  • International Copyright and Intellectual Property Law : Challenges for Media Content Producers
  • 2008
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The interaction between national and international laws, and the realities of contemporary global trade in media content in a predominantly digital environment, raise challenges, uncertainties and opportunities for media companies. When it comes to licensing, protecting and enforcing copyright and other intellectual property rights, media companies and their advisers need to understand and make use of not only national but international legal rules. The chapters in this book offer a variety of perspectives on the relevance of international copyright and other intellectual property regimes to media businesses. What do these international rules mean in reality, how are they taken into account in national systems, what challenges do they pose, what sort of future development are we likely to see, and what are the implications of all this for media businesses seeking to benefit from their content production in the international arena? The book is comprised of papers and edited transcripts of talks delivered at a symposium of the same name which took place in Stockholm, Sweden in October 2007 and which gathered together speakers from across Europe representing legal practice, academia, policy-making and media content production and distribution.

  • Non-Conventional Copyright : Do New and Atypical Works Deserve Protection?
  • 2018
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The book draws a picture of possible new spaces for copyright. It expands on whether modern copyright law should be more flexible as to whether new or unconventional forms of expression - including graffiti, tattoos, land art, conceptual art and bio art, engineered DNA, sport movements, jokes, magic tricks, dj-sets, perfume making, typefaces, illegal and immoral works - deserve protection. The contributors offer authoritative, coherent and well-argued essays focusing on whether copyright can subsist in these unconventional subject matters.

  • Biotech Innovations and Fundamental Rights
  • 2012
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Biotechnology is a recognized research area that has increasingly advanced into new technologies and modern practices raising several legal, ethical and regulatory issues. The revolutionary speed of biotech innovations has had a significant impact on the protection of the rights of the individual. Fundamental rights provide a framework within which the justification of limitations and restrictions to biotechnology innovations and research results have to be assessed. The legal regulation of scientific research and scientific investigations impact more and more directly on the freedom of research and therapies as well as on the broad diffusion of knowledge. Closely related is also the debated question of the technological manipulation of life and the boundary of scientific knowledge with regard to the topical question of genetic invention patents and their side effects on access to scientific information and health care opportunities.Drawing on expertise from different disciplines, the volume comprises invited papers and plenary presentations given at the conference entitled “Biotech Innovations & Fundamental Rights” that took place on Januray 20-21 2011 at the Department of Juridical Sciences of the University of Ferrara. Each contribution covers a different aspect of the legal and scientific issues involved in regulation of biotechnology. In particular the focus of attention has been given to genetic research, genetic data, freedom of scientific research in genetics and biotech patents

  • The Right of Access to Information and the Right to Privacy : A Democratic Balancing Act
  • 2017
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This publication gathers presentations from an international and trans-disciplinary workshop held at Södertörn University in December 2016.The workshop entitled The Right of Access to Information and the Right to Privacy: A Democratic Balancing Act was one of the many events which celebrated the 250th anniversary of the Swedish Freedom of the Press Act, the first legal instrument in the world laying down the right of access to official documents. A starting point for the workshop was the assumption that the right of access to information and the right to privacy are both necessary pre-conditions for a democratic society. Researchers from a broad range of fields were invited to discuss how these assumptions should be examined, and how the balance between the two interests should be assessed when conflicting with each other. The objective of the workshop was to broaden our understanding of various national and disciplinary approaches to the democratic balance between the right of access and the right to privacy.Among the conclusions we may draw from the workshop, and the articles emanating from it, is the confirmation of the need to strike the balance between the right of access and the right to privacy. This is certainly difficult, but since the two interests are both of such importance for democracy, we constantly need to make the effort. The articles in this volume contain information on some of the areas that need our further attention.
