be supported. The first study was carried out as an interview study to explore both factors that influence people’s energy behaviour and strategies people currently have adopted for reducing consumption. The second study was a field trial that assessed the extent to which an energy feedback system could support households in reducing their consumption. The findings show that many different factors, i.e., factors related to the person, the activity, and the society, influence people’s domestic energy behaviour as well as their engagement in reducing their energy consumption. As these factors collectively set the preconditions for people’s energy behaviour, it is vital to take into account the interconnection of the different factors when aiming to support energy conservation. For systems and products to be successful in supporting energy conservation, they need to match the preconditions in a way that enables people to reduce consumption while still satisfying their everyday needs and goals. As this research have indicated, energy feedback systems can support motivated people who have the ability and possibility to reduce consumption, but will be a less successful support system for people whose consumption is governed by preconditions that they cannot, or will not, change. A holistic understanding of people’s preconditions and their energy related activities is thus required in order to develop successful products, services, and systems that enable, facilitate, or encourage more people to reduce their domestic energy consumption.

  • Bridging Gaps: Sustainable Development and Local Democracy Processes
  • 2001
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis examines the relation between the notion of sustainable development and broad public participation in local decision-making local democracy processes. The empirical part of the thesis is comprised of a field investigation with the purpose of exploring the potential of the interviewed local professionals to work as transformers of the notion of sustainable development at the local level. The findings indicate that they do, how- ever, there exist several obstacles that need to be overcome. One significant outcome is the observation of the obvious lack of influence of the inhabitants on local decision-making. An- other result is that environmental issues are not extensively discussed by local professionals. Yet one more important observation is that the accounts of the respondents reflect a common criticism of the way that proceedings are implemented, i.e., mainly from the top. In this context the vision of sustainable development is not an exception. Taken together, all the problems that the respondents describe as main obstacles may be seen as forming a thorough description of the distance or gap between top-down management and bottom-up needs. The theoretical part of the thesis is based on a review of the literature exploring the themes related to the problematic of bridging the gap between top-down and bottom-up perspec- tives. The review indicates new ways of perceiving this gap in itself. There exist, at least, four distinctive gaps which seem to obstruct positive local development: the gap between top and bottom; the gap between abstract and concrete; the gap between place and place; and the gap between the four dimensions of sustainable development. It is also discussed whether or not it is desirable to develop one single approach with the purpose of bridging all four gaps. Or if it is better to deal with this problematic by structuring for an assembly of methodologies consti- tuting successive layers of transformation, each one bridging a distinct gap. In such a case, it appears essential to keep track of the whole chain of successive layers of transformation. Is such a comprehensive perspective of the different approaches keeping track of the chain that is lacking today? Is there instead a chain of discontinuities, i.e., a chain of gaps?
