  • Children's toy collections in Sweden : A less gender-typed country?
  • 2005
  • Ingår i: Sex Roles. - New York : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0360-0025 .- 1573-2762. ; 52:1-2, s. 93-102
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The aim of this study was to describe and analyze differences between girls' and boys' toy collections in a country that strongly emphasizes gender equality (Sweden). The study was based on the assumptions that toy collections reflect social values in the society where they are found and that Sweden has less gendered values than do many other countries. The toy collections of 152 3- and 5-year old Swedish children were inventoried, and the results were analyzed and discussed in relation to previous research on children's toy collections and toy preferences in North America and Western Europe. The Swedish toy collections were found to be gender-typed in ways similar to those reported in previous research in other countries.

  • Computational Thinking - Forces Shaping Curriculum and Policy in Finland, Sweden and the Baltic Countries
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Digital transformation of education and learning - past, present and future, OCCE 2021. - Cham : Springer Nature. ; , s. 131-143
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Through an increased focus on computing and computational concepts in the school curriculum the Nordic and Baltic countries are preparing to equip themselves to explore the opportunities that Industry 4.0 and beyond can offer. Realising this vision has inevitable consequences for the curriculum in compulsory schooling (preschool to year 9) as new scaffolding for the development of new competencies is needed, and adapting to technological change involves also integrating Computational Thinking topics and skills, as well as elements of programming and digital literacy into existing curricula. The Nordic countries (Finland and Sweden) have chosen not to create a new school subject, advocating the integration of these skills and competencies into existing subjects such as Arts and Crafts, Language, Mathematics and Technology. In contrast, the Baltic countries emphasise introduction of a subject called Informatics in which programming and Computational Thinking skills and competencies are intended to be developed. This paper provides an analysis of approaches taken to scaffolding access to Computational Thinking in the Nordic and Baltic countries.

  • Hans Excellens: om miljardsatsningarna på starka forskningsmiljöer
  • 2010

  • Sexual harassment : Not an Isolated Problem
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Gender Equality in Academia. - Oslo : Cappelen Damm Akademisk. ; , s. 81-106
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Is sexual harassment in academia an isolated problem, or is it linked to the academic work environment and culture? Research at the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences in the University of Oslo supports the latter view. Results show how sexual harassment is associated with problematic features of the workplace organization, environment and culture. This is especially clear in the case of unwanted sexual attention, which is closely linked to professional devaluation and other problems. Other more serious forms (unwanted physical contact, coercion, stalking, assault) are less frequent, yet clearly associated with unwanted sexual attention. The chapter presents and analyzes sexual harassment data in view of other recent research, and discusses why this topic is important, and how research can be improved.

  • Designing Dam Safeties : Perspectives on large scale dams within the intra-actions of technology, nature and human decision making
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: International Commission of Large Dams, ICOLD, Seattle, 2013. - Seattle : ICOLD.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Analyzing the intra-actions between the actors involved, this paper presents results from interviews and participatory observations with local authorities, local inhabitants, power companies representatives as well as dam operators. We argue that the Swedish model for dam safety currently is suffering from a major deficiency as the expertise and understanding of the technical constructions remain among the dam owners and that the societal authority in charge of supervising the dam owners work have no capability of achieving the same level of understanding and thus to take informed and relevant decisions. Furthermore we argue that the lack of technical understanding of dams and hydropower outside of the dam sector has become a huge threat to dam safety as state representatives and political decision makers currently allow and even encourage mining exploitation both next to high risk classified hydropower dams and even within existing hydropower reservoirs. We argue that the actual challenge to safeguard an increased dam safety is by bridging the gap between the multitude of different actors– engineers/operators, users, political decision makers -   in order to generate new understandings and new methodologies to deal with risk, safety and security. It is necessary to bridge the gaps between the sectors and actors involved, and that this should be done through investment in close collaboration between the dam sector and engineering research on the one hand and social sciences and humanities on the other – to ensure understandings of political decision making as well as of technical artifacts and water flows. The geographical focus is on two rivers – the Ume River and the Lule River in the north of Sweden. Both rivers are of major importance for national production of electricity, and the rivers are water suppliers for a large amount of inhabitants.

