  • Vad är överturism? : En kunskapsöversikt
  • 2020

  • Frequent flyer programmes and the reproduction of aeromobility
  • 2010
  • Ingår i: Environment & Planning A. - : SAGE Publications. - 0308-518X. ; 42:1, s. 241-252
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is now increasingly recognized that aviation is an important driver of individual and global mobility. Growth in mobility is not evenly distributed, however: recent studies indicate that a relatively small, highly mobile part of society may account for a large share of the total distances travelled. In reviewing one of the processes that may lead to growth in individual aeromobility, the paper focuses on frequent flyer programmes (FFPs) as an institutionalized framework for high mobility, detailing how these programmes reward and thus increase interest in aeromobility. Results are linked to a number of observations regarding the interrelationship of high mobility and social status, and substantiated by a survey of FFP members and their perspectives on benefits provided by such programmes. It is argued that FFPs reward high mobility and discursively interlink frequent flying with social status, which is an important element in the development of mobility patterns which shape and create the social structures that 'necessitate' air travel.

  • Frequent Flyers Programmes as Mobility Boosters? Implications for Sustainable Aviation.
  • 2009
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aviation is an important driver of individual and global mobility and emissions associated with transports. Recent studies indicate that a relatively small, highly mobile part of society may account for a large share of the total distances travelled. This phenomenon is as yet insufficiently understood. In addressing this situation, the paper reviews the processes leading to growth in mobility, and goes on to focus on frequent flyer programmes (FFPs) as an institutionalized framework for high mobility, detailing how these programmes reward and thus increase interest in mobility. Results are linked to a number of observations regarding the interrelationship of high mobility and social status, and substantiated by a survey of FFP members and their perspectives on benefits provided by such programmes. The paper ends with a discussion of the implications of FFPs for growth in aeromobility and its sustainability in a climate change context.

  • Ecosystem services for urban destination development : Potential for sustainability
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Management of Tourism Ecosystem Services in a Post Pandemic Context. - London : Routledge. - 9781032248080 - 9781003280217 ; , s. 133-151
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter addresses opportunities and challenges in urban planning by implementing the concept of ecosystem services in an urban tourism and destination development context. In analysing ecosystem services in urban tourism, we contribute to an emerging literature focusing on urban ecosystem services. An important research gap is also addressed; despite the importance of tourism for cities, there is hardly anything written about the relationship between urban tourism and ecosystem services. This chapter first examines the concept of ecosystem services in relation to the development of urban green infrastructure, primarily based on a literature review. Thereafter, two case studies are conducted in cities in the south of Sweden, to examine the development of green infrastructure in practice. These studies are based on a combination of document analysis, interviews, and on-site observations. In this chapter, it is argued that ecosystem services is a fruitful concept for understanding sustainability challenges in relation to urban tourism. Ecosystem services can also be used as a framework for developing management solutions in urban tourism, aiming both at adapting to effects of climate change and at enhancing tourist experiences in urban environments.

  • Phygital time geography, or: what about technology in tourists' space-time behaviour?
  • Ingår i: Tourism Geographies. - 1461-6688.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The paper argues for the renewed relevance of time geography in tourism in light of the use of mobile technologies and ubiquitous connectivity. The paper proposes the concept of phygitality to understand how digital technologies are used in physical space, and how the interaction between the physical and the digital reconfigures tourists’ projects, paths, bundles, and constraints. The theoretical contribution builds on fifteen semi-structured interviews. The analysis shows that capability, coupling, and authority constraints are altered and mediated by digital devices. In the phygital time-space, tourists orient themselves in physical spaces, influenced by digital information; they create phygital paths and move between stations that result from the overlaying of digital information onto the physical space. Tourists’ goal-oriented mobility results in phygital projects, where logics of efficiency and optimization reduce the liminality of the tourist experience. Tourists’ bundles are created within and outside the physical vacation prism through digital communication.
