  • Evaluating the effectiveness of an armoured brigade staff
  • 2014
  • In: Assessing command and control effectiveness. - London : Ashgate. - 9781472436948 ; , s. 141-160
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • The purpose with this chapter is to present a study of the effectiveness of an Armoured Brigade Headquarters (HQ) in some specific respects. Important issues were (1) how is the HQ Staff dimensioned in relation to its tasks, (2) how does the three staff processes work (Planning, Execution and Coordination / Decision) and (3) how well does the HQ’s Standard Operating Procedure (SOP) and Battle Rhythm  function in the light of the HQ’s organization and work processes? The study was designed as a survey study and was based on the following four instruments: (1) Military Command Team Effectiveness Instrument (CTEF 2.0; Essence, Vogelaar, Baranski, Berggren, Van Buskirk, Goodwin & Myller, 2008); (2) Measurement of workload according to the Borg scale (Borg, 1998); (3) Subjective assessments of quality of the Brigade HQ’s orders and reports, and (4) verification that the Brigade HQ followed it’s Standard Operating Procedure. Fifty-four staff members of an Armoured Brigade HQ volunteered as participants. In the study, the HQ was challenged with a peace support / peace keeping operation exercise. The overall result regarding the CTEF and quality measurements on orders and reports indicate that the HQ worked well during the entire exercise and that the SOP and Battle Rhythm worked rather well. However, through the CTEF, four problem areas were identified. These areas regarded (1) the level of uncertainty in the mission, (2) the high complexity of the task, (3) the perceived instability of the objectives that were supposed to be attained in the mission environment, and (4) a high level of workload in some staff sections. Three of these areas are not under the control of the Brigade HQ (high level of uncertainty, high task complexity and unstable objectives of the operation). However, the fourth area, workload, could be influenced. Some staff sections seem to be undermanned in the current organization and that problem needs to be handled, by increasing some staff sections or by moving some duties to other sections.

  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • One critical situation when a driver needs to have a high degree of awareness, to avoid critical situations or crashes, is when passing a school bus, stopped for boarding or de-boarding of children. With the help of an experiment in VTI’s moving base driving simulator, a scenario, using in-vehicle information before the bus was reached, was tested. The aim was to enhance drivers’ perception, in order to reduce the speed of vehicles passing by the stopped bus. Both alert and sleep deprived drivers were tested. The results showed a significant speed reduction thanks to the information given beforehand. Sleep deprivation did not seem to have an impact on speed reduction. This suggests that the warning signals are seen and followed, regardless the drivers’ state of alertness. Thus, it seems likely that this type of information may be useful as an Intelligent Transport System (ITS), to provide driver support about upcoming hazards. One step towards further research in this direction is performed within the EU project SAFEWAY2SCHOOL, the main objectives of which are presented at the end of this chapter.

  • Sensational driving : instructing and calibrating sensory perception in early driver training
  • 2020
  • In: Discursive psychology and embodiment. - Cham : Palgrave Macmillan. - 9783030537081 - 9783030537098 ; , s. 169-196
  • Book chapter (peer-reviewed)abstract
    • Although psychological states have been widely examined as social objects indiscursive psychology (DP), little is known about the interactional organisationof perception. This chapter is about joint sensorial activities in driver training.Specifically, we explore how neophyte drivers are being trained in identifyingand analysing kinetic information—including the car’s vibration, movementand direction—when performing routine car control operations. Throughmultimodal conversation analysis of four video-recorded examples, wedemonstrate how driving instructors gesturally enact sensations to invite theirstudents to “feel” the car’s kinetic status, how they jointly produce coordinatedsensory activities and how the sensoriality of the event is intersubjectivelyestablished through “feel enquiries”. Treating sensory perception asembedded—and embodied—in practical social activity, highlights the benefitsof including corporeality in future DP enquiry.

  • Internet-delivered cognitive behaviour therapy (ICBT) for older adults with anxiety and depression
  • 2016
  • In: Guided internet-based treatments in psychiatry. - Cham : Springer International Publishing. - 9783319060828 ; , s. 219-234
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • Anxiety and depression are prevalent among older adults and are associated increased disability, reduced quality of life and poorer physical health. Effective psychological treatments such as cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT) are known to be effective and acceptable for older adults. However, as with younger adults, research indicates relatively few older adults access these treatments in their traditional face-to-face format. However, highlighting the potential of newer internet-delivered CBT (ICBT) approaches for increasing access to treatment, a large proportion of older adults are online and the overall proportion online is only likely to grow over time. Several clinical trials have now been conducted examining ICBT for older adults and the nature and finding of these emerging studies are reviewed in this chapter. Future directions for research focused in this area are also discussed.

  • Cognitive behavioural therapy in performance enhancement : using exposure and behavioral experiments with elite athletes
  • 2020
  • In: Applied sport, exercise, and performance psychology. - London : Routledge. - 9781138587854 ; , s. 113-128
  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
    • In sport psychology, the roots of mental skills training and performance enhancement strategies have been heavily influenced by the cognitive branch of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy. Some of the traditional methods in CBT, such as exposure and behavioural experiments, have not gained much attention despite strong research evidence of their effectiveness. This chapter will describe how exposure and behavioural experiments can be useful in working with performance enhancement in Olympic level athletes. Common procedures are outlined and lessons learned from the elite sport context are provided.

  • Book chapter (other academic/artistic)abstract
Barn i risiko? Kartlegging og diagnostisering? Tiltak og behandling
