  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The article analyses a case of prosecution for human smuggling. Three film crew members accompanied a Syrian refugee boy from Greece to Sweden, while recording the journey in a documentary that was screened on Swedish public television in 2015. Despite widespread recognition, they were prosecuted and found guilty of human smuggling by all the levels of the Swedish judiciary. Using a variety of materials – text and visual data, observations and interviews – we follow the case as it moves across different arenas: the media, the court and in activism. The analysis is inspired by and further develops de Genova’s notion of the border as spectacle. What conditions for acting and speaking structure the arenas, and how and from which positions can the border spectacle be contested? The motion across these arenas offers an opportunity to disclose the operation of the borders as a regime that controls people’s mobility and solidarity in unequal ways.

  • Waiting in the welfare lines. Exploring everyday racism as waiting in the migration and unemployment complexes in England and Sweden : Väntan i välfärdens köer: Vardagsrasism som väntan i Englands och Sveriges migrations- och arbetsmarknadskomplex

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores how different layers of waiting shape the everyday lives of women asylum seekers in the UK and unemployed women in Sweden. We examine the continuity of waiting between and within the migration, labour and welfare complexes. The analysis identifies three layers of everyday waiting: everyday waiting as repetition, everyday waiting as forced and denied work and everyday waiting as invisible and disposable time. We argue that the constant neglect of people’s time–and hence lives–enables exploitation, precarisation and insecurity. The article shows that waiting is a central aspect of how racism is organised and legitimised within the welfare system. While issues of waiting have gained increased attention in social work research, the relationship between waiting and racism remains undertheorised and understudied. This article attempts to contribute to this line of research.

  • Critical Practices of Law
  • 2020
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The judicial field has emerged as an arena on which political and social contestations over racism and structural inequalities increasingly are taking place in Sweden. This article is part of a larger project which aims to understand what kind of space the law provides for protection from, and debate about racism, and how anti-racist and migrants’ rights activism relate to this space. Based on part of the material (interviews with legal practitioners) this paper explores what we understand as “critical practices of law”. While the interviewees are practicing within the institutions of the law, many of them underscore that their participation is hesitant and filled with tensions. Within this tension we find different strategic re-articulations of legal practices and the interviewees’ understandings of what legal practice can be/create in terms of spaces, communities and framings. Theoretically, the paper engages in feminist and intersectional critique of law and the state.
