- This paper defends the functional theory of citizenship on the grounds of the conceptual map of contemporary models of citizenship that I have developed elsewhere. I address three different types of criticisms. First, the focus is on the arguments of those who believe the legal model of citizenship needs to be abandoned or rejected all together. Several reasons against this suggestion are highlighted. Second, a short discussion follows of some points made by those contributors to this volume who instead think that the legal model should be not be rejected, but that it still needs to be amended or requires development to fit contemporary migration patterns. Finally, I address the criticisms of those who believe the whole enterprise of developing a general theory of citizenship is flawed since there would be no concept of citizenship independently of political contingencies.

- L’articolo propone una rassegna sulle opportunità e i maggiori ostacoli in merito alla partecipazione delle persone anziane alle attività di volontariato. A livello internazionale, il dibattito sul volontariato in età matura si è sviluppato principalmente negli Stati Uniti, mentre l’Europa appare ancora indietro nella ricerca: oltre che auspicare un aumento delle indagini sull’argomento a livello nazionale, sarebbe utile promuovere ricerche comparative e trasversali, presenti ancora in numero esiguo. Tra le evidenze attualmente disponibili, risulta che gli anziani più propensi a svolgere attività di volontariato sono quelli “più giovani”, in buona salute, con un livello di istruzione ed una posizione socio-economica elevati, impegnati principalmente in organizzazioni religiose che operano nel settore dei servizi alla persona. Le principali barriere sono invece rappresentate da pratiche discriminatorie legate all’età. A livello internazionale si rivela controverso il rapporto tra l’impegno degli anziani nel volontariato e in altre importanti attività quali il lavoro e la cura informale. Ad ogni modo, emerge con forza l’esigenza di implementare politiche di reclutamento dei volontari senior, dal momento che le poche esistenti sono spesso poco incisive: in questo senso, un supporto importante può essere fornito dalle esperienze realizzate nel contesto statunitense, le quali hanno prodotto negli ultimi anni delle best practices.

- A growing number of cities have joined creative city networks in the last decade. Through such networks, cities are attempting to transform their creative sectors and become more attractive in terms of tourism and skilled labour. This study investigated the UNESCO Creative City Network (UCCN), and more specifically, its sub-category of gastronomy. The study was of an exploratory character and aimed at contributing to research on city branding from a UCCN perspective. The methodological approach was qualitative and included interviews along with document reviews of official materials (e.g., websites) from member cities. Study results point towards several branding related benefits from UCCN membership such as (i) greater recognition, (ii) increased tourism, (iii) new investment along with the establishment of more creative businesses. Study participants also reported negative consequences such as increased levels of administration and bureaucracy associated with UCCN participation.

- The study combines Science and Technology Studies interest on materiality with knowledge creation and transmission, typical concepts of Practicebased Studies. Knowledge is meant here as a process of socio-material connections. The analysis focuses on a “typical” place of knowledge transmission such as a training course, namely on safety connected to wild fire-fighting. The discursive mobilization of some safety objects during the training makes evident the conflicting positions between the Fire-Brigade and volunteers on safety and fire-fighting. In literature this communicative split is often considered as an obstacle to the development of common understanding and coordinated action. A deeper analysis of discursive interactions highlights the role that dissonance and conflict may play in softening the boundaries between communities of practice and in producing knowledge. The aim of the contribution is also to underline that knowledge not only is an effect of alignment but also of dis-alignment of human and non-human actors.
