  • From Vision to Transition : Exploring the Potential for Public Information Services to Facilitate Sustainable Urban Transport
  • 2014
  • Licentiatavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Policy initiatives to promote sustainable travel through the use of Internet based public information systems have increased during the last decade. Stockholm, in being one of the first cities in Europe to implement an Internet based service for facilitating sustainable travel is believed to be a good candidate for an analysis of key issues for developing sustainable travel planning services to the public.Aim: This thesis investigates the past development of two Stockholm based public information systems and their services in order to draw lessons on how to better provide for a public information service geared towards facilitating  environmentally sustainable travel planning through information and communications technology. The overall goal of the thesis is to contribute to an understanding on how to better design and manage current and future attempts at facilitating sustainable travel planning services based on historical case studies.Approach: The thesis draws ideas from the concept of organizational responsiveness – an organization’s ability to listen, understand and respond to demands put to it by its internal and external stakeholders – in order to depict how well or not the two public information systems and their owners have adapted to established norms and values of their surroundings. Results: Overall, the findings from the historical case studies suggest that organizations attempting to provide sustainable travel planning to the public need to design and manage their systems in such a way that it responds to shifting demands on how to provide for information. Implementing and embedding new technologies involves complex processes of change both at the micro level – for users and practitioners of the service – and at the meso level for the involved public service organizations themselves. This condition requires a contextualist framework to analyze and understand organizational, contextual and cultural issues involved in the adoption of new technologies and procedures. Conclusions: The thesis concludes with a discussion on how the findings from the historical case studies may provide lessons for both current and future attempts at providing public information systems geared towards facilitating environmentally sustainable travel planning to the public. Historical examples and issues concerning collective intelligence and peer to peer based forms of designing, producing and supervising public information services identified throughout the study are looked upon and discussed in terms of their possible role in increasing the potential for public information services to facilitate sustainable urban transport.

  • From Maps to Apps : Tracing the Organizational Responsiveness of an Early Multi-Modal Travel Planning Service
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: The Journal of urban technology. - London : Taylor & Francis. - 1063-0732 .- 1466-1853. ; 22:4, s. 87-101
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • An Internet-based system for informing on multimodal travel planning (several modes of transportation) was introduced in Stockholm, Sweden in October 2000 in the form of a web page called trafiken.nu. The web page has a historical value of being one of the first attempts in Europe, and possibly the world, at providing an ICT-based travel planning service geared towards facilitating sustainable travel to the general public. The aim of this article is to investigate the historical development of trafiken.nu in order to draw lessons on how to better provide for a public information service with a potential for facilitating sustainable travel planning. Findings from the study of trafiken.nu suggest that the organizations behind the service have been slow in adapting to shifting media technology practices on how to provide for information which has affected the uptake of the service. Lessons from the case study provide a basis for arguing that organizations attempting to implement public information services would benefit from finding a means of harnessing collective intelligence in order to provide for a more customizable and responsive service to the general public.

  • Policies in Activity-based Flexible Offices -‘I am sloppy with clean-desking. We don’t really know the rules.’
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Ergonomics. - : Informa UK Limited. - 0014-0139 .- 1366-5847. ; 62:1, s. 1-20
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Activity-based Flexible Offices (A-FOs) are offices with unassigned desks that provide a variety of workspaces. This paper presents desk-sharing and speech rules identified in A-FOs in four Swedish organisations, the emergence of and compliance with these rules, and their consequences for work conditions. Data collection involved 105 semi-structured interviews, document analyses, and observations. The identified rules were: (1) to remove belongings, (2) temporal restrictions on using the same workstations, (3) temporal restrictions on using scarce zones, (4) restrictions on verbal interactions, and (5) restrictions on phone conversations. The cases with extensive user involvement in their planning process had explicit unambiguous rules. A better compliance with rules occurred when (i) the employees were well-prepared and had a unified understanding regarding how and why to follow the rules, (ii) the rules were explicitly communicated and were regarded as easy to follow, and (iii) following the rules facilitated work and improved work conditions.

