  • Applying machine learning to media analysis improves our understanding of forest conflicts
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Land use policy. - : Elsevier. - 0264-8377 .- 1873-5754. ; 144
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Conflicts over the management and governance of forests seem to be increasing. Previous media studies in this area have largely focused on analysing the portrayal of specific conflicts. This study aims to review how a broad range of forest conflicts are portrayed in the Swedish media, analysing their temporal, spatial, and relational dimensions. We applied topic modelling, a machine learning approach, to analyse 53,600 articles published in the Swedish daily press between 2012 and 2022. We identified 916 topics, of which 94 were of interest for this study. Our results showed ten areas of forest conflicts: hunting and fishing (35 % of total coverage), energy (24 %), recreation and tourism (11 %), nature conservation (8 %), forest damages (6 %), international issues (5 %), forestry (5 %), reindeer husbandry (4 %), media and politics (2 %), and mining (1 %). The overall coverage of forest conflicts increased significantly over the study period, potentially reflecting an actual increase in forest conflicts. Some of the conflicts were continuously reported upon over time, while the coverage of others exhibited seasonal or event-related patterns. Four conflicts received most of their coverage in specific regions, while others were covered across the whole of Sweden. A relational analysis of the conflicts revealed three clusters of forest conflicts focused respectively on industrial, cultural, and conservation conflicts. Our results emphasise the value of using topic modelling to understand the overall patterns and trends of the media coverage of current land use conflicts, while also highlighting potential areas of emerging conflicts that may be of special interest for planners and policy-makers to monitor and manage.

  • The quest for “nature” in selfies: how platforms shape nature/society relationships
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Journal of Environmental Planning and Management. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0964-0568 .- 1360-0559.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social media and other platforms have become an essential part of meaning-making on outdoor activities, influencing discourses about “good nature” and “good outdoor experiences.” However, much research on environmental communication in online spaces explores such discourses without considering the influence of platforms. This article proposes that “nature” visible online is co-constructed by users and platforms alike. Using the empirical case of nature selfies—an archetype of imagery on social media platforms—posted on Instagram, Facebook, and Tripadvisor, and a small participatory “breaching experiment” aimed at collecting “ugly” nature selfies, we analyse and interrogate nature/society relationships displayed online within the platform contexts of attention economy and affordances. We conclude that these reinforce the desirability of consuming “beautiful” nature, while simultaneously limiting the possibilities for alternative nature/society relationships to be developed and promoted.

  • How online communities are important for rural entrepreneurial change : the library revolt
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Enterprising Communities: People and Places in the Global Economy. - 1750-6204.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • PurposeThis study aims to discuss how an online community interacts with a local community during the entrepreneurial process. By having a contextualized view of entrepreneurship, this study acknowledges the social and spatial dynamics of the process.Design/methodology/approachThe inductive approach used in this study is empirically anchored in the case “the library revolt”. This paper analysed interviews conducted in a selected region in Sweden and followed a netnographic method to capture the social interactions online. By using qualitative modes of inquiry, this study attempts to illuminate the social aspects of the entrepreneurial process.FindingsThis study shows how social media works as a contextual element in entrepreneurship. By presenting interactions between an online community and a rural community, it is shown how entrepreneurial processes in rural areas can be shaped not only through local community relations but also by online interaction. It illustrates how an online context, where actors are located with their own unique set of resources, contributes to rural development. By being a part of an ongoing process of structuration, we can view the actors are gaining access to the resources online, which contributes to the change happening in a local community.Originality/valueThis study adds to the conversation of the role of context in entrepreneurship studies. Rural entrepreneurship largely discusses the local social bonds and actions, while this study includes the online social bonds as a part of the reality in which entrepreneurship is developed.

  • Art as Academic Output: Quality Assessment and Open Access publishing of Artistic Works at the University of Gothenburg
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Art Libraries Journal. - 0307-4722. ; 40:4, s. 26-32
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • How is artistic research and practice output within academia to be quality assessed and made available open access on the internet? Is it possible to integrate artistic research within a framework of bibliometrics, to allocate research funding at an institution? At the University of Gothenburg, a model for addressing these questions has been implemented at the Faculty of Fine, Applied and Performing Arts, through close collaboration between faculty representatives and the University library. The institutional repository of the university now holds a growing collection of openly available output from artistic research and practice.

  • Is large-scale wind power a problem, solution, or victim? A frame analysis of the debate in Swedish media
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Energy Research & Social Science. - : Elsevier. - 2214-6296 .- 2214-6326. ; 83
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Media content analysis was used with the aim of developing an understanding of how the debate on large-scale wind power has played out over time in Sweden, especially in relation to the enactment of national interest areas for wind power. Covering the period 1999 to 2019 and using NVivo for coding and analysis, we reviewed a total of 788 articles in both national and regional daily newspapers. To identify which actors are present in media and how they frame large-scale wind power, we conducted a frame analysis by applying three theoretical elements developed by previous media studies. The first is a diagnostic element used to pinpoint the cause to a problem, the second a prognostic element used to pinpoint the solution to a problem, and the third a motivating element used to identify the person(s) or object(s) suffering from the problem, that is, victim. Our results emphasize that wind power in recent years has been framed as a solution more often than a cause to a problem. One prevailing framing is the localization of large-scale wind power per se and conflicts with other land-uses and national interests. We also identify a tension between international and national policy objectives and local implementation of large-scale wind power. Governmental agencies are the most common framers over time, together with individuals (e.g. locals and second home owners) and wind entrepreneurs. Importantly, whereas politicians and wind entrepreneurs most often frame wind power as a solution, individuals frame it as a cause to a problem.

