  • Schnittstelle Vernissage : Die Besucher als Wegbereiter und Multiplikatoren zeitgenössischer Kunst
  • 1991
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • How does art become Art? What is it that actually happens when a work of art is presented, as such, at an opening and gets accepted as Art? Who arc the actors, the decision makers, how do they interact, how does the self-structuring, selfgenerating, intricate system work that governs the interface between art and non-art? What is the importance and influence of the artists, the gallery owners, the art writers in journals and newspapers, the mass media, the visitors to the openings?Research in this area has so far mostly concerned art preferences, or the function of art as a social distinction marker. But the process through which the decision is made whether a particular object is accepted as art, - or rejected as such - has received much less attention. Subject of this thesis is the transition, in the interface between private and public, through the interaction of a loosely knit, fluctuating, self-structuring network of many different actors, national and international. The emphasis is on the starting point of the process, i.e. the opening, more precisely such openings where new, hitherto unknown art and/orartists are presented. At such openings, the visitors have no way of finding out beforehand what they are supposed to think, and have to fonn opinions on their own. This makes the situation very different from that in a museum, or in a gallery presenting already established art.The main empirical material of the thesis consists of a number of extensive interviews with influential professionals and connoisseurs ln the art scene in Stockholm and- as a comparison- Vienna. The results of a questionnaire, answered by visitors to openings, are also included. A picture emerges where the opening is seen as a focal point for the ongoing discourse on new art, where professionals, but also interested and informed amateurs, meet and interact. There is a quite extensive consensus in judgements of the new art, though such judgements are almost never a topic of the actual opening conversations. No such consensus exists, however, when work is presented that tries to break the prevailing ideas about art, and the openings and their audience consequently do not have a decisive role regarding the acceptance or rejection of such, in a real sense, innovative art. Thus, a main function of openings is to funnel and focus the ongoing discourse and discussion by bringing together many different agents and actors in the art world, in a situation that gives a good - and unobtrusive - opportunity for a constant cross-checking within a much wider network, a network that ultimately decides if a new piece of art is to be accepted- or not.

  • Gespräche in einer Krise : Analyse von Telefonaten mit einem RAF-Mitglied während der Okkupation der westdeutschen Botschaft in Stockholm 1975
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • When crises develop, people are confronted with difficulties beyond those experienced in normal everyday activities.  Due to the perceived threats inherent to such situations, familiar behaviors may prove ineffective, and such attempts can pose dangerous and unpredictable risks. Crises are extreme situations, occurring at the very edges of human experience. Oral communication in such situations cannot be casual; the seriousness of the situation demands exceptional communicative performance on the part of the participants. Therefore, certainties about everyday communication conventions are called into question. The following work examines conversations during which the participants were involved in an extreme situation. In this particular crisis, a politically motivated kidnapping, the personal involvement of the interlocutors is substantial. A clear and present fear of the situation escalating and the possibility of a failure to anticipate the resulting reactions from the other party(ies) characterize the communicative acts of those involved. Recorded telephone calls during the occupation of the West German Embassy in Stockholm by members of the Red Army Faction (RAF) on April 24, 1975 comprise the basis for this analysis. One of the occupiers speaks with various interlocutors located in an adjacent embassy building. These interlocutors are relatives of the hostages, the Swedish Minister of Justice, and a German official charged with leading the negotiations. In this study, the communicative processes of the crisis are reconstructed. In order to show how the interlocutors attempt to reach their goals in this tense situation with the resources available to them, as well as what they in fact achieve, ethnographic methods of analysis have been employed. This study shows how, despite strong conflicting interests and motives, a shared reality is built through the actions of the interlocutors. The interaction between two key figures in the early stages of the crisis can even be characterized as a form of coalition building. An explanation as to why this collaboration is not retained in the subsequent course of the events, however, leading to an escalation of the situation, is also presented. Furthermore, the following work sets forth qualities needed to interactively build a coalition in a precarious crisis situation, which has arisen between parties characterized by diametrically opposed aims.

