  • Gender Fairness in Social Robotics : Exploring a Future Care of Peripartum Depression
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 2022 ACM/IEEE International Conference on Human-Robot Interaction : Alt.HRI - Our Robotics Futures: A Time Capsule - Alt.HRI - Our Robotics Futures: A Time Capsule. - : Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE). - 9781538685549 ; , s. 598-607, s. 598-607
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In this paper we investigate the possibility of socially assistive robots (SARs) supporting diagnostic screening for peripartum depression (PPD) within the next five years. Through a HRI/socio-legal collaboration, we explore the gender norms within PPD in Sweden, to inform a gender-sensitive approach to designing SARs in such a setting, as well as governance implications. This is achieved through conducting expert interviews and qualitatively analysing the data. Based on the results, we conclude that a gender-sensitive approach is a necessity in relation to the design and governance of SARs for PPD screening.

  • What Norms Are Social Robots Reflecting? A Socio-Legal Exploration on HRI Developers
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Social Robots in Social Institutions : Proceedings of Robophilosophy 2022 - Proceedings of Robophilosophy 2022. - 9781643683751 - 9781643683744 ; 366, s. 305-314
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • By relying on theory from sociology of law and data feminism, this study showcases the norms guiding development in human-robot interaction. This qualitative study consists of an ethnography of the HRI conference 2021 and expert interviews which were merged and analysed using an ethnographic content analysis method on NVivo. The socio-legal data feminist lens enables to pinpoint the lack of clear legal involvement, the reliance on the HRI community to develop, and the normative impact this has on the overall development of social robots. This study not only aims to showcase the vital role of HRI developers, but also the need for more critical scholars in this area.

  • NECROROBOTICS : The Ethics of Personalised Resurrection
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: ; , s. 1-4
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Ethical and legal questions of robotic personalisation can be addressed in various ways. While seeking to theorise on ethical issues related to robotic personalisation, this paper proposes the concept of necrorobotics in order to target a particular space of personalisation, governed by a variety of norms: death, and the reuse of dead persons data to create robotic agency. Based on recent advancements in what is here labeled as resurrection technologies, the paper creates a speculative provocation in order to reflect on ethical implications of using AI-tools to bring back the sounds, textual behaviour and animated imagery of a deceased friend or close relative.

  • A Preliminary Case Study on Gender Norms in Robot-Assisted Diagnosis of Perinatal Depression : A Socio-Legal HRI Perspective
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: ; , s. 1-2
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • We propose that an interdisciplinary approach is necessary to better understand the normative gender aspects of automating perinatal depression-care in socially assistive robots and how to take them into account at design stage. Consequently, the aim is twofold: firstly, to understand the existing normative gender aspects within perinatal depression, and secondly, to enable the socially assistive robot to “normatively adapt” to the patient. Both, we argue, are vital in order to automate trustworthy perinatal depression assistance within socially assistive robots, as well as overcome the current social prejudices attached to the condition.

  • A Socio-Legal Gender Perspective Through a Case-Study on Robotic Peripartum Depression Screening
  • 2022
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Mental health disorders are usually gendered, with more women being diagnosed with depression for example. This elicits guidelines on how to diagnose mental health according to symptoms common to women, which in turn normalises those practices. This creates legal norms which are reflected when screening for such conditions; however, they require scrutiny, especially as they become formalised in organisational logics, healthcare structures or design, since those conditions should not be viewed as “women-only” issues. This scrutiny is offered in this presentation by focusing on Peripartum Depression (PPD) and a new technology envisioned to be embedded in healthcare, through socially assistive robots (SARs). PPD is a mental health condition which is said to affect women from the time of conception up to two years after giving birth. The condition is one that resembles major depressive disorder, but difficult to detect due to the stigma associated around PPD. In our previous study looking at automating PPD screening through SARs, we found ourselves and our participants wanting to mirror current practices – which are actually very gendered, especially as partners can suffer from PPD. This is key as SARs are robots designed to interact with humans, and thus somewhat mimic human norms within a specific context to be accepted by the user(s). This led to problematic gendered design implications for the robot in our study, including: (1) that predominantly the screening tool should be for pregnant women and (2) that the robot should be more feminine as it seems more caring and resembles the user. In line with these findings, this paper scrutinises how gendered norms inform the design of robotic technologies, with a basis in socio-legal theory on gender. The aim is to bring a perspective on how Sociology of Law and gender could help challenge such a problematic yet sensitive issue, and be used a theoretical framework to observe, study and challenge those norms in order to shed a critical light on gendered healthcare norms.

  • Spatial Planning and Sociology of Law: Sustainable development issues in constructing infrastructure for the third generation mobile telephone system in Sweden
  • 2007
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The infrastructure for the third generation of mobile telephony, UMTS, is under construction in Sweden. Within three years four operators were to build competing systems to cover 99,98 % of the population. The case of the 3G infrastructure illustrates how sustainability issues are handled in planning and environmental management, with conflicting goals between institutional levels and contradictory legislation. At the national level economic and technological optimism and regional policy is in conflict with environmental and sustainability goals. No comprehensive assessment was made of the entire system; the infrastructure is assessed through one permit for each mast, at the local level, giving the administrative system an extreme challenge, and giving unexpected environmental and social outcomes as a result from the lack of comprehensive assessment. Based on surveys of all local planning authorities, a regional sample of permit processes and examination of legal cases the paper examines the outcomes of the fragmented assessment of the local permit process level, from a sustainability perspective. What are the emerging effects and conflicts? The role of law in central planning with local outcomes in the case of regulating and controlling spatial planning in the case of 3G, will be analysed in this paper.
