  • Social Media Supporting Democratic Dialogue
  • 2013
  • Ingår i: Ambiguous Technologies. - Lisbon : Autónoma University. ; , s. 36-43
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The term of “social media” appears in newspapers and magazines everyday and the huge number of people use social media actively in daily life. Nowadays, in the highly Information and Communication Technology (ICT) developed country Japan, Japanese people enroll in social media and evolve a new way of communicating with others based on the “virtual” social distance between them. Among social media, Twitter has been focusing on its strong power as the tool for political change recent years. While Twitter has of-expressed problems as well as the “traditional” social media, it is characterized by the limited number of characters, strong propagation and optional reciprocity. Those characteristics stimulate people’s communication online and bring about opportunities for social interaction and democratic dialogue. On the other hand, in the deluge of information, we need to nurture skills to utilize critical and rational way of thinking through dialogue not only between others also between themselves internally. This study explores characteristics of social media and differences between “traditional” social media and Twitter, and how the difference affects people’s information behavior in Japan.

    • Organizations and municipalities implements advanced information technology, intranets, in order to enhance information management within the organization.. This technology is implemented with great reliance on the technology aspect. New functions emerge as a consequence of technology, functions not planned for. This paper puts focus one such function, the key persons responsible for publishing on intranets. A descriptive study shows that these persons do exist and describes some problems they appreciate.

  • Images of climate change : A pilot study of young people’s perceptions of ICT-based climate visualization
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Climatic Change. - : Springer. - 0165-0009 .- 1573-1480. ; 134:1, s. 73-85
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Climate change can be difficult for laypeople to make sense of, because of its complexity, the uncertainties involved and its distant impacts. Research has identified the potentials of Information and Communication Technologies (ICT) for visualizing and communicating climate change to lay audiences and thus addressing these communication challenges. However, little research has focused on how ICT-based visualization affects audiences’ understandings of climate change. Employing a semiotic framework and through a combination of focus group interviews and mindmap exercises, we investigated how Swedish students make sense of climate messages presented through an ICT-based visualisation medium; a dome theatre movie. The paper concludes that visualization in immersive environments works well to concretize aspects of climate change and provide a starting point for reflection, but we argue that the potential to add interactive elements should be further explored, as interaction has the potential to influence meaning-making processes. In addition, audiences’ preconceptions of climate change influence their interpretations of climate messages, which may function as a constraint to climate communication.

  • Designing Ubiquitous Media Services : Exploring the Two-Sided Market of Newspapers
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Theoretical and Applied Electronic Commerce Research. - Curico : University of Talca, Faculty of Engineering. - 0718-1876 .- 0718-1876. ; 11:3, s. 1-19
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The two-sided market of newspapers with its two customer groups, readers and advertisers, is changing due to digitalization. This former stable and profitable market has lately suffered from both decreasing subscription and advertiser revenue. In this paper we use the term ubiquitous media environments to represent the vision of future media environments enabling device independent mass-scale distribution of ubiquitous media services in integrated infrastructures. We build upon a two-year action research project where researchers worked together with the Swedish newspaper industry to envision future ubiquitous media services and explore the following research question: how can ubiquitous media services be designed to leverage and balance value in a two-sided market? Five examples of ubiquitous media services were developed in collaboration and thereafter evaluated. These services were then illustrated in movie clips to trigger discussions on how ubiquitous media services can be designed. Drawing on the value aspects of ubiquitous media services from an advertiser and reader point-of-view and the platform owner role of the newspapers in a future ubiquitous media environments, we describe and discuss how ubiquitous media services can be designed to leverage value for advertisers and readers, and how newspaper organizations can strategize ubiquitous media environments. © 2016 Universidad de Talca - Chile

  • Using Volunteers for Emergency Response in Rural Areas : Network Collaboration Factors and IT support in the Case of Enhanced Neighbors
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Proceedings of the 14th International Conference on Information Systems for Crisis Response and Management. - Albi : ISCRAM Association. ; , s. 985-995
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In public services, there is a trend to increasingly utilize collaborations with non-professional volunteers for certain tasks, one example being emergency response. In many of these collaborations, information technology (IT) is an essential tool, and inadequate IT support can have far-reaching consequences—including even the loss of lives. Since a volunteer is a different type of actor, and may have different technical requirements, compared to professionals, there is a need to explore how collaborations between professionals and volunteers can be successfully developed. This paper is based on a case study of the Enhanced Neighbor project, which uses volunteers as first responders in emergency response. The study highlights important factors to consider when involving volunteers, including how IT can foster the collaboration, and the volunteers’ needs for IT support.

  • Ingår i: Game Love : Essays on Play and Affection - Essays on Play and Affection. - : McFarland. - 9780786496938 - 9781476618784 ; , s. 1-10
  • Bokkapitel (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • This is the introduction to the anthology Game Love:Essays on Play and Affection. The first 10 pages were written by Jessica Enevold and the ensuing chapter presentations by Esther MacCallum-Stewart. The whole book was edited together by Enevold & MacCallum-Stewart based on an idea by Jessica Enevold. The Introduction explains the background of the anthology, including an introduction to the ontological model for analyzing game love in games, first drawn up by Jessica Enevold in 2008. It places the book within a context of computer games research, digital culture and HCI-research, making clear some of the connections and selections between previous research of games and emotions and affect and the human component, the player and other roles, of playing games.

  • In the Company of Ghosts : Hauntology, Ethics, Digital Monsters
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt)abstract
    • This thesis explores French philosopher Jacques Derrida’s ’hauntology’ through the lens of digital monsters and feminist theory.Hauntology – a pun on ‘ontology’ and ‘haunting’ – offers an ethics based on responsibility towards that which cannot be said to fully exist, yet has an effect on our everyday lives nonetheless. Like the figure of the ghost, such undecidable existences are neither absent nor present, here nor gone, of the past or the future. In other words: they haunt.By engaging with hauntology through contemporary stories of digital monsters – such as The Curious Case of Smile.jpg, Welcome to Night Vale and Mushroom Land TV - the thesis discusses how such troubling hauntings might be imagined, and what it means to think an ethics based on responsibility towards the undecidable. In this way, the thesis brings together hauntology and digital media, arguing that thinking with and through the figure of the ghost as well as the digital monster may lead to different and critical ways of imagining both the world and ethics. In short, drawing upon feminist theory and creative writing, the thesis maps out a relational ethics of hauntings and internet story-telling.

  • What’s left of the radical left online? : Absence of communication, political vision, and community in autonomist web milieus in Sweden
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: New Media and Society. - London : Sage Publications. - 1461-4448 .- 1461-7315. ; 20:1, s. 384-398
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article presents and discusses results from a study of radical left-wing activism online carried out by the Swedish Media Council, a report that suggested that the Internet (i.e. the web, web 2.0, and social media) is not a prioritized arena for propaganda and recruitment for the radical left in Sweden. The purpose of this article is to re-evaluate some of these findings and add to the discussion on online activity and connectivity in political communication online, as well as to problematize simplified notions of radicalization and recruitment to pro-violent groups. Based on a hermeneutic inquiry regarding modes of communication, representations of political visions, and community, the article shows how the sites and groups studied favor one-way communication before interactivity, that political visions are limited to short-term goals in the immediate future, and that they give very little information about their activist activities to recruit supporters. © The Author(s) 2016