  • "I Wanna Be Free" : On the Challenges and Coping Strategies of Women Entrepreneurs in Sweden
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Women's entrepreneurship is often presented as important for creating economic prosperity at the national level and is said to offer freedom, independence, and emancipation for women. The purpose of this study is to explore the conditions of women entrepreneurs who have different backgrounds in Sweden. To achieve this purpose, this study focuses on the challenges women entrepreneurs perceive and the coping strategies they employ to navigate these challenges. The study adopts an intersectional gender perspective, grounded in research on entrepreneurship, gender, and ethnicity. It draws on qualitative data collected through semi-structured interviews with women entrepreneurs in Sweden who have different backgrounds. The findings show that the challenges experienced by the women entrepreneurs included lack of support, being belittled, being excluded, having to work harder and be strong and having to adapt. The analysis discusses that these challenges can be understood as a result of gendered perceptions of entrepreneurship and processes of Othering. Ethnicity and race also play a role in shaping these conditions. The interviewed women deal with the conditions through four strategies: the assimilation strategy; the positive strategy, the ambiguity strategy, and the change strategy. The coping strategies are discussed in relation to empowerment and emancipation. From a theoretical perspective, this study contributes to developing concepts and conceptual relationships to capture how gender, ethnicity, and race impact women's conditions as entrepreneurs.

  • What about the future? : The troubled relationship between futures and feminism
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: NORA. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 0803-8740 .- 1502-394X. ; 22:1, s. 63-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This position paper argues that issues related to the future are worth emphasizing and discussing with more feminist fervour and engagement than is now the case within feminist studies and futures studies. It is concluded that feminists cannot just be critical from an outside perspective, but must engage in creating alternative futures. These futures should not be common goals around which to unite, but a way to inspire feminist thinking about different futures. The authors point out the problem that the futures studies field lacks feminist perspectives, and in this position paper they discuss the gap between futures studies and feminism.

  • Speculations on Feminist Reproductive Health Technologies
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: ACM International Conference Proceeding Series. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery (ACM). - 9781450394482
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This one-day workshop invites participants to discuss possibilities of designing with and for reproductive bodies by taking vantage points in existing discussions within HCI which are rethinking approaches to reproductive health and broadening understandings of reproductive bodies beyond the category of women's health. The workshop is grounded in these ongoing discussions, calling for intersectional approaches that account for the pluralities of bodies when designing for and with bodies. Through collective and speculative explorations, we are aspiring to find new directions within reproductive health research, to disrupt binary understandings of reproductive bodies, and to explore interpersonal/relational issues when talking about in/fertility that extend beyond the female body. The aim of the workshop is to bring together HCI researchers that are working with or are interested in bodies and bodily experiences including, but not limited to, in/fertility, menopause, menstruation, transitions, interpersonal as well as more-than-human relations, and are motivated to unpack and expand current practices, but also to imagine inclusive directions of design and research in these areas.

  • Gender Equality in Academia : from Knowledge to Change
  • 2022
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • What is the state of gender equality in science and technology? Gender Equality in Academia – from Knowledge to Change presents the results of a comprehensive research project and program of initiatives at the University of Oslo’s Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Researchers have examined gender equality within the department, looking at reasons for imbalance, and at what occurs when measures to promote equality are implemented. The book opens with an in-depth study of careers, gender issues and gender balance within academia. The study, based on questionnaires, interviews and follow-up evaluation, provides a new and updated understanding of the daily lives of academics in Norway. Among the topics covered are perceptions of equality and gender balance, effects of male dominance, sexual harassment, gender with respect to publishing, and the relationship between gender and diversity. In addition to presenting new empirical data, the book is also an innovative contribution to theoretical development within gender equality research. In the second part of the book, the authors present three working models that elucidate current mechanisms recreating gender imbalance, and challenges for gender equality. The book’s final part consists of analyses of measures taken to increase gender equality within the department and their effects, and what an organization can do to increase gender equality. The range of topics in this book make it relevant for everyone concerned with gender equality in research and higher education. Researchers, administrators, students, other practitioners, and politicians will all find this book of interest.
