  • On being victimized by peers in the advent of adolescence: Prospective relationships to objectified body consciousness
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Body Image. - : Elsevier BV. - 1740-1445. ; 8, s. 309-314
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research indicates that peer victimization is tied to children's negative appearance evaluations. The current study examines whether early peer victimization is also prospectively related to objectified body consciousness. Six-hundred-and-two Swedish boys and girls answered questionnaires at age 10, and again at age 18. Main findings showed that being the target of peer victimization at age 10 was related to more habitual appearance monitoring and body shame at age 18. Gender moderated the relations between victimization and body shame, with victimized girls experiencing stronger body shame than victimized boys. Additionally, whereas boys experienced less body shame than girls, they were equally likely to monitor their appearance. In sum, this study provides preliminary support to the notion that peer victimization is involved in the processes by which young adolescents' self-objectify. Future studies are warranted to further validate these findings. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

  • ”What people tell you gets to you”. On the links between peer victimization and adolescents’ body image concerns
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: 15th European Conference on Developmental Psychology, program book.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Reports of peer victimization peak in early adolescence. This is also a time in life when the body and physical appearance become important for how adolescents feel about themselves. Body image, referring to feelings, thoughts and opinions toward one’s physical appearance, thus become increasingly critical for emotional well-being and psychological functioning. Indeed, individual body image is shaped in interaction with other people – your social interactions are a looking glass for how you come to view and evaluate yourself. But what if your social interactions are repeatedly negative and hostile, communicating that important others (e.g., peers) may not like you the way you are? In this oral presentation, we will argue that it is important to learn more about body image in the context of peer victimization. Four empirical studies on the links between peer victimization and adolescents’ body image concerns will be presented. The studies rely on cross-sectional, longitudinal, and qualitative data deriving from a large sample of young Swedish adolescents. With these studies we offer support for peer victimization being closely enmeshed with adolescents’ body image concerns. In sum, being subjected to peer victimization in the advent of adolescence may have serious and withstanding consequences for how individuals relate to their physical appearance, and to their bodies.

  • Peer Victimisation and Its Relationships with Perceptions of Body Composition
  • 2009
  • Ingår i: Educational Studies. - : Routledge. - 0013-1946 .- 1532-6993 .- 0305-5698 .- 1465-3400. ; 35:3, s. 337-348
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The present study examined the links between children's exposure to peer victimisation, in terms of type and frequency, their body composition and subjective perceptions of body composition. A total of 960 Swedish 10-year-olds (515 girls and 445 boys) completed questionnaires about their peer victimisation experiences, weight and height, and perceptions of shape and stature. Results showed that whereas overweight girls reported exposure to both appearance-teasing and bullying, overweight boys mainly reported repeated experiences of appearance-teasing. When examining the relative importance of body composition (weight and height) and perceptions of body composition on peer victimisation experiences, children's negative body perceptions were more strongly associated with the outcome than were body composition. This study hence stresses that children who are victimised also seem to battle unfavourable attitudes towards their physical selves, which may cause increasing concern as the child enters adolescence.

  • Ethnic-racial identity in Europe: Adapting the identity project intervention in five countries
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Developmental Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1740-5629 .- 1740-5610. ; 20:6, s. 978-1006
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • A global challenge for developmental psychology is to better understand how young people around the world make sense of their identities growing up in pluralistic societies. The study of ethnic-racial identity provides an important lens for this process. This paper describes how five European countries (Germany, Greece, Italy, Norway, and Sweden) adapted the Identity Project, an 8-week school-based intervention originally developed in the United States to promote adolescents’ ethnic-racial identity exploration and resolution. Across the five countries, deep structure adaptations included revised or added content regarding key terminology used, a focus on migration and foreignness rather than ‘race,’ and discussions regarding national and regional identities, in addition to ethnic-racial identities, and how they may relate to one another. The process and content of adaptation we describe addresses two fundamental issues relevant to a globalized developmental psychology: 1) contributing to theoretical advances on key aspects of development by taking sociohistorical context seriously, and 2) moving between etic and emic perspectives to arrive at psychological constructs that can be appropriately studied across diverse cultural contexts.

  • Processes of cyberbullying, and feelings of remorse by bullies: A pilot study
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: European Journal of Developmental Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1740-5629 .- 1740-5610. ; 9:2, s. 244-259
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We investigated cyberbullying in Swedish pupils, distribution processes of the bullying material, the role of actively targeted bystanders, and whether bullies feel more or less remorse when cyberbullying compared to bullying others via traditional means. Seven hundred fifty-nine children and adolescents (aged 9–16 years) participated. Cyberbullies not only targeted their victims, but quite often showed bullying material to other people they knew (39% of cases) and uploaded it onto the internet for others to see (16%). The actively targeted bystanders of cyberbullying mostly did nothing further to distribute the material (72% of cases). However, when they did distribute it further, they tended to help the victim by showing him/her what had been done (13%) more often than showing it to the victim in order to bully him/her further (6%); some others (9%) forwarded the material to other friends. Cyberbullies expressed less remorse than traditional bullies. Findings are discussed in relation to the definition of bullying, and the need for preventive strategies and for empathy raising awareness for cyberbullies.

  • Preference-based health-related quality of life among victims of bullying
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Quality of Life Research. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0962-9343 .- 1573-2649. ; 25:2, s. 303-309
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: No previous study has estimated the association between bullying and preference-based health-related quality of life (HRQoL) (“utility”), knowledge of which may be used for cost-effectiveness studies of interventions designed to prevent bullying. Therefore, the aim of the study was to estimate preference-based HRQoL among victims of bullying compared to non-victims. Methods: A cross-sectional survey data collection among Swedish adolescents aged 15–17 years in the first year of upper secondary school was conducted in the city of Gothenburg in Sweden (N = 758). Preference-based HRQoL was estimated with the SF-6D. Regression analyses were conducted to adjust for some individual-level background variable. Results: Mean preference-based health-related quality of life scores were 0.77 and 0.71 for non-victims and victims of bullying, respectively. The difference of 0.06 points was statistically significant (p < 0.05) and robust to inclusion of gender, age, and parental immigrant status. Conclusions: The preference-based HRQoL estimates in this study may be used as an upper bound in economic evaluations of bullying prevention interventions, facilitating a comparison between costs and quality-adjusted life-years.

  • Adolescents’ Experiences of Cybervictimization and Body-related Concerns
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Digitalt på WABF, 2021 webbsida.
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Research so far indicate that adolescent’s that are victims of cyberbullying also struggle with poor body image. However, since previous research on the connection between cyberbullying and body concerns has focused solely on body image little is known about the relationship between cyberbullying and other body concerns. The aim of this study was therefore to examine the relationships between cybervictimization and three body-related concerns: body-esteem, self-objectification, and internalization of body ideals (Frisén & Berne, 2020). The aim was also to examine these relationships not only to cybervictimization in general but also to appearance-related cybervictimization more specifically. The sample comprised 482 adolescents (233 girls and 247 boys; aged 13-15) from four Swedish schools. The results showed that 20.5% of the participants reported being the victim of cyberbullying directed at their appearance. Victims of appearance-related cyberbullying suffered from more body-related concerns: they had a poorer view of their general appearance and of their weight. They also reported more body shame, thin-ideal internalization, and appearance-related pressure from the media. A novel finding was also that body-related concerns were not related to cyberbullying in general, as has been implied in earlier research, but specifically related to cyberbullying directed at the victim’s appearance. The findings from this study can be used when developing preventions and interventions since it shows that victims of appearance-related cyberbullying suffer from the double burden of both struggling with victimization and also struggling with a range of body concerns.
