  • Sexual and gender-based harassment against police employees in European countries : a scoping review
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Sexual Aggression. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1355-2600 .- 1742-6545.
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sexual and gender-based harassment is a work environment concern, especially in hierarchical and male-dominant organisations such as the police. This scoping review aims to examine the existing literature on such harassment against police employees in Europe to identify the available knowledge and highlight the gaps for future studies. Following the Arksey and O'Malley framework, 16 relevant articles were analysed. Most of the studies were focused on sexual harassment, and gender-based harassment was mostly absent or mixed with other discriminations. The analysis resulted in six main themes: existence of sexual and gender-based harassment; perpetrators; associated factors; consequences; individual response; and impact of organisational policies. The findings demonstrate that such harassment remains prevalent among police employees, emphasising the need for continuous and rigorous supervision, evaluation, and comprehensive revision of policies by police authorities. This study recommends further research to address the identified gaps in this field.PRACTICE IMPACT STATEMENTThe findings presented in this article have the potential to significantly advance the field of police research in Europe by providing a comprehensive map of existing knowledge and identifying important gaps within this research domain. Moreover, the study facilitates the application of more accurate and comprehensive methodologies. Additionally, the outcomes of this research can directly benefit police authorities by offering insights to enhance organizational culture and the work environment for police employees.

  • Gender and Sexuality in Online Game Cultures : Passionate Play
  • 2012. - 1
  • Bok (refereegranskat)abstract
    • How do gender and sexuality come to matter in online game cultures? Why is it important to explore "straight" versus "queer" contexts of play? And what does it mean to play together with others over time, as co-players and researchers?Gender and Sexuality in Online Game Cultures is a book about female players and their passionate encounters with the online game World of Warcraft and its player cultures. It takes seriously women’s passions in games, and as such draws attention to questions of pleasure in and desire for technology. The authors use a unique approach of what they term a "twin ethnography" that develops two parallel stories. Sveningsson studies "straight" game culture, and makes explicit that which is of the norm by exploring the experiences of female gamers in a male-dominated gaming context. Sundén investigates "queer" game culture through the queer potentials of mainstream World of Warcraft culture, as well as through the case of a guild explicitly defined as LGBT.Academic research on game culture is flourishing, yet feminist accounts of gender and sexuality in games are still in the making. Drawing on feminist notions of performance, performativity and positionality, as well as the recent turn to affect and phenomenology within cultural theory, the authors develop queer, feminist studies of online player cultures in ways that are situated and embodied.

  • Female desire in phallocentric industries : A duo-ethnographic interrogation
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Organization. - : Sage Publications. - 1350-5084 .- 1461-7323.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The persistence of workplace inequality requires female subjects to examine their place in exploitative systems of production and consumption, and to identify means for emancipation beyond masculine dominant orders. In this paper we examine our past experiences as young women in the finance and oil industries, the phallocentric and extractive engines of global capitalism. We do this by employing a duo-ethnographic approach and a feminist reading of Jacques Lacan’s ideas on sexual difference, aiming to contribute to the literature on female identification in phallocentric organizations. Our analysis reveals how we oscillated between accepting subordinate feminine subject positions linked to emotional work and striving to access ‘universal’ masculine subject positions linked to success and achievement. At the same time, we both engaged with imaginaries of uniqueness and critique, control and success in order to keep functioning in our roles. Both our stories feature moments of rupture experienced as affective embodied responses, when our organizations placed ourselves or others at risk. We analyse these as moments when cracks were exposed in our fantasmatic survival strategies, leading to our eventual exit from these industries. We conclude that while a feminist Lacanian framework provides a useful lens for understanding processes of female identification in phallocentric organizations, the quest for female desire and subjectivity outside the masculine dominant order requires other (feminist) frameworks.

  • Med passionen som drivkraft : En intersektionell analys av genusvetenskap, de studerande och arbetslivet
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: Tidskrift för Genusvetenskap. - : Föreningen Tidskrift för genusvetenskap. - 1654-5443 .- 2001-1377. ; 35:1, s. 49-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on a national Swedish survey among former gender studies students followed by focus group interviews, this article investigates the students’ perspectives on gender studies and work. We ask how they understand their education in between generic critical knowledge and the labor market. How can the students’ backgrounds and talk about gender studies and work be understood intersectionally? What does it mean for the future of gender studies? The analysis is based on intersectional subject positions as developed by Dorthe Staunæss (2003) and compares the results with other critical feminist studies of higher education (Ahmed 2012; Berggren 2006; Mählck 2013; Orupabo 2014). The analytical method uses the concepts “gap” (Åse 2000), ”in sync” (Staunæss 2010) and “comfortable” (Ahmed 2010) in order to understand the contradicting results of the survey and talk in the focus groups. In our analysis we discuss the gaps the students identify between their studies and their experiences of finding work on the labor market as both significant for the humanities and social sciences in general and as specific for gender studies. The gender studies students are however employed and find their education useful on the labor market, a success that they also ascribe (partly) to their privileged background in terms of class and ethnicity. Among the participants persons with academically educated parents and parents born in Sweden were over-represented. The article also discusses what this skewed participation in gender studies education may mean for the discipline and the labor market for gender studies students. Finally it proposes four directions for the future development of gender studies.

  • “We passed the trust on” : Strategies for security in #MeToo activism in Sweden
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: ECSCW 2019 - Proceedings of the 17th European Conference on Computer Supported Cooperative Work. - : European Society for Socially Embedded Technologies (EUSSET). - 2510-2591.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The #metoo movement can serve as a case for how networked online environments can provide settings for the mobilization of social movements, while also entail serious risks for those involved. In Sweden, over hundred thousand people were engaged in activities against sexual harassments and abuse, where social media were used to collect testimonies and to draft and discuss petitions that were later published in print news media. While HCI research on trust focus on how people trust technical systems, the authorities behind the system, or the user generated data, trust between peers in vulnerable communities is less researched. In this study, based on semi-structured interviews and a survey that involved 62 organizers of the Swedish #metoo movement, we therefore look into the question of how a secure and supportive environment was achieved among participants despite the scale of the activism. The result shows how trust was aggregated over networks of technical systems, institutions, people, shared values and practices. The organizers of the petitions used tools and channels at their disposal such as e.g. already established social media contexts that enabled the #metoo petitions to be formed easily and spread quickly. Establishing a supportive culture based on recognition and shared values was central for the movement. However, when the activism was scaled up, strategies were used to increase security by clarifying rules and roles, limiting access to information, restricting access to groups, and limiting the scope of communication.
