  • Food Organization Matters : Paradoxes, problems and potentialities with Rangifer tarandus, traditional food for Inuit and Sámi
  • 2017
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • AbstractAboriginal Inuit of the Arctic Canada and indigenous Sámi of Fennoscandia hold onto cultural values such as sourcing traditional food from their land; these peoples still live – at least partially – in a subsistence economy. Both were traditionally nomadic, and nowadays, Inuit travel to hunt, while Sámi reindeer herders still follow their herds during periods required. Given their lifestyle, nomadic patters, work values, ethics, natural adaptation, and the central tenet of their food production and eating habits, both of these societies constitute an interesting case about self-employment, subsistence, food production and organization – including food-sharing by which income is voluntarily distributed according to custom, to the needy. However, much remains to be known about how they adapt to problems and engage in these matters. Whereas quantitative methods best answer why questions, we opt for a qualitative approach that is better suited to how questions. In a qualitative study, we observe the preservation of and respect for traditional knowledge and competencies. Community entrepreneurs organize their society with a high level of respect, networking, and reducing economic risk. We also identify tension between mainstream and traditional culture in the framing process, and how different types of frames were used to develop consensus around their core cultural food. We show and identify a process model of how the Inuit and Sámi communities engaged in frames and framing to develop consensus through self-respect of traditional knowledge, but to adjust and influence challenges to their historical culture.

  • Managing competence acquisition and financial performance : An empirical study of how small firms use competence acquisition strategies
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of engineering and technology management. - : Elsevier BV. - 0923-4748 .- 1879-1719. ; 30:4, s. 327-349
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Past research has neglected how small firms manage competence acquisition. Based on transaction cost literature, this article identifies competence acquisition management strategies and their implications for performance. We explore this issue using survey data from 842 small, knowledge-intensive firms. The results outline four aspects of competence acquisition management: (1) competence absorbers, (2) social acquirers, (3) market acquirers, and (4) nonacquirers. Furthermore, we hypothesized and found that market acquirers score higher in terms of financial performance than firms following the other strategies. The market acquirer strategy proved particularly effective under conditions of high dynamism.

  • Ecosystems transformation through disruptive innovation: A definition, framework and outline for future research
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Research. - : Elsevier. - 0148-2963 .- 1873-7978. ; 147, s. 16-26
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this study, we develop a definition and a framework for ecosystem transformation. We suggest a circular model of four main mechanisms to provide an alternative explanation of ecosystem evolvement. Interview data are used to develop a model that integrates value creation logics at its core with evolutionary mechanisms. An emphasis on firm-specific technology development sets in motion strategic and technological engagement by other firms in the ecosystem. This comes about through firms that take responsibility for change and actors that adopt new ecosystem roles to drive the whole ecosystem towards transformation around new value propositions. This signifies that disruptive innovation and technological advancement in response to market needs drive ecosystem transformation through new value creation. Our comprehensive framework offers an outline for further research in the domain of ecosystem transformation.

  • How much does the “same-gender effect” matter in VCs' assessments of entrepreneurs?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of Business Venturing Insights. - New York, NY : Elsevier. - 2352-6734. ; 12
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Our study uses cognitive mapping techniques to take into account how the same/opposite gender influences the cognitive evaluations of venture capitalists (VCs). Contrary to what has often been discussed in previous entrepreneurship literature, our results report women VCs evaluate women entrepreneurs more critically, and men VCs evaluate men entrepreneurs more critically. However, overall, the VCs' vaguer processing and lower rating of women's venturing compared to men's indicate a general structure of subordinating women's venturing compared to men's venturing. Ultimately, this contributes with an alternative view to explain what we see on the VC scene: women entrepreneurs are more likely to be rejected. We discuss implications of these results as well as implications for future study.

  • Diversity, innovation and entrepreneurship : where are we and where should we go in future studies?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Small Business Economics. - : Springer New York LLC. - 0921-898X .- 1573-0913. ; 56:2, s. 759-772
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper, we review and comment upon the development of the literature on diversity, innovation, and entrepreneurship. In an overview of previous studies and various strands of literatures, we outline and argue that to better understand the intricate dynamic relationships between diversity, innovation, entrepreneurship, and regional development there is a strong need to further develop “the economics of spatial diversity.” We further argue that this development may benefit from combining various literatures based upon sound economic micro-foundations, to develop a more absolute understanding of diversity and fulfill the need of more clear mechanisms for future empirical testing. Obviously, this is important both from a research point of view and in order to provide policymakers with a powerful set of analytical tools. We call for more analytical work and more high-quality empirical studies. With a set of papers, we believe this special issue to provide a contribution in this direction. © 2019, The Author(s).

  • Industrial ecosystems: A systematic review, framework and research agenda
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Technological forecasting & social change. - : Elsevier. - 0040-1625 .- 1873-5509. ; 208
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is confusion surrounding the concept of industrial ecosystems (IEs). This research therefore presents a systematic literature review on the subject of industrial ecosystems and outlines several paths for future research. The paper defines the key characteristics of IEs, identifies three perplexity drivers that contribute to the conceptual ambiguity of IEs, proposes a four-tier integrative IE framework that outlines the core components of IE research, and presents a conceptual model that clarifies how synergetic effects emerge, leading to IE transformation. Articles are categorized into four categories (industrial symbiosis, metabolism, architecture, and orchestration) from which ten propositions are delineated. The study encourages researchers to tap into several areas from the view that this is a broad, but still rather unexplored area of research with high relevance for policy.

  • VC Stereotypes About Men and Women Aren’t Supported by Performance Data
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Harvard Business Review. - Boston : Harvard Business School Publishing. - 0017-8012. ; :March 15
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Male entrepreneurs are the beneficiaries of the overwhelming majority of venture capital investments. But are their ideas really better investment opportunities for VCs than those pitched by women? Not necessarily. In a two-part study, researchers observed that venture capitalists adopt markedly different stereotypical notions of female and male entrepreneurs during their decision-making processes. These stereotypical notions, which cast men as having traits better suited to starting successful companies, don’t hold up when compared with venture performance data from annual reports. In other words, there is no statistical evidence that many myths about female entrepreneurs are true.
