- From a conceptual-theoretical as well as political perspective, this essay examines the interrelationships between the identity and foreign policy dimensions of Turkey’s Kurdish question and makes policy recommendations. Recent domestic and regional developments present both opportunities and great risks for Turkey’s social, political and territorial cohesion, peace and stability. In order to utilize the opportunities, Turkey needs to simultaneously achieve two goals. Domestically, it needs to successfully continue its present peace process and achieve genuine democratization. This process should culminate in a state of affairs whereby the complex social and political questions underlying the Kurdish question can be processed through the mechanisms of normal democratic politics and with the participation of legitimate Kurdish political actors. One crucial and insufficiently understood challenge the Turkish state and society have to manage during the peace process is the challenge of how to addressing the identity question, which is the formative basis of Turkey’s Kurdish question. This question consists of two separate but interrelated needs. The first is to address the Kurdish need and demands for ‘cultural-national’ recognition. The second is to address the need for a common national identity encompassing all ethnic-cultural groups, and to acknowledge that many Turks identify with Turkishness as such a common identity, which, they feel, should shape the state’s identity. These two challenges can only be met by introducing new and flexible categorizations to which people can feel belonging under different names. In foreign policy, Turkey should consolidate its improved relations with regional Kurds based on interdependence and its redline should be the emergence of a hostile Kurdish statehood in the region, not Kurdish self-rule per se. This, however, should be done without alienating Arabs by defending any particular status for Iraqi or Syrian Kurds. If Turkey fails in these endeavors, however, major destabilizing developments can occur whereby the identity and belonging perceptions of many Kurds as well as Turks can experience significant shifts.

- Kırk yıllık toplumsal cinsiyet araştırması, toplumsal cinsiyetin, çevre politikası ve uygulamasında dikkate alınması gereken önemli bir kategori olmasını sağlamıştır. Şu anda kalkınma ve çevre kurumlarında epey büyük miktarda kaynak ve ilgi toplumsal cinsiyete yönlendiriliyor. Aynı zamanda, toplumsal cinsiyet araştırmaları çok daha sofistike ve teorik anlamda güçlü hale geldiğinden, uygulayıcılar ve politika yapıcıların yanı sıra akademik araştırmacılar arasında da toplumsal cinsiyet araştırmalarının sahadaki çevre uygulaması üzerinde sınırlı bir etkisi olduğuna dair bir gerilim söz konusu.Politikalar toplumsal cinsiyetin ana akımlaştırılmasına yönelmiş, kadınları ve diğer ötekileştirilmiş toplumsal grupları çevre yönetimine ve piyasasına dahil etmeye çalışmıştır. Değişim karmaşık bir hal aldı. Ana akımlaştırma teknokratik bir egzersize dönüşebilir. Toplumsal ilişkileri hiçe sayarak, sadece çevresel yönetişim kurumlarına kadınların eklenmesiyle, çakışan çıkarların müzakere edilebileceğini varsaymak sorunludur. Toplumsal cinsiyet araştırmalarının da kimi zaman destek sunduğu kadınlar ve erkeklere dair kalıp yargılar, politika ve programlarda baskındır. Piyasalara dahil olma yeni seçenekler sunuyor ancak kadın eylemliliğini daha fazla dizginleyebilir. Toplumsal cinsiyet, resmi aygıtın bir parçası haline geldikçe, yani kadınlar kolektif biçimde ele alındığında ama yine de programlarda birey olarak işaret edildiklerinde ve neoliberal yönetimin toplumsal cinsiyetine çok az dikkat edilerek toplumsal cinsiyetin yönetimine odaklanıldığında çelişkiler ortaya çıkıyor. Bununla birlikte, ‘toplumsal cinsiyet programları’na sunulan destek, güçlendirme için hiç hesapta olmayan açılımlara da yol açtı. Toplumsal cinsiyetin anlamının sabitlenmekten uzak olduğu açık ve her bir bağlamda 'toplumsal cinsiyet’in ne olduğunu tanımlamaya yönelik yoğun çaba sarf ediliyor. Bu makalede toplumsal cinsiyete olan ilginin tazelenmesini ve iktidarla olan bu etkileşimin toplumsal cinsiyet araştırmaları, politikası ve uygulaması için ne anlama gelebileceğini ve buradan nereye gidebileceğimizi tartışıyorum.

- This article addresses some aspects of the “Man Question” in feminism, by way of the analysis ofmen’s diverse gender-conscious positionings in relation to gender, gender equality and feminism. Itbuilds on earlier work, making use of theoretical models in feminist literature combined with themicro-sociological concept of passing. Consideration is also given to men’s non-gender-consciouspositionings. The article is primarily concerned with the theoretical and empirical complexities,contradictions and ambiguities of men’s positionings, as when they are self-defined as “feminists” (orsimilar identifications) in radical or deconstructive ways. In this, a Swedish interview data is used.Sweden is considered particularly interesting, with a qualified societal consensus on gender equalityand a broadly positive place accorded to men’s relations with feminism. The authors argue in the finalsection that there is a need to further dialogue between analyses of men/masculinities and themultidimensionality of feminisms, as well as a need for more empirical studies of men’s different(pro)feminist positionings in order to elaborate the theoretical implications of different socialcontexts. The framing presented seeks to provide greater possibilities for such complex, nuanced andsituated understandings of men’s relation to feminism, theoretically, analytically and politically.

- The concept of the Oedipal complex lies at the heart of Freudian psychoanalytic theory, one of the dominant intellectual references of the 20th century, and its influence is strongly felt in cultural production. Roman Polanski, one of the contemporary auteurs, has continued his directorial mission in Eastern and Western Europe as well as in the USA. In his films, fictional male characters from different cultural climates share common Oedipal complex dynamics. This study will analyze the early films of Polanski, focusing on the Oedipal dynamics of male characters in "Knife in the Water" (Nóż w Wodzie, 1962), "Cul-de-sac" (1966), "The Fearless Vampire Killers" (1967), "What?" (Che?, 1972), and "The Tenant" (Le Locataire, 1976) through psychoanalytic film analysis within the framework of Freudian theory. The dialectical relationship between the dominant ideologies in Polanski's fictional world—patriarchy and heteronormativity—and the psychosexual dynamics of individuals will be emphasized.

Bargaining with Place: Experiences of Privilege by European Migrants in Turkey

- This paper unpacks how European migrants living in Turkey experience their privileged status and how they engage in different forms of bargaining with place. Deriving from the literature on lifestyle migration, the article examines the experiences of relative privilege that enabled this group of immigrants to live a good life both financially and emotionally. This study shows that the privileges that come with a strong passport are not independent from the insecurity arising from the structural, economic and political conditions in the country of immigrants. It also explains how they bargain with place to deal with the precarious situations they experience. We introduce the term “place bargainers” mainly referring to the mobility practices of privileged migrants. Hence, we open up the material, cultural, spatial and affective forms of the concept of “privilege”. The empirical evidence for our argument is drawn from 18 in-depth interviews conducted with Polish and British migrants, living in Turkey as part of a larger project.
