  • "Being stuck between two worlds": Identity configurations of occupational and family identities.
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Identity. An International Journal of Theory and Research. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1528-3488 .- 1532-706X. ; 19:4, s. 330-446
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Most research on identity has focused on either identity processes or identity content, neglecting how individuals structure their identities. We investigated how individuals negotiated their sometimes conflicting multiple identifications of work and family into different types of workable identity configurations. We also examined differences across configurations in the gender distribution, degree of conflict, and life satisfaction. Through a mixed methods approach, a community sample of 124 young Swedish adults (50% women, Mage 33.29 years) were interviewed about work and family priorities and completed a rating scale measure of life satisfaction. The qualitative analyses showed six different types of identity configurations, the most common being Family first, followed by Everything is important, Struggling to prioritize, Now family comes first, Inability to prioritize, and Work first. The quantitative analyses showed few gender differences across configurations, but there were differences in conflict and life satisfaction between configurations. The findings from this study reflect the complex and dynamic ways identity is structured within a cultural context.

  • How social networks influence young men to seek psychological help
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Nordic Psychology. - : Informa UK Limited. - 1901-2276 .- 1904-0016. ; 73:2, s. 153-174
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • There is a growing body of literature that recognizes young men’s reluctance to seek psychological help. However, how young men perceive the role of their social networks in their decision to seek help has received limited attention in research. Using thematic analysis, this study investigated 30 young men’s description of how members from three categories of their social networks: partner, family and friends have influenced them to seek psychological help and how they have experienced this influence. The results show that certain themes recur between various members of men's social networks while others were unique to roles in the social network. How this information can be used to make it easier for young men to seek psychological help is discussed. © 2020 The Editors of Nordic Psychology.

  • Life after childhood bullying: Body image development and disordered eating in adulthood
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Behavioral Development. - : SAGE Publications. - 0165-0254 .- 1464-0651. ; 44:3, s. 246-255
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Studies have demonstrated that being bullied in childhood may have long-term associations with lower psychological well-being in adulthood. However, although bullying incidents frequently target the victim’s body and appearance, research has overlooked studying victims’ long-term body image development and risk of engaging in disordered eating later in life. This 14-year longitudinal research project examined childhood bullying in relation to body image development and disordered eating in emerging adulthood. Growth curve analyses of participants’ body image at ages 10–21 years (N = 960) revealed that more victimized children experienced more body dissatisfaction at baseline and maintained their negative body image throughout adolescence and into adulthood. Mediation analyses showed that childhood bullying (age 10 years) predicted more negative body image in adolescence (age 18 years), which in turn predicted more disordered eating in adulthood (age 24 years). The indirect effect was stronger for girls than for boys. The findings suggest that bullied children are likely to face both more body image problems and disordered eating as they evolve through adolescence and into adulthood, indicating the need for early and effective interventions. Incorporating components known to promote a more positive body image could be a valuable feature of future interventions. Thus, as children and adolescents are taught to cope with bullying situations, they could also be helped to deal with the appearance culture that permeates many of these situations.

  • On being victimized by peers in the advent of adolescence: Prospective relationships to objectified body consciousness
  • 2011
  • Ingår i: Body Image. - : Elsevier BV. - 1740-1445. ; 8, s. 309-314
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Previous research indicates that peer victimization is tied to children's negative appearance evaluations. The current study examines whether early peer victimization is also prospectively related to objectified body consciousness. Six-hundred-and-two Swedish boys and girls answered questionnaires at age 10, and again at age 18. Main findings showed that being the target of peer victimization at age 10 was related to more habitual appearance monitoring and body shame at age 18. Gender moderated the relations between victimization and body shame, with victimized girls experiencing stronger body shame than victimized boys. Additionally, whereas boys experienced less body shame than girls, they were equally likely to monitor their appearance. In sum, this study provides preliminary support to the notion that peer victimization is involved in the processes by which young adolescents' self-objectify. Future studies are warranted to further validate these findings. © 2011 Elsevier Ltd.

  • Cyberbullying and Body Dissatisfaction in Swedish Children and Adolescents
  • 2012
  • Ingår i: International Conference on Cyberbullying: COST IS0801, 28-30 June, Sorbonne, Paris.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Research indicates that several adverse consequences are associated with being a victim of cyberbullying such as: depressive symptoms, negative feelings, fear and a sense of helplessness (Perren, Dooley, and Shaw, 2010; Spears, Slee, Owens, & Johnson, 2009). The aim of this study was to understand more about another possible consequence of cyberbullying: body dissatisfaction. As far as we know, no other studies have examined whether cyberbullying is related to body dissatisfaction. However, previous research suggests that exposure to appearance-related teasing and conventional bullying is related to children’s body dissatisfaction (Lunde, Frisén & Hwang, 2006). Purpose: The aim of this study was to investigate whether being a victim of cyberbullying is related to body dissatisfaction. Additionally, we examine the prevalence of cyberbullying directed at the victims’ appearance amongst Swedish pupils, aged 10, 12 and 15 years. Methods: In total, 1149 pupils, 10, 12 and 15 years old, were surveyed in Gothenburg, Sweden. The Body Esteem Scale for Adolescents and Adults (BESAA) was used to measure body dissatisfaction (Mendelson, Mendelson, & White, 2001). The questionnaire used to measure cyberbullying was based and developed from previous research on cyberbullying (Slonje & Smith, 2008). Results: Pupils aged 12 and 15 years old perceived that it is very frequent that cyberbullying is directed at the victims’ appearance. As many as 95% of the 15 year olds perceived that appearance is a common target especially when girls cyberbully girls. Results also showed that pupils often are victims of cyberbullying directed at appearance and that this increases with age (12% of 10 year old pupils, 13% of 12 year old pupils and 21% of 15 year old pupils). Finally, we found that those who were victims of cyberbullying, in all three age-groups, suffered from more body dissatisfaction. Conclusions: The results of this study indicate the need for further research that examines the relationship between cyberbullying and body dissatisfaction.
