  • The Assault on Journalism. Building knowledge to protect freedom of expression
  • 2017
  • Bok (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • People who exercise their right to freedom of expression through journalism should be able to practice their work without restrictions. They are, nonetheless, the constant targets of violence and threats. In an era of globalization and digitization, no single party can alone carry the responsibility for protection of journalism and freedom of expression. Instead, this responsibility must be assumed jointly by the state, the courts, media companies and journalist organizations, as well as by NGOs and civil society - on national as well as global levels. To support joint efforts to protect journalism, there is a growing need for research-based knowledge. Acknowledging this need, the aim of this publication is to highlight and fuel journalist safety as a field of research, to encourage worldwide participation, as well as to inspire further dialogues and new research initiatives. The contributions represent diverse perspectives on both empirical and theoretical research and offer many quantitatively and qualitatively informed insights. The articles demonstrate that a new important interdisciplinary research field is in fact emerging, and that the fundamental issue remains identical: Violence and threats against journalists constitute an attack on freedom of expression. The publication is the result of collaboration between the UNESCO Chair at the University of Gothenburg, UNESCO, IAMCR and a range of other partners.

  • Scandalous! The Mediated Construction of Political Scandals in Four Nordic Countries
  • 2012
  • Samlingsverk (redaktörskap) (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The purpose of this book is to spotlight the way in which political scandals in four Nordic countries have been launched, directed, dramatized and interpreted through different genres of journalism – in an interactive tug-of-war between editors and various political actors. News institutions help to build political careers – and to tear them down. A mediated scandalization process can make the path from power to powerlessness, from a top position to exclusion, very short. A number of questions are discussed: How important are the norm violations that have led to political scandals? Have the types of scandals changed over time? How may rivals and political opponents use mediated scandals? Are character assassination and demonization typical traits of a scandalization process? Are male and female politicians treated differently? Scandalous! is based on case studies and content analyses of mediated political scandals in Denmark, Finland, Norway and Sweden, including an analysis of the frequencies, types, characteristics and consequences of national political scandals during the period 1980–2010. • Foreword : Rethinking media education in the digital age
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: D. Frau-Meigs, S. Kotilainen, M. Pathak-Shelat, M. Hoechmann and S. Poyntz (Eds.) The Handbook of Media Education Research. - Hoboken, New Jersey, US : John Wiley & Sons. - 9781119166870
  • Bokkapitel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is an urgent need to gain a better understanding of the meaning and consequences of globalization and digitization from the point of view of citizens and media. A changing world puts new demands on education in general, and this challenge is particularly acute for media education, which has an increasingly widening mandate. While the impact of globalization and digitization may appear to cast a net that is wider than the purview of media education, there is no doubt that they are central to our practices as educators and our research objectives. Broad knowledge, a holistic perspective, interest, and collaborative skill are all keys to the success of projects that involve sharing knowledge and experience, best practices, ideas, and resources among a diversity of actors, all with a view to advancing the common cause of media education.
