  • The Implementation of Conservation Policy and the Application of Solar Energy Technology in Small House Areas: Stockholm, Sweden
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Historic Environment: Policy and Practice. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1756-7505 .- 1756-7513. ; 13:2, s. 171-195
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper investigates the dynamic between protection of the historic environment and the application of solar energy technology on 1- or 2-family houses in Sweden. More specifically, the building code relating to the installation of photovoltaic (PV) panels on house roofs and how existing policies are implemented in Stockholm City is investigated in order to better understand the challenges in reconciling renewables and the conservation of built heritage. Especially when applied in urban areas PV panels may have a large impact on socio-cultural values, making them difficult to insta where the historic environment is to be protected from large changes. By using a mix of methods (policy analysis, case studies, and interviews) we come to the conclusion that municipalities should develop routines and guidelines that offer homeowners precise information on the potential of solar energy and requirements motivated by concern for the historic environment. Guidelines that are well-known, clear and also require homeowners to dismount exhausted panels could work both to protect built heritage and to promote more use of solar energy in some small house areas.

  • The role of singletons in S 7 compactifications
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Journal of High Energy Physics. - 1029-8479 .- 1126-6708. ; 2019:7
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We derive the isometry irrep content of squashed seven-sphere compactifications of eleven-dimensional supergravity, i.e., the left-squashed (LS7) with N = 1 and right-squashed (RS7) with N = 0 supersymmetry, in a manner completely independent of the round sphere. Then we compare this result with the spectrum obtained by Higgsing the round sphere spectrum. This way we discover features of the spectra which makes it possible to argue that the only way the round spectrum can be related by a Higgs mechanism to the one of LS7 is if the singletons are included in the round sphere spectrum. For this to work also in the RS7 case it seems that the gravitino of the LS7 spectrum must be replaced by a fermionic singleton present in the RS7 spectrum.

  • Science theater on stage: Review of the play The Right Way
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Science as Culture. - 1470-1189 .- 0950-5431. ; In press
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This text reviews a science play that has emerged from a collaboration between performing artists and scientists based in Lund, Sweden. It argues that the play, titled The Right Way, can productively be understood as ‘science metatheater'. Thus, it belongs to a genre which knowingly and self-ironically brings the viewer's attention to the staged nature of the theater performance. As such, science metatheater moves beyond placing ‘science on stage'. Instead, it seeks to place science theater itself on stage. By doing so, it front-stages the challenges of ‘Sci-Arts’ collaborations between scientists and artists, in which competing concerns – aesthetic, epistemological and communicational – may come into conflict with each other.

  • The Problem with Crime Problem-Solving : Towards a Second Generation Pop?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: British Journal of Criminology. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0007-0955 .- 1464-3529. ; 60:1, s. 219-240
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In his 2018 Stockholm prize winner lecture, Goldstein highlighted the need for problem-oriented policing (POP) to be not only effective but also fair. Contributing to the development of POP, this study examines how a wider perspective on problem-solving generally, and scoping in particular, can be adopted to address some of the growing challenges in 21st century policing. We demonstrate that the concept of ‘problem’ was too narrowly defined and that, as a result, many problem-solving models found in criminology are ill-structured to minimize the negative side-effects of interventions and deliver broader benefits. Problem-solving concepts and models are compared across disciplines and recommendations are made to improve POP, drawing on examples in architecture, conservation science, industrial ecology and ethics.

  • Environmental Sustainability for Engineers and Applied Scientists
  • 2019
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This textbook presents key theoretical approaches to understanding issues of sustainability and environmental management, perfectly bridging the gap between engineering and environmental science. It begins with the fundamentals of environmental modelling and toxicology, which are then used to discuss qualitative and quantitative risk assessment methods, and environmental assessments of product design. It discusses how business and government can work towards sustainability, focusing on managerial and legal tools, before considering ethics and how decisions on environmental management can be made. Students will learn quantitative methods while also gaining an understanding of qualitative, legal, and ethical aspects of sustainability. Practical applications are included throughout, and there are study questions at the end of each chapter. PowerPoint slides and jpegs of all the figures in the book are provided online. This is the perfect textbook on environmental studies for engineering and applied science students.

  • Intention in Hybrid Organizations: The Diffusion of the Business Metaphor in Swedish Laws
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: International Journal for the Semiotics of Law. - : Springer Science and Business Media LLC. - 0952-8059 .- 1572-8722. ; 28:2, s. 371-386
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Recent studies of conceptual metaphors in a legal context have often dealt with the power of embodiment. However, the connotations of culturally originated metaphors could be different when they appear in laws and regulations. In particular, the role of metaphor when the legislator wishes to define intention in hybrid organizations is investigated here. The case studied is how a conceptual metaphor of ‘business’ manifesting itself in the Swedish simile adjective affärsmässig (businesslike) has spread over 40 years. ‘Business’ early on acquired connotations such as impartiality and methodical approach, and can be used metaphorically. Introduced in the regulation of public procurement, ‘businesslike’ was later used to regulate conflicts of interest, restrict state aid and also entered tax legislation. Analysis of Swedish court decisions where ‘businesslike’ occurs shows how the emphasis has shifted from public sector efficiency to neo-liberal principles of competition, while stronger social norms related to environmental effects have led to the term being removed from the Public Procurement Act. Elements of a mixed jurisdiction arise from reliance on EU case-law, and national use of ambiguous cultural metaphors in legal texts and court decisions is a plausible response.
