- All EU Member States have now transposed Directive 2014/104/EU on damages actions for breaches of competition law into national law. The Directive (and the soft-law instruments accompanying it) not only marks a new phase for private enforcement of competition law but also, more generally, provides a novel and thought-provoking instance of EU harmonisation of aspects of private law and civil litigation.Following up on a previous volume in the Swedish Studies in European Law series, published in 2016, this book offers contributions from top practitioners and scholars from all over Europe, who present and discuss first experiences from the implementation of the new damages regime in various jurisdictions.Topics covered include theoretical and practical reflections on the state of private enforcement in Europe, the balancing of conflicting interests pertaining to public and private enforcement of competition law respectively, and specific legal issues such as causation and the estimation of harm. The authors explore problems solved, problems created, and future challenges in the new regime of private enforcement of competition law in Europe, offering predictions as to issues that may have to be settled through recourse to the European Court of Justice.

- In this book we have gathered a number of prominent scholars who analyze the developments of information and law from their respective perspective. The papers were first presented at a colloquium at the Faculty of Law, Uppsala University in September 2014.The book is divided into two parts. The first part of the book is comprised of the contributions having a more general scope; developments within a new landscape, regulatory matters and questions relating to security, technology and information. The second part sets information and law in contexts and focuses towards more specific matters; fundamental rights in a new context, issues relating to the right to be forgotten and finally, welfare, health and research.The Internet and other information and communication technologies have created exciting new possibilities for connecting individuals across borders and continents. The new technologies also raise significant legal, ethical and political concerns. The Internet has thus permitted the instantaneous dissemination of information as well as created an entirely new arena for hate speech. New information and communication technologies have made possible the creation of large registries and databases with the potential to lead to effective cross-border law enforcement, foster important new research as well as unwarranted mapping of individual persons’ private life. How society responds to this can have an impact on how we perceive democracy, and the realization of the rule of law, as well as on transparency and legitimacy in communication between individuals and states. It also affects the relationship between the public sphere and the individual.

Interests and Actors in European Police and Criminal Justice Cooperation : Legal and Practical Challenges

- The speeches included in this working paper were presented at the conference “Interests and Actors in European Police and Criminal Justice Cooperation: Legal and Practical Challenges” hosted by the Swedish Network for European Legal Studies in collaboration with the Faculty of Law at Uppsala University. The working paper includes the key speeches by some of the most prominent actors in Sweden in this field. After a brief introduction by the editors, the second section includes the speech by Ms Elenor Groth, Head of International Police Co-operation Division at the Swedish National Bureau of Investigation. The third section includes the speech by Mr Anders Perklev, Prosecutor General of Sweden. In the fourth section, Mr Percy Bratt, member of the Swedish Bar and chairperson of the Civil Rights Defenders and the Legal Rights Foundation, develops and reflects on the important issue of the level of protection of human rights in this context. These three complementary views provided by different actors in European police and criminal justice cooperation are finally rounded up by an academic reflection on horizontal agency cooperation in the field of crime and security. In this concluding fifth section, Professor Bo Wennström, Faculty of Law, Uppsala University, tells us why a theoretical perspective is important. In the two appendixes, the power point presentation by Ms Michèle Coninsx, Vice-President of Eurojust, and the conference programme of April 18-19, 2011, can be found.

- Digital democracy has been cutting the edge in fields connected to legal, political and social theory over the last two decades but cross- fertilization and transdisciplinary approaches are still scarce. The impact of ICTs on political and governance processes seem elusive to traditional theoretical settings and mainstream conceptualizations. This is a selection of peer-reviewed conference papers originally presented at the workshop Legitimacy 2.0: E-democracy and Public Opinion in the Digital Age, at the IVR World Congress held in Frankfurt, August 18th 2011. They are also being published in the Law, Technology and Society - Proceedings XXV World Congress of IVR Special Workshop on "Legitimacy 2.0: E-democracy and Public Opinion in the Digital Age", Paper series B, ed. by Ulfrid Neumann, Goethe University, Frankfurt am Main 2012. These papers offer different approaches to findings in the field, the purpose being to go beyond the polarization between the apologists that hold the web to overcome the one-to-many architecture of opinion-building in traditional democratic legitimacy, and the critics that warn cyberoptimism entails authoritarian technocracy.
