  • Legislative arts : interplays of art and law
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Aesthetics & Culture. - Abingdon : Taylor & Francis. - 2000-4214. ; 14:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The relation of law and art is conventionally understood through a disciplinary divide that presents art as an instrument of legal practice and scholarship or, alternatively, presents law as potential context for artistic engagement. Moving beyond disciplinary definitions, in this article we explore how art and law, as modes of ordering and action in the world, often overlap in their respective desires to engage existing material orders. Whereas law's claim of producing order appears self-evident, we try to highlight, through a concept of legislative arts, the often-overlooked similar function of artistic practices. At the heart of what we refer to as legislative arts are practices that aim to challenge law's claim of authority in ordering social life through tactical combinations of elements of art and law. In examining a set of examples that include the Tamms Year Ten campaign to close a super-max prison in the United States, the work of Forensic Architecture and practices of passport forgery, we aim to highlight the possibility of manifesting social orders beyond an exclusive reliance upon state laws. Pointing to the potentials of such legislative arts practices, this article suggests that the material ordering quality of artistic and legal practices can, and perhaps should, be weaponized for challenging and remaking the world of unjust state laws.

  • Food systems sustainability: For whom and by whom? – An examination of different 'food system change' viewpoints
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Development Research Conference 2018: “Rethinking development”, 22–23 August 2018, Gothenburg, Sweden.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The United Nations identifies the food crisis as one of the primary overarching challenges facing the international community. Different stakeholders in the food system have widely different perspectives and interests, and challenging structural issues, such as the power differentials among them, remain largely unexamined. These challenges make rational discourse among food system actors from different disciplines, sectors and levels difficult. These challenges can often prevent them from working together effectively to find innovative ways to respond to food security challenges. This means that finding solutions to intractable and stuck issues, such as the food crisis often stall, not at implementation, but at the point of problem identification. Food system sustainability means very different things to different food system actors. These differences in no way undermine or discount the work carried out by these players. However, making these differences explicit is an essential activity that would serve to deepen theoretical and normative project outcomes. Would the impact and reach of different food projects differ if these differences were made explicit? The purpose of this initial part of a wider food system research project is not to search for difference or divergence, with the aim of critique, but rather to argue that by making these differences explicit, the overall food system project engagement will be made more robust, more inclusive and more encompassing. This paper starts with some discussion on the different food system perspectives, across scales, regions and sectors but focuses primarily on the design of processes used to understand these divergent and at times contradictory views of what a sustainable food system may be. This paper draws on ongoing work within the Mistra Urban Futures project, using the food system projects in cities as diverse as Cape Town, Manchester, Gothenburg and Kisumu as sites for this enquiry.

  • Global flows in local language planning : Articulating parallel language use in Swedish univerity policies
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Current Issues in Language Planning. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1747-7506 .- 1466-4208. ; 17:1, s. 56-71
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The language policies of three Swedish universities are examined as instances of language planning in local contexts. Although Sweden has the national Language Act of 2009 as well as a general Higher Education Ordinance (SFS 1993:100; SFS 2014:1096), language planning for higher education is left to the purview of individual institutions. Since language planning in local contexts often involves the intersection of locally situated communication needs and wider circulating ideologies, the present study considers how national language planning goals are taken up and reinterpreted by higher education institutions. In particular, the focus is on universities whose policies are framed using the Nordic language planning concept of ‘parallel language use,’ which has emerged over the last twenty years as a way to theorize a sociopolitical balance between English and Scandinavian languages. The concept indexes a range of issues related to the relative position of Swedish and English, including linguistic tensions surrounding international aspirations and national responsibilities for universities and the mitigation of purported domain loss by Swedish to English. Drawing upon a discourse analysis of policy approach, we analyze the policies of these three universities as examples of local language planning, focusing on how they engage with ideas related to parallel language use while also expanding upon the concept to include the linguistic needs of local students and staff.

  • ICH and Identity : the use of ICH Among Global Multicultural Citizens
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Research Handbook on Contemporary Intangible Cultural Heritage. - Cheltenham : Edward Elgar Publishing. - 978 1 78643 400 5 - 9781786434012 ; , s. 194-215
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This chapter explores how people with a multicultural identity, that is people with no particular place-based identities, not asserting ancestral connections to the land, and a lack of sense of belonging to a single culture, develop a distinctive way of using traditional forms of intangible cultural heritage, specifically cuisine in terms of food diversity, sense and taste experiences, and culinary savoir-faires. Through exploring how multicultural people give meaning and use local and fusion cuisine as an intangible heritage, the chapter discus how globalization, serial migration and multiculturalism are redefining the notions of originality and authority as traditional defined by the 2003 Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage.

  • ‘Arsenic of the size of a pea’ : Women and poisoning in 19th-century Sweden
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of History. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0346-8755 .- 1502-7716. ; 40:1, s. 97-118
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • It is one of criminology’s (few) established truths that women commit far fewer violent crimes than men do. This has been especially evident when it comes to deadly violence. Besides witchcraft and infanticide there is, however, another serious crime that has been associated with women: poisoning. This article studies female poisoners in 19th-century Sweden. The investigation shows that poisonings were fairly common during this period, albeit far from being an exclusively female affair. The empirical findings reveal that these crimes were directed at several different categories of victims: spouses, children and elderly household members, as well as other women. It is also shown that a considerable number of the women accused of poisoning was acquitted, in many cases thanks to the strict process rules associated with the statutory theory of legal proof. Theoretically, the article hypothesizes an understanding of these poisonings where agency is placed at the centre. They are thus seen as acts where (female) subjectivity was created during this period.

  • Hur rapporteras från en rättegång och varför? : Rättegångsrapportering som medietransformation
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: HumaNetten. - : Linnaeus University. - 1403-2279. ; :46
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