  • Digital Marketing Strategy : B2B and Stakeholders Communication
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Since digital media entered the business domain, many different tools and platforms have transformed the nature of business communications. This transformation has not been easy, since the journey has been accompanied by challenges from the marketers’ side against the adoption of the new platforms into the firm’s communication channels. Business to business marketers have also been engaged in such challenges by maintaining a slow adoption, which has motivated the researchers to study the adoption of different means and tools of digital communication in a business context.Through this research, I contribute by exploring the adoption strategies of digital platforms in the B2B supply chain including B2B firms, retailers and end users. By digital media, I mainly refer to social media and beacon technology. First, I begin this thesis by identifying the adoption and integration strategies of social media and digital marketing into traditional marketing channels in a B2B context. In this part, I identify the B2B firms’ target audience and propose a model facilitating a B2B firm’s practical social media adoption strategies.Second, to explore the benefits of different social media content sharing approaches derived from information accessibility resulted in the prior study of this thesis, I introduce and examine Public and Gated-Content sharing approaches. Thereafter, assisted by Social Power Theory and Resource Dependence Theory, I examine the effect of Public and Gated-Content sharing approaches on the target audience’s willingness to interact with the firm. The findings of this study reveal that Gated-Content approach can help the firms build closer relationship with the target audience and engage them in a co-creation process.Third, by studying proximity marketing through the adoption of beacon technology in the retail context, I explore the current methods of usage, as well as the benefits and challenges of in-store proximity marketing adoption for content sharing purposes. I complete the thesis by presenting the different challenges of such adoption, which consist technical, human behavior, managerial perception, resource and privacy factors. Finally, I identify the need to integrate the physical aspect of place and location back again into the online digital communication channels within a retail context.

  • Towards Digital Environmental Stewardship : the Work of Caring for the Environment in Waste Management
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems - Proceedings. - New York, NY, USA : Association for Computing Machinery. - 9781450391573 ; , s. 1-16
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This paper discusses Digital Environmental Stewardship as an analytical framework that can help HCI scholarship to understand, design, and assess sociotechnical interventions concerned with sustainable waste management practices. Drawing on environmental studies, we outline key concepts of environmental stewardship - namely actors, capacity, and motivations - to unpack how different initiatives for handling waste are organised, both through grassroots and top-down interventions, and through varying sociotechnical configurations. We use these dimensions to analyse three different cases of waste management that illustrate how actions of care for the environment are ecologically organised, and what challenges might hinder them beyond -or besides- behavioural motivations. We conclude with a discussion on the orientation to action that the suggested framework provides, and its role in understanding, designing and assessing digital technologies in this domain. We argue that examining how stewardship actions fold into each other helps design sociotechnical interventions for managing waste from within a relational perspective.

  • Adoption strategies of social media in B2B firms : a multiple case study approach
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Journal of business & industrial marketing. - Bingley : Emerald Group Publishing Limited. - 0885-8624 .- 2052-1189. ; 33:5, s. 730-743
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Purpose: The purpose of this study is to clarify business-to-business (B2B) firms’ strategies of social media marketing communication. The study aims to explore the factors contributing to the formation and adoption of integration strategies and identify who the B2B firms target. Design/methodology/approach: A multiple case study approach is used to compare four multinational corporations and their practices. Face-to-face interviews with key managers, and extensive readings and observations of the firms’ websites and social media platforms have been conducted. Findings: The study results in a model, illustrating different processes of selection, adoption and integration involved in the development of social media communication strategy for B2B firms. Major factors involved in determining the platform type, and strategies used within different phases and processes are identified. Research limitations/implications: As the chosen methodology may limit generalizability, further research is encouraged to test the model within a B2B context especially within small and medium enterprises as only large multinational corporations were investigated in this study. Practical implications: The paper provides insight into how B2B marketers can align social media with their firms’ goals through the strategic selection of platforms to reach the targeted audience and communicate their message. Originality/value: The study uncovers the benefits gained by B2B firms’ through interaction with individuals on social media. This is a significant contribution as the value of such interaction was previously undefined and acted as a barrier for adopting social media in some B2B firms. © 2018, Emerald Publishing Limited.

