  • A Cry for Care But not Justice : Embodied Vulnerabilities and the Moral Economy of Child Welfare
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Affilia. - : SAGE Publications. - 0886-1099 .- 1552-3020. ; 35:2, s. 231-245
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores the pivotal role of the body for political recognition and rights claims in child welfare "moral" interventions. I examine how the bodily figures in child welfare assessments, linking these manifestations to the concept of the moral economy of care. A sample of assessment reports from a Swedish municipality, all addressing violations of children's bodies or integrity, are used as empirical material. I show how the psychosomatically suffering child is being best "heard" as vulnerable. I also argue that such a moral economy of care silences children's accounts of gendered and racial injustices. Furthermore, racialized moral divides are indicated when assessments of different child bodies are considered. A concluding remark points to need for a child welfare moral economy of social justice that responds to structural intersecting injustices in childhoods, including to those of a racialized child welfare and its individualized and symptom-oriented services.

  • Reflections on the hegemonic exclusion of critical realism from academic settings : alone in a room full of people
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of Critical Realism. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1476-7430 .- 1572-5138. ; 17:4, s. 374-389
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, I discuss my personal experience of the issues that can arise when adopting critical realism in academic contexts dominated by irrealist (positivist, phenomenological and post-structuralist) methodological approaches. I draw inspiration for my analysis from the concept of Gramscian hegemony and the concept of ‘authenticity’. These concepts are related because hegemonic processes prevent individuals from freely expressing themselves. In my case, academic hegemony has resulted in social pressure to sacrifice my authentic critical realist self in order to achieve academic success. I also discuss groupthink dynamics, suggesting that they are a mechanism by which hegemony–and denial of individual authenticity–can be achieved. This paper is meant to be a theoretical and reflexive discussion, which could be the starting point for empirical studies investigating the situation of a critical realist in a hegemonic academic context.

  • Sami tourism in marketing material : a multimodal discourse analysis
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Acta Borealia. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0800-3831 .- 1503-111X. ; 39:2, s. 115-137
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The study of tourism marketing communication is an important aspect that contributes to the understanding of how destinations and locals are portrayed. Through the so-called circle of representation, images can spread from tourism marketing to other media, such as tourism photography. Marketing material in the form of 118 brochures, 3000 Instagram posts and a guidebook portraying the Sami population mostly in Swedish Lapland, but also in Finnish Lapland as well as Finnmark, Norway, have been collected and analyzed. The focus is on pictorial and textual elements and eight previously conceptualized themes have been used to guide the analysis. The focus was on the portrayal of the Sami Indigenous population. The materials were collected through a direct qualitative content analysis and analyzed through a multimodal discourse analysis. The results show that there is still a tendency to portray the Sami based on exoticism. This can spread to different media channels, but there are also discrepancies that hint at a gradual change in how Indigenous populations such as the Sami are presented. The results of this study show the potential for the use of social media channels such as Instagram for Indigenous entrepreneurs and destination management organizations to educate, attract and entice potential visitors.

  • Young and Vaccinated? : Children and Young People’s Perspectives on Covid-19 Vaccinations
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract
    • The research project is inspired by an ongoing study showing that although children and young people are central subjects to the debates on vaccine-preventable diseases, and constitute the main target of vaccines, young people are largely absent in public debates and research about vaccination-related attitudes and decision-making processes. In the pre-pandemic time, vaccination attitudes were commonly discussed in relation to parents’ views and decision-making processes concerning preventable “child diseases”. Despite the fact that the focus has been on parents, children have been central to arguments and practices, as both positive and negative attitudes toward immunizations may be expressed as care for children. The perspectives of children and young people themselves, particularly in relation to covid-19 vaccinations, are largely unexplored. In this research project, interviews will be conducted with children and young people, from the age of 12, about their views, decision-making processes and resistances in the context of covid-19 vaccinations. Focusing particularly on children and young people in Sweden whose views differ from the views of parents, health professionals or other adults, this project aims to foreground resistances in childhoods and youth in general and expand the notion of resistance in vaccination contexts in particular. Experiences from different Swedish Regional Councils and diverse procedures concerning assessments of age and maturity will be included in order to explore how young people navigate in terrains that requires adult consent and how these procedures enable but also constrain children and young people’s vaccination-related decision-making.

