- 'China’s North Korean and Mongolian Strategy: A Contemporary Version of‘Manchukuo’ Model', Masako Ikegami (GPI Policy Expert Member and Professor and Director, Center for Pacific AsiaStudies (CPAS), Stockholm University)By abusing its rapidly growing economic and military power, Hu Jintao’s China is assuming a highlyaggressive stance to its neighboring countries geopolitically important to China, who are rich innatural resources yet politically vulnerable. North Korea is a prominent case, and the case hasimplications also for Myanmar and Mongolia. If Japan’s Manchukuo policy in the 1930s is interpretedas (1) a large investment in economic infrastructure for extracting natural resources, (2) militaryinterventions for protecting economic interests, and (3) social-political absorption by means of apuppet government, among others, China’s current strategy toward its neighboring countries can wellbe explained with such a historical model.

- This paper focuses on characteristics of out-of-school activities in Sweden and how they have been institutionally changed. In Sweden, childcare is now regarded as a part of life-long education and understood in a context of children’s rights, rather than parents’ rights. Sweden has experienced massive reforms of childcare. One of the major reforms is the integration of childcare and education.Among many other OECD countries are discussing about the possibility of the integration, Sweden became the first country which actualized it. Factors promoting the integration include the leadership of Prime Minister, Göran Persson, economic recession, national demands for decentralization, eliminating the gap between childcare staff and compulsory education staff.

- International Institute for Industrial Environmental Economics at Lund University has been running MSc in Environmental Management and Policy (EMP) programme, an interdisciplinary, international masters programme for sustainability for the last 27 years. The programme, while keeping its applied and practical nature and dual column of business and policy, has been evolving over time and has produced a great number of sustainability professionals working in various capacities in different corners of the world. Meanwhile, it also faces challenges such as the choice between depth versus breadth, as well as how to incorporate new paradigm such as degrowth and perspectives from global south.