  • Geschlechtsübergreifende Personenbezeichnungen. Eine Referenz- und Relevanzanalyse an Texten
  • 2010
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis deals with patterns of variation in the usage of gender-inclusive personal nouns in contemporary German texts. The aim is to examine the existence and shape of such patterns on the basis of textual analyses. The approach is qualitative; the theoretical point of departure is text linguistics and reference-semantics. A functional and social perspective on language is crucial, as well as the notion of relevance. The main strategies for referring to female and male persons with personal nouns are 1) the gender-inclusive masculine (der Lehrer = the teacher), 2) splitting forms (e.g. der Lehrer und die Lehrerin = the male and the female teacher) and 3) gender-neutral forms (e.g. die Lehrenden = ‘those who teach’). The material consists of texts from different contexts, mainly from feminist and academic discourses, but also from popular magazines and newspapers. The texts studied contain a variation between at least two of the three referring strategies. Two main patterns of variation are proposed in the thesis. The first pattern is described in chapter 5 and concerns the art of reference of the current personal noun. Two variation subtypes are distinguished. The first one contains the notion that personal nouns with specific reference are more likely to appear as a splitting form, whereas personal nouns with non-specific reference are more likely to appear in the masculine. The second subtype suggests that personal nouns with reference to the recipients of the current text are more likely to appear as a splitting form. This is considered as an ambition for explicitly including every reader of the text and furthermore as a manifestation of the interpersonal metafunction of language (in the sense of Systemic Functional Linguistics). The second type of variation is described in chapter 6. Here, the concept of relevance is crucial. Focus is on the relevance of pointing out the gender of the referents. The first variation subtype concerns the fact that gender-inclusive masculine nouns are used for denoting groups of people who are stereotyped as male. The second subtype concerns texts where mainly masculine forms are used for gender-inclusive reference. In these texts, splitting forms occur when women are thematically important. The study argues that the patterns found manifest an underlying principle which is central in verbal communication and rhetoric in general: the tension between closeness and distance.

  • from [al'manja] with love : Trans_ feministische Positionierungen zu Rassismus und Migratismus
  • 2014
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • from [al'manja} with love revisits Critical Migration Studies with the insights of postcolonial and decolonial approaches and carves out a perspectlve on power relations that brlngs together transnational feminism and 'trans(gender) polltics'.I dlscuss what racism and migratlsm mean in a German and European context, and work out how they shape hegemonlc understandings of 'Germany' and 'Europe'. These locatlons are understood as geopolitlcal spaces where multiple transnational ti'ans_storles of migrationdiaspora, movement, staying and transing meet, resonate and dissonate. I elaborate on the assumption that the equalization of racism and migratism and the homogenizing use of 'culture' and 'nation' in the field of Ciitical Migration Studies render Europeans of Color unthinkable, as abject positions in migration discourses, even within knowledge production on 'migration' with critlcal intentions. My approach questions essentialized notions of be_Ionging, home and community and I propose the conceptualization of trans_diasporlng - a power sensitive polltical perspective that deconstructs categolical gendering and categorical nationallzation within a postcolonial framework.

  • Der Topos "Nähe" : Ernst Blochs Eintrittsstelle in die Sozialwissenschaften : ein Beitrag zur Ontologie der modernen Gesellschaft
  • 1992
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The present age is a time of major societal change in which the social sciences are again faced with three key problems: the relationship between the social science and societal reality, the elaboration of a meaningful concept of human agency, and the need to incorporate a temporal dimension into theories of the interaction between institutional structures and human agents.Against this background I discuss in the first part of the thesis the work of three theorists - Jiirgen Habermas, Pierre Bourdieu, and Anthony Giddens - who all share the ambition to overcome traditional dichotomies In social and political thought: the social versus the individual, the static versus the dynamic, objectivism versus subjectivism, freedom versus determination. None of the three, I argue, succeeds in providing a satisfactory solution to these key problems. In particular, they fail to account adequately for the time factor. In the second part of the thesis I present an alternative point of departure for grasping reality, one based on Ernst Bloch’s ontology in which the notion of time holds a central position. This permits us to launch our conceptual strategy from a specific point in history, the present, which is the crucial point in the continual process of social becoming. Thus social reality, understood as a process, is constantly produced and reproduced through everyday human practice. Based on this ontological foundation, the concept of social context, the relation between structure and human agency, is an essentially open one and for this reason, it is possible to explain both social change and stability.