  • The Taste of Ageing, a 26-Year Analysis of Publications in the International Journal of Wine Business Research : An Abstract
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Back to the Future. - Cham : Springer. - 9783319660226 - 9783319660233 ; , s. 341-342, s. 341-342
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This study analyses the content of the International Journal of Wine Business Research (IJWBR) and gives editors, reviewers, authors and practitioners an overview over the journal’s development over 26 years. The articles published in the journal since its inception in 1989 till 2014, inclusive, were analysed in two time frames. The first time frame covers 1989–2006 as the International Journal of Wine Marketing (IJWM), while the second time frame covers 2007–2014 as IJWBR, the new name under which the journal relaunched. All types of articles are included in the analysis with the exception of editorials, guest editorials and research notes. Five main themes are addressed: the nature of authorship, the most prolific and influential authors, characteristics of the manuscripts, regional distribution of the wine’s region-of-origin and focal markets, and the most common research themes. The content analysis of this journal sheds light on how the style of the journal has evolved since its inception in 1989 onto the second time frame. The types of articles and methods used have been consistent in the early issues (1989–2006). However, since 2007 the journal has welcomed more academic and quantitative articles. The change motivated new authors to write longer articles, collaborate more and use more references, tables and figures. As a result, the journal’s impact has increased significantly. In addition, empirical studies published in the journal indicated an increase in the publications covering the Americas as both regions of origin and focal markets, as compared to other regions. This is the first time a content analysis has been carried out for IJWBR. The objective is to help authors identifying new and interesting research areas as well as to give editors and reviewers insight into the style and areas explored since the journal’s inception. By using software tools for data collection and analysis, the study is bound to the limitations inherent from these tools.

  • Travel information services and travel planning practice : Changing the horizon of assistance
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Sustainable Transportation. - 1556-8318 .- 1556-8334.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Recent decades have seen rapid growth in ICT services relating to transportation. Different types of travel information services have been proposed as a means to decrease the environmental impacts of transportation through behavioural change. However, empirical evidence shows that travel planning is a fragmented, distributed and fluid process that is not as enclosed in time and space or delimited in content, as existing ICT services for travel planning would imply, despite smart and mobile solutions. This paper examines the role of planning and coordination in the travel choices of everyday life and the time horizons and decisions that are part of current travel planning services. It also considers how travel information services of tomorrow, linked with other ICT services, could be designed to stretch the horizon of assistance, in order to better support travel planning processes in everyday life. Finally, it critically discusses the role of travel information services and ICT in the work of achieving more sustainable mobility.

  • Soft Skills Demand and Supply Through the Lens of Higher Education Students
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Vol. 22 No. 1 (2023): Proceedings of the 22nd European Conference on e-Learning - ECEL 2023. - Reading, UK : Academic Conferences International (ACI). - 2048-8645 .- 2048-8637. - 9781914587917 - 9781914587900
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Soft skills are becoming equally crucial as hard skills in today's labour market. In contrast to hard skills which are teachable typically through formal education, soft skills are non-technical and interpersonal, allowing individuals to be able to find and succeed in their studies, jobs, and professional life. Despite the increasing emphasis on soft skills, many university students are either unaware of or neglect enhancing them. Soft skills deficiency among university students has become a significant concern for employers, educators, and policymakers, as it negatively affects students' academic performance and future employment prospects. The purpose of this study is to investigate students’ perceptions of the demand for soft skills and the possibility and availability of learning opportunities. The expected outcomes intend to provide insights about awareness of soft skills among students and pathways to reduce the soft skills gap through training provisions in higher education settings. Furthermore, it aims to find out how the young generation (mainly Generation Z) would perceive digitalisation and specifically gamification as a solution to facilitate soft skills training. This is a mixed method study, in which, an open survey was the data collection media. The survey was conducted during the spring semester of 2023 and analysed using visualisation and summarisation methods. Based on the outcome of 66 master’s and bachelor's students attending the digitalisation courses in two classes in Sweden, over 50% of the students perceived a lack of soft skills in their curricula. They were also positive toward the use of gamification as an effective digital strategy, recognising it as a powerful tool to facilitate training and developing soft skills as a part of formal learning in higher education. As a suggested approach, gamifying soft skills training potentially creates simulations that mimic real-world situations to allow students to practice and develop their soft skills in a safe and low-stakes training environment. This facilitates training soft skills for better communication and collaboration during their academic journey and after their graduation and to prepare students for successful careers.