  • Home setting after stroke, facilitators and barriers: a systematic literature review
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Health and Social Care in the Community. - : Hindawi Limited. - 1365-2524 .- 0966-0410. ; 26:4, s. e451-e459
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper seeks to improve the understanding of the interaction between patients with stroke and the physical environment in their home settings. Stroke care is increasingly performed in the patient’s home. Therefore, a systematic review was conducted to identify the existing knowledge about facilitators and barriers in the physical environment of home settings for the stroke rehabilitation process. Based upon Arksey and O’Malley’s framework, a Boolean search strategy was performed in the databases; CINAHL, Medline, Web of Science and Scopus. Fifteen articles were retained from the literature search conducted between August and November 2016, and two researchers independently assessed their quality based on the Swedish Council on Health Technology Assessment guidelines. The results suggest that despite the healthcare system’s ongoing shift towards home-based rehabilitation, the role played by the physical environment of home settings is still considered a side finding. Moreover, the research appears to focus mainly on how this environment supports mobility and activities of daily living, whereas information regarding the psychosocial and emotional processes that mediate the interaction between stroke survivors and their home setting are missing. A lack of information was also found with regard to the influence of different geographic locations on the stroke rehabilitation process. Future investigations are therefore needed to advance the understanding of the role played by the physical environment of home settings in supporting stroke recovery.

  • Understanding hallmark event failure : A case study of a Swedish music festival
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Event and Festival Management. - 1758-2954 .- 1758-2962. ; 8:2, s. 172-185
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeHallmark events can be very beneficial for host communities, not least due to their potential in attracting tourists. The Peace & Love music festival was the hallmark event of the Swedish city Borlänge. In 2013, the event organization declared bankruptcy and canceled the forthcoming festival. The purpose of this paper is to identify and discuss the factors that caused the failure of the 2013 Peace & Love festival.Design/methodology/approachThe case of the Peace & Love festival is analyzed using three data sources: interviews with the former members of the event organization; secondary data describing the Swedish festival industry; and festival visitors’ perspectives represented by comments on social media. An organizational ecology perspective frames the analysis.FindingsThe results of the study reveal that the failure of the event can be understood by a combination of three components: an organization in a vulnerable position, a strong new competitor entering the Swedish festival market, and uncertain visitors searching for the new place to be.Originality/valueVery few studies have researched event failure, although the subject is a recommended priority within the field of festival studies. This study presents a thorough examination of a hallmark event failure, which contributes to this area of knowledge and provides relevant information for organizations and host cities.

  • Exploring the nexus between sustainable tourism governance, resilience and complexity research
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Tourism Recreation Resarch. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0250-8281 .- 2320-0308. ; 48:3, s. 352-367
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Governance and complexity have increasingly become subjects of interest within research on sustainable tourism. Governance has been marked by a turn to more corporatist and networked policymaking structures. At the same time, the use of the concept of complexity in research on tourism destinations and governance is gaining momentum in an effort to address the links in increasingly networked systems as well as the interrelatedness of the multiple features of a tourist destination. Meanwhile, resilience has emerged as a new buzzword in research on sustainable development and governance which denotes the ability of a destination to cope with and adapt to change. This article reviews the literature on destination governance to identify critical issues and trends and discusses the relevance of complexity approaches. Evolutionary studies and research on resilience in a sustainability context are becoming part of this discussion. The review sheds light on the limitations and merits of each of these concepts, as well as on their nexus. The article concludes with some key areas for future research on destination governance. The aim of the review is to contribute to conceptual clarity and to advance the application of complexity approaches in research on destination governance.

  • One foot wet and one foot dry : transition into motherhood among married adolescent women in rural Vietnam
  • 2008
  • Ingår i: Journal of Transcultural Nursing. - : Sage Publications. - 1043-6596 .- 1552-7832. ; 19:4, s. 338-346
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study explores married Vietnamese adolescents' perceptions and experiences related to transition into motherhood and their encounter with health care service. In-depth interviews were conducted with 22 women younger than 20 who were either pregnant or had newly delivered. It emerged from the narratives that young women experienced ambivalence in the transition to motherhood in that they felt too young but also happy to be able to please their husband and the extended family. Patterns were shown indicating that the participants experienced lacking power with regard to decisions in relation to pregnancy, delivery, and contraceptive usage. Feelings of being patronized and ignored in the encounter with health care providers were seen in the narratives. Findings might be used for reproductive health care providers, social workers, and educators in their contact with young mothers to empower them to make their own decisions with regard to marriage, childbearing, and contraception.

  • Speaking Bodies – Silenced Voices : Child Protection and the Knowledge Culture of ‘Evidencing’
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Global Studies of Childhood. - : Sage Publications. - 2043-6106. ; 11:3, s. 252-264
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Using the metaphors body and voice and drawing on critical contributions on biopolitics, this article interrogates children’s participation rights in a knowledge culture of ‘evidencing’. With child welfare and protection practice as an empirical example, I analyse written assessment reports from a Swedish child welfare agency, all exemplifying how social workers evidence needs for protection and reasons for removing children from the home. I discuss how ‘evidencing’ equals a knowledge culture of seeing-believing and predicting-believing and the search for visibly damaged bodies and underdeveloped minds. I furthermore problematise how such conceptualisation of evidencing foregrounds children’s ‘speaking’ bodies while silencing their voices. By showing these manifestations of evidencing, this critical contribution discusses some wider epistemic concerns for fields influenced by the knowledge cultures of ‘the evidence-based’.
