  • More Power to the People : Electricity Adoption, Technological Change, and Labor Conflict
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Economic History. - : Cambridge University Press. - 0022-0507 .- 1471-6372. ; 81:2, s. 481-512
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Will technical change spur conflicts in the labor market? In this study, we examine electricity adoption in Sweden during the first decades of the twentieth century. Exploiting that proximity to hydropowered plants shaped the electricity network independently of previous local conditions, we estimate the impact of electricity on labor strikes. Our results indicate that electricity adoption preceded an increase in conflicts, but strikes were of an offensive nature and most common in sectors with increasing labor demand. This suggests that electrification provided workers with a stronger bargaining position from which they could voice their claims.

  • Running out of time : Using job ads to analyse the demand for messengers in the twentieth century
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Economic History Review. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0358-5522 .- 1750-2837. ; , s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Youth labour remained important well into the twentieth century, although it is often elusive in traditional sources. In this article, we investigate messengers – a category of occupational titles, including errand and office boys, which is thought of as youth jobs. We sketch the long-term development of the occupation by making use of digitised Swedish daily newspapers and discuss demand-side, supply-side and institutional factors for the disappearance of the occupation. Our investigation suggests that the messenger jobs reached their peak around 1945 and thereafter decreased to low levels in the 1960s. We find that employers looking for messengers were large organisations that needed in-house help with deliveries and simple office tasks. These employers originally aimed at young men aged 15–17 years. The minimum age requirement was not loosened over time; instead, employers began to announce for older workers. We interpret this as employers’ adapting to a situation where the supply of young messengers had decreased. Employers made their ads appealing by emphasising good working conditions and career prospects, indicating that there was still a demand for messengers despite the changing times.

  • Risk Preferences and Gender Differences in Union Membership in Late Nineteenth-Century Swedish Manufacturing
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Feminist Economics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1354-5701 .- 1466-4372. ; 24:1, s. 114-141
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Women are generally seen as less inclined to join trade unions. This study matches firm–worker data from the Swedish cigar and printing industries around 1900 and examines information on men and women holding the same jobs; such data are rare but important for understanding gender gaps. The results explain the gender gap in union membership among compositors, but not among cigar workers. Differences in union membership varied considerably across firms, with the largest differences found in low-union-density cigar firms where indirect costs (that is, uncertainty and risk) accrued in particular to women workers. The lack of gender differences in mutual aid membership indicates that women were not hard to organize but avoided organizations associated with greater risk for employer retaliation and uncertain returns according to a cost–benefit analysis.

  • Arbetarna och tekniken : Svensk fackföreningsrörelse, rationalisering och arbetsmarknadspolitik 1920–1950
  • 2024
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This dissertation analyses the dynamics between trade unions, technological change, and labour market policies in Sweden, focusing specifically on the Metal Workers’ Union (Metall) from 1920 to 1950. By exploring archival materials, the study reveals how workers actively responded to and influenced technological changes and industrial rationalization, thereby shaping Sweden’s labour market policies.A significant portion of the dissertation examines the internal deliberations within Metall, highlighting the divergent viewpoints between the union leadership and rank-and-file members. These discussions, revolving around strategies to navigate employer-initiated rationalization efforts, reflected a spectrum of views. While the leadership often advocated for rationalization to foster class cooperation, the rank-and-file typically maintained a critical stance. The tensions over rationalization peaked during the major metalworkers’ strike of 1945, leading to agreements establishing a regulatory framework across Swedish industries. The findings underscore that workers were not passive recipients of technological change but were instrumental in negotiating the terms of rationalization, influencing the evolution of the Swedish labour market. For instance, the dissertation highlights the establishment of central institutions in the 1940s that reinforced class cooperation in matters relating to rationalization. In conclusion, this dissertation posits that the strategical response of the trade union movement to rationalization was crucial in shaping the Swedish labour market model in the 20th century.
