- The methods of the Guide to the Expression of Uncertainty in Measurement, e.g. Law of propagation of uncertainty or Monte-Carlo simulations, are the most applied guidelines in the framework of measurement sciences. These methods require a-priori knowledge of the statistical distribution of the taken sample. However, in some practical cases, this condition cannot be fulfilled. In descriptive statistics, analysis methods are known that do not required knowledge of the underlying distribution of the data. One well-known algorithm is the bootstrapping. In this contribution, the bootstrap algorithm is applied to the surface analysis to derive confidence intervals of estimated parameters, exemplified by the adjustment of an elliptic ring-focus paraboloid. Introducing kernel density estimation, the unknown probability density functions of the estimates are approximated and transformed to the resulting focal area to derive the level of confidence of the intervals.

- Grundmuster von Begriffsbildungsprozessen von Schülerinnen und Schülern einer Beschreibung und Analyse zugänglich zu machen, ist ein höchst interessanter und relevanter Bereich der Mathematikdidaktik. Die Autorin widmet sich dieser Thematik, indem sie einen durch philosophische und psychologische Einflüsse geprägten Theorierahmen nutzt, um individuelle Begriffsbildungsprozesse in ihrem Wechselspiel mit Lernsituationen zu verstehen. Dabei wird die Perspektive auf die Lernenden in ein konstruktives Verhältnis zur fachlichen Strukturierung gesetzt. Die empirische Studie zum Begriff der negativen Zahl zeigt die individuellen Begriffsnetze von Lernenden sowie deren Entwicklungen auf. Die Ergebnisse tragen zur Restrukturierung des mathematikdidaktischen Gegenstandsbereichs bei.

- This paper explores the implications of evolutionary aesthetics for aesthetics as a normative venture. First, it develops the thesis that Aristotle's cognitive theory of metaphor can be explained historically as originating in the perception of human beauty, mate choice, and thus sexual selection. The Aristotelian principle, in accordance with which the wording of a metaphor must be ”strange, but not too strange” (that is, deviate from everyday language yet not be unintelligible or too weird) is, namely, mirrored in the biological theory of ”optimal outbreeding”, according to which humans and animals choose partners that are precisely ”different, but not too different”. We may surmise, then, that the idea of beauty has originally been transferred from the perception of bodily beauty to that of language. Second, however, on the basis of a discussion of Homer’s image of waves as ”the broad backs of the sea” it is argued that such an empirical explanation of the evolutionary origins of the perception of beauty does not affect aesthetics as a normative discipline.
