  • The liability of politicalness : Legitimacy and legality in piracy-proximate entrepreneurship
  • 2014
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Entrepreneurship and Small Business. - : InderScience Publishers. - 1476-1297 .- 1741-8054. ; 22:4, s. 408-425
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article explores three entrepreneurial ventures that have evolved in proximity to online piracy. In reviewing the respective cases of Spotify, Skype, and The Pirate Bay, the argument outlines the radically divergent strategies with which the entrepreneurs have sought to legitimise their ventures and underlying technologies. The article concludes that: 1) the context of practices labelled ‘pirate’ are paradigmatic examples of fields in which entrepreneurs must work exceptionally hard to legitimise themselves; 2) in this context, it is crucial that the role of law is analytically isolated from the role of institutionalised legitimacy; 3) success in legitimisation is largely dependent upon the entrepreneur’s ability to demonstrate that the venture is governed by ‘the natural order’ of the economy. It is further argued that piracy-proximate ventures may contribute to the entrepreneurship field, inasmuch as they teeter on the border of being considered too disruptive, and thus suffer from a ‘liability of politicalness’.

  • The Paradox of Openness : Transparency and Participation in Nordic Cultures of Consensus
  • 2014
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The ‘open society’ has become a watchword of liberal democracy and the market system in the modern globalized world. Openness stands for individual opportunity and collective reason, as well as bottom-up empowerment and top-down transparency. It has become a cherished value, despite its vagueness and the connotation of vulnerability that surrounds it. Scandinavia has long considered itself a model of openness, citing traditions of freedom of information and inclusive policy making. This collection of essays traces the conceptual origins, development, and diverse challenges of openness in the Nordic countries and Austria. It examines some of the many paradoxes that openness encounters and the tensions it arouses when it addresses such divergent ends as democratic deliberation and market transactions, freedom of speech and sensitive information, compliant decision making and political and administrative transparency, and consensual procedures and the toleration of dissent.

  • Disembedding food markets in Asia : private organizations, risk and the promotion of international food standards
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Journal of Asian Public Policy. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1751-6234 .- 1751-6242. ; 6:2, s. 196-212
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • International organizations, both public and private, promote trade and market development based on rules and standards created primarily by developed countries in the West. This reflects historical legacies associated with the construction of the post-war order, the historical dominance of western economic powers, as well as specific conceptualizations of the role of states, markets and modes of regulation. Indeed, these manifest forms of regulation, conceptions of safety and risk and reflect specific socio-political contexts defined predominantly by western attitudes and social norms. Equally, private sector organizations have also transmitted regulatory norms, standards and risk perceptions into emerging market contexts, in part reflecting the end-consumer markets in which they operate and thus the need to instil within their value chains compliance standards in order to continue to operate within a specific regulatory context. In emerging regions such as Asia, however, different forms of political organization and socio-economic contexts experience predominantly western forms of regulation in manifestly different ways. In areas such as food safety and risk regulation, for example, the transmission of regulatory norms and standards across borders from developed to emerging economy contexts can have far-reaching and sometimes adverse consequences. Specifically, the transmission of western private regulatory norms have implications for Asian food producers, market access, the organization of food value chains, the costs imposed on food producers and farmers and the sustainability of farming practices. As this article seeks to demonstrate, the imposition of such regulatory norms and standards on Asian food producers may lead to the gradual 'disembedding' of Asian food markets and cause problems for compliance, distributional justice and social well-being.

  • Commitment without confinement : Outpatient compulsory care for substance abuse, and severe mental disorder in Sweden
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Law and Psychiatry. - : Elsevier BV. - 0160-2527 .- 1873-6386. ; 45, s. 60-69
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In Sweden, a person with severe substance abuse or a severe mental disorder may be committed to compulsory care according to two different legislations. Both acts include an option of providing involuntary care outside the premises of an institution - care in other forms (COF) and compulsory community care (CCC), respectively. As co-occurring disorders are commonplace many individuals will be subject to both types of compulsory care. The structures of both legislations and their provisions for compulsory care in the community are therefore scrutinized and compared. Based on a distinction between "least restrictive" or "preventative" schemes the article compares COF and CCC in order to determine whether they serve different purposes. The analysis shows that COF and CCC both share the same avowed aims of reducing time spent in confinement and facilitating transition to voluntary care and the community. But they also serve different purposes, something which is reflected in disparate scopes, eligibility criteria, rules, and practices. Overall, COF was found to be a more "least restrictive" and CCC a more "preventative" scheme. The distinction is associated with COF being an established part of legislation on compulsory care for substance abuse with a universal scope and CCC being a recent addition to compulsory psychiatric care legislation with a selective character.

  • Police Conflict Management : A Scoping Review
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Police and Criminal Psychology. - : Springer Nature. - 0882-0783 .- 1936-6469.
  • Forskningsöversikt (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Police officers frequently interact with the public, and many of these interactions involve some form of conflict. As professionals, and representatives of the state, police officers are expected to handle these conflicts in a professional and just manner to maintain positive relationships with the public. Therefore, solid conflict management skills are necessary for any officer in a democratic society. The present scoping review examines the current state of research on police involved conflicts and conflict management in a police context. Results indicate that a majority of the studies have been conducted in the USA and that many of these studies focus on use of force rather than effective conflict management strategies and methods. The study further indicates a number of methodological difficulties in researching this important area of policing, including difficulties in obtaining data as well as a lack of unified definitions of concepts and methods.
