  • Bringing on the Social : Infrastructuring Libraries Through Zine-making Workshops
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Journal of Creative Library Practice. - 2330-4227.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Public libraries serve as social infrastructures that foster interpersonal connections and promote well-being and cohesion. In order to explore the role played by libraries in the process of social infrastructuring, we conducted a zine-making workshop with librarians. This workshop facilitated collegial conversations and provided an opportunity for participants to familiarize themselves with the concept of social infrastructure and its practical implications in connection with their work. Consequently, both the researchers and librarians gained insight into how libraries function as social infrastructures, and identified areas that require improvement. Furthermore, the workshop also deepened our understanding of how the concept of social infrastructure can be put into practice.

  • In-between strengthened accessibility and economic demands : analysing self-service libraries from a user perspective
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Journal of Documentation. - 0022-0418. ; 73:1, s. 145-159
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose - The aim of this paper is to explore the implementation of self-service at public libraries from the perspective of their users. The implementation of self-service is related to a diverse societal context including for example an overall digitalisation, budget constraints and political expectations on public libraries to contribute to marketing the local community.Methodology - Semi-structured interviews with users and observations have been undertaken at self-service libraries in the south of Sweden. The material is analysed by means of a theoretical framework consisting of previous critical LIS-research, Fairclough’s critical discourse analysis and Habermas’ theory of the colonisation of the lifeworld.Findings - The implementation of self-service is affecting the users’ library practices as well as their expectations on the library. These expectations are shaped by various and sometimes competing discourses. Social implications - To support public libraries’ role as democratic public spheres the complexity of the users’ understandings should be taken into consideration when implementing self-service.Originality/value – The differing expectations articulated by the users, and the various discourses they can be related to, implicate a hegemonic struggle, corresponding to a changing view on public libraries.

  • Public libraries as promoters of social sustainability?
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Information Research. - 1368-1613. ; 24:4
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Introduction. The aim of this paper is to critically examine how public libraries are portrayed as contributing to social sustainability. Meanings ascribed to the concept are investigated and if, and then how, the public library is shaped in relation to it.Method. Library plans from five municipalities in Sweden are analysed and discussed in the light of previous research. Analysis. Bacchi’s method ‘what’s the problem represented to be’ is used to scrutinize what problem the public library is supposed to be part of the solution of. Results. Three policies represent the ‘problem’ as a current threat to democratic values, safety and stability. By favouring social sustainability, the library contributes to robust communities and to enable trust. In two policies sustainability is related to development and change. Conclusions: When libraries are put forth as places fostering users to take responsibility for social sustainability a tremendous responsibility is placed on individuals. Our suggestion for disrupting this argument is to recognise social unrest as a consequence of inequalities and unequal distribution of resources and to acknowledge pluralism and difference. Thereby, libraries may contribute to social sustainability and democracy by being places where social antagonism can be transformed to agonism.