  • Vindkraft i svensk nyhetsmedia - problem eller lösning?
  • 2021
  • Annan publikation (populärvet., debatt m.m.)abstract

  • The Swedish Media Debate on GMO Between 1994 and 2018: What Attention was Given to Farmers' Perspectives?
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Environmental Communication. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1752-4032 .- 1752-4040. ; 16, s. 43-62
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper presents a longitudinal study of the debate on GMO in the Swedish media, comparing coverage of the topic in the general press and agricultural press. We studied 1399 articles about GMO in food and agriculture published between 1994 and 2018 in Sweden's daily and evening newspapers and agricultural publications. A combination of content analysis and statistical simulation techniques was used to identify structural breaks in the dataset and contribute understanding about how the debate shifted over time. Particular attention was paid to issues of importance to farmers in the Swedish media discourse. Our findings indicate that the debate was most intense in the mid-1990s, after which the frequency of reporting on GMOs declined overall and the debate steadily became less negative. Farmers' perspectives were given more attention than expected in the general media but, surprisingly, smallholder farming and food security in the Global South, which has been central to global and elite debates on GMO, did not appear to substantially affect media discourses in Sweden.

  • Framing woodland key habitats in the Swedish media : how has the framing changed over time?
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Forest Research. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0282-7581 .- 1651-1891. ; 35:3-4, s. 198-209
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The concept of woodland key habitats is well-established in northern Europe, denoting sites in the forest landscape with particularly high biodiversity. In Sweden, woodland key habitats have been inventoried on individual forest owner’s land by the Swedish Forest Agency since 1993. Recently, various actors have questioned the woodland key habitat concept and its policy implications. To investigate how framing of the concept has changed over time we conducted a media analysis based on theories of collective action frames. The analysis covered the period 1991–2018 and a total of 293 articles in daily newspapers. Our results showed that, over time, woodland key habitats have mostly been framed by government agencies, journalists and environmental organizations as suffering as a result of forestry practices and that nature conservation is the solution to this problem. Actors presenting other or conflicting frames are not as common and they occur mostly when the frequency of articles is high. However, it is noteworthy that individual forest owners sometimes framed themselves as suffering economically from the woodland key habitats, which contrasts with the dominant framing. There were no large differences between national and regional newspapers in the framing of woodland key habitats.

  • Explaining the puzzling persistence of restrictions on seasonal farm labour in Germany
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: European Review of Agricultural Economics. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 0165-1587 .- 1464-3618. ; 39, s. 707-728
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The regulation of seasonal foreign farm labour (SFFL) in Germany distorts market outcomes and produces no significant benefits for any of the affected groups. Analysis of the media discourse on this regulation indicates that its persistence can be attributed to the political sensitivity of unemployment and related issues in Germany. To reach these conclusions, we propose a new method for the analysis of discourse data based on a Poisson change point model, and demonstrate that exogenous factors such as unemployment in Germany can explain structural breaks in the media discourse on SFFL in Germany.

  • The Force of Social Media : Rethinking the social and spatial contexts in entrepreneurship
  • 2023
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The aim in this thesis is to develop an understanding of how social media influences the social and spatial contexts in entrepreneurial processes. Social media has transformed the way in which individuals interact, communicate, and experience contemporary society, which in turn may have implications for entrepreneurship. The thesis is based on a qualitative methodology, comprised of ethnographic and netnographic analyses of three empirical cases. The role of social media in entrepreneurial processes is discussed in four separate papers, each exploring a different perspective on the phenomenon. Paper I introduces the topic by illuminating how online communities can function as a context in entrepreneurship and interact with local change processes. Paper II shows how individuals online can influence entrepreneurial processes by forcefully entering into local processes, discussed as "intrusive ties." Paper III focuses on online community entrepreneurship to explore social interactions, spatial factors and the entrepreneurial process. Paper IV considers the entrepreneurial risks and opportunities associated with so-called echo chambers on social media, exploring how they work as social and spatial contexts, and shape the conditions of embeddedness. Using a contextualized view of entrepreneurship from the literature as a point of departure, this thesis provides a critical discussion of, firstly, how social media is becoming a contextual element in entrepreneurship; secondly, how we can use the metaphors of embeddedness and ties to discuss online and local relations; and thirdly, how we can rethink the social and spatial contexts in entrepreneurship. The thesis contributes to the literature by unpacking the role of non-local engagement in local place, demonstrating social media’s role in the structuring social life and entrepreneurial processes. Lastly, the thesis highlights the potential of netnographic methods for understanding entrepreneurship research in our connected society.
