The paper engages in an in-depth discussion of the search engine Google, focusing on its relationship to webmasters and users. Attempts by webmasters to game the ranking system in order to boost the position of their websites are met by Google with a subtle combination of rewards and punishment. It is argued that this strategy involves the establishment of a disciplinary regime that enforces a certain norm for web publishing. Google’s relationship to the users, on the other hand, is characterized by less invasive forms of power. By inserting itself deeply into the users’ information environment, Google can collect and analyze unprecedented amounts of user data. It is argued that the modeling of segmented consumption behavior that these schemes are based upon involves a governmental form of power. It is a kind of power that aims at controlling differential behavior patterns by gaining an intimate statistical knowledge of a population and using this knowledge as a means of predictive risk management.

This chapter outlines the architectural approach to researching digital politics. An architectural approach focuses on platform structures and how they mediate, and can actively affect, users’ political agency online and offline. I first chart the lineage of architectural approaches in the social sciences, from discourse architectures to digital architectures. Then, I describe the process of ‘mapping,’ which theorizes how the functions of social media are built into empirically observable elements of platform design. To illustrate this mapping process, I present four functions of social media and map them onto various features of mainstream social media platforms. The purpose is to show how platform design features can have concrete implications for political processes. Here, the political process under examination is citizens’ political participation. Ultimately, my intent with this chapter is argue against the use of conceptually vague concepts like affordances by providing an alternative and less ambiguous concept – namely, digital architectures.

This chapter investigates how social media platforms tailored for research can help entrepreneurship researchers in their data collection and analysis efforts. The widespread use in society of social media platforms, accessed through people’s smartphones, tablets and computers, represents a new opportunity for social scientists to collect both big and thick digital data. Most social media platforms are however designed for commercial purposes, restricting the research questions that can be meaningfully explored to a minimum. The aim of this chapter is therefore to explore a novel approach labeled “scientific social media” (SSM). A case study method is applied where an SSM platform called LoopMe is described in-depth and compared to similar phenomena. Generalizations from this case then lead up to an attempt to answer the question: Can SSM platforms offer disruptive benefits to entrepreneurship researchers, such as radically increased efficiency or new-to-the-world features? Some identified benefits of SSM include ability to combine key strengths of established research methods and ontologies, ability to triangulate in new ways and ability to conduct very cost-efficient longitudinal studies.

Extant literature suggests that market disruptions take place because of two main reasons: technological disruption or institutional change. In view of these two alternative explanations, this paper aims to explore how the recent rise of the collaborative consumption platform Uber is perceived by consumers and whether this platform is primarily regarded as a technological innovation or as an insti-tutional disruption. Drawing from a dataset of more than 6500 user-generated contents in social media, our findings suggest that Uber is not primarily per¬ceived as a technological innovation, but rather as an institutional disruption.

This chapter discusses the challenges and opportunities of digital transformation from the perspective of three organizations based on continuous interview and observation data gathered between late 2018 and the end of 2020. The purpose of such a discussion is to understand the importance of spatial co-existence and the significance of spatiality for meaningful organizational interaction. In other words—what happens to organizational members and the constitution, preservation and development of organizations, when the activity of “work” becomes detached from space? Of course, space or location matters more for some than others. For a telemarketer, space might be entirely insignificant, while for the priest and church-goer or the actor and theater-goer, the act of “going” somewhere to experience something is as important as what happens at the location, making the church and stage places that in themselves carry significance. This importance is represented in how churches and theater buildings often are majestic architectural achievements similar to other institutions of cultural, societal or financial importance that are housed in impressive locations such as banks, governments, court houses and universities.To discuss these questions, we draw on theories and perspectives of the communicative constitution of organizations (CCO) (e.g., Brummans et. al., 2014; Cooren, 2006; Putnam & Nicotera, 2009; Schoeneborn et al., 2018; Taylor & Van Every, 2000), and present a Sweden-based multisite case study (Ekström et al., 2021) of digital transformation consisting of three organizations whose common trait is that their core activities have historically speaking been dependent on either a physical location, physical spaces or face-to-face meetings. The three organizations in question are a major European financial institute, a church organization and a city theater—all institutions of traditional architectural and societal importance. As our relationship with these organizations deepened over the course of the pandemic, it allowed us as researchers to glimpse how digitalization has affected each one over time, and how each organization’s perspective of the challenges and opportunities of digitalization shifted and evolved before and throughout the pandemic.
