  • Gender equality and sustainable development: The need for debate in transportation policy in Sweden :
  • 2001
  • Rapport (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The practical attainment of equality (be it based on gender, disability or age) within the transportation sector supports increased access to mobility. At the same time, goals of sustainable development call into question the environmental and social impacts of travel, thereby implying reductions in mobility, especially with regard to car use. Given such different political goals, gender equality and sustainable development are clearly at odds with each other within the context of current transportation systems based on automobility. How then can these two separate, yet clearly interrelated goals, complement each other so that Sweden moves towards both a sustainable and an equitable transportation system? How can gender equality most effectually be applied as an analytical tool to the discourse surrounding sustainability and transportation policy in Sweden?

  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • [Book:] Being socially and geographically mobile is generally seen as one of the central aspects of women's wellbeing. Alongside health, education and political participation, mobility is indispensable in order for women to reach goals such as agency and freedom. Building on new philosophical underpinnings of 'mobility', whereby society is seen to be framed by the convergence of various mobilities, this volume focuses on the intersection of mobility, social justice and gender. The authors reflect on five highly interdependent mobilities that form and reform social life: * The origin, divisions and implication of physical travel for work, leisure, family life, migration and escape. * Physical movement of goods and their gendered impacts. * The gendered content of imagined travel through televisual images. * Virtual travel via the Internet. * Communicative travel through person-to-person messages via letters, telephone, fax and mobile phone.

  • The influence of gender on daily car use and willingness to reduce car use in Sweden
  • 2004
  • Ingår i: Journal of Transport Geography. - 0966-6923. ; 12:3, s. 185-195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper tests the influence of gender on daily car use and on willingness to reduce car use. Car use is modeled in terms of practical factors combined with manifestations of the specific influence of gender. Willingness to reduce car use is modeled in terms of attitudinal factors using a theory of environmentalism. The results confirm the existence of a gender component. The concluding discussion suggests that more research is needed to further our theoretical understanding and methodological expertise regarding how gender can be modeled in travel research in order to attain current policy regarding a gender equal transportation system.
