  • Researching police behaviour and perceptions using online survey methodology: On suspects of crimes
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: SAGE Research Methods Cases. - London : SAGE Ltd.
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Survey methodology is a cost-effective and scientifically valid way of collecting data in the social sciences, and is widely accessible through online platforms. Creating and conducting an online survey may appear straightforward; however, there are areas within constructing a survey that warrant attention. For example, for a more engaging use of surveys and to obtain accurate responses, online surveys need to adapt to the capacity of the human mind (e.g., attention and memory). The general focus of the present case study will be on how to design, construct, and carry out online surveys with a sound methodology, ensuring a high quality of research findings and publications in peer-reviewied journals. Every methodological tool contains pros and cons and online survey is no exception. This case study will take an in-depth focus on important choices in survey studies concerning research philosophy and methodological approach, cognitive aspects of survey methodology, questionnaire items, response formats, software programs, recruitment of participants, and data collection. Specific examples will be drawn from a recent online police study in the field of legal psychology. Therefore, the purpose of this case study is to equip postgraduate students and junior researchers with the right tools to be able to conduct their own online surveys in the field of social science.

  • Death, ideology, and worldview : Evidence of death anxiety but not mortality salience effects on political ideology and worldview
  • 2022
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Research has suggested that the sense of threat aroused by reminders of death can lead to worldview defense and elevated conservatism. The current studies disentangled the effects of mortality salience and death anxiety on two core components of conservatism—resistance to change and acceptance of inequality—and on the broader worldviews of normativism and humanism among Swedish adults. Study 1 (N = 186), which used a mortality salience manipulation, and Study 2 (N = 354), which measured self-reported death anxiety, suggested that existential threat was most consistently associated with resistance to change and normativism, consistent with theoretical expectations. This was true predominantly among left-wingers. However, existential threat was not significantly more strongly associated with resistance to change and normativism than with acceptance of inequality and (low) humanism respectively, contrary to the hypotheses. Furthermore, Study 3, which was a pre-registered online replication of Study 1 with respondents from the United Kingdom, yielded no evidence for any effects of mortality salience on ideology (N = 319) or worldview (N = 199). An internal pre-registered meta-analysis of mortality salience effects indicated that mortality salience had a marginally significant effect only on normativism. Taken together, the results provided little clear evidence of mortality salience effects on ideological preferences and worldviews, but dispositional death anxiety was associated with resistance to change, normativism, and acceptance of inequality particularly among leftists.

  • Subjective Factors Influencing Individual's Response to a New Public Transport Service
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The timing and nature of people’s responses can be expected to vary when a new element enter their environment. For example, when an individual is provided with a new or modified transport service. This time-scale of behavioural responses will affect the patronage of, and short- and long-term demands on the new service over time. Understanding the underlying factors that influence an individual’s response over time to a new or modified transport service would enable us to identify trigger factors that make the new service attractive from an individual’s point of view. Chatterjee (2001) and Douglas (2003) argued that motives other than instrumental factors related to public transport use, such as attitudes, awareness, travel habits and learning processes, can influence individual responses over time to changes in the travel environment. Unfortunately, despite their importance, there have been few studies that examined this argument empirically. To address this research gap, this paper aims to investigate the influences of subjective factors on individuals’ responses to the introduction of a modified public transport (PT) service over time by proposing and testing an alternative model that modifies the theory of planned behaviour (TPB) model framework. This paper also aims to investigate the behavioural change in terms of attitudes and perceptions on individuals’ resources and constraints in using a modified PT service over time after its introduction. The case study involves the new extension of a tram line connecting the suburbs of Alvik and Solna Centrum in Stockholm, Sweden. Four waves of a panel survey were conducted with 96 individuals who lived along the new service, from just before the new service was introduced and until seven months after its introduction. A structural equation modelling technique was used to estimate the relationships between behavioural constructs and panel data, then incorporate them into a discrete choice model. The results show that intention influences individual’s quick-response choice. The panel analysis shows that past behaviour in using the new service influenced current behaviour, and that perceived walking distance in using the service consistently influenced the frequency of using the new service over time.

  • MeBeSafe Newsletter January 2020
  • 2020
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The MeBeSafe project is entering its final year. The project aims to make traffic safer by soft measures, such as nudging and coaching. The newsletter describes the latest advancements in the project, including building the nudges in real life and testing on large amounts of people.

  • MeBeSafe Newsletter June 2019
  • 2019
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • MeBeSafe is trying to make traffic safer by nudging and coaching. Nudging is a way of predictably altering people's behaviour on a subconscious level; without forbidding anything. A classic example of a nudge is to put the vegetarian option on top of a menu, which will make people much more likely to choose that one. MeBeSafe is using nudging to change people's behaviour on the roads, both for car drivers, cyclists and truckers. This newsletter describes the various efforts made by MeBeSafe and the latest breakthroughs in nudging. It also includes a summary of what nudging actually is.

  • MeBeSafe Newsletter June 2020
  • 2020
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The MeBeSafe project aims to make traffic safer by nudging and coaching measures. The penultimate newsletter decribes the various measures researched and how they work. This includes how to do interviews with people just passing by on the road, what really constitutes "good" driving, how truck drivers can help coach one another, how to nudge large amounts of cyclists. It also includes passages on nudging with privacy and how to use a nudge to merge traffic together.

  • Ergonomic Value Stream Mapping (ErgoVSM). Tool and User Guide.
  • 2016
  • Ingår i: Nordic Council of Ministers, ANP 2016:731. - : Nordic Council of Ministers. ; :APN 2016:731
  • Annan publikation (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Recent years Lean Production (”Lean”) has become a prevalent rationalization strategy in healthcare to create more efficient value streams. Research shows that this often results in impaired Ergonomics, i.e. impaired work content and physical work load (“physical ergonomics”). A common Lean tool used to rationalize value streams in healthcare is Value Stream Mapping (VSM). An ergonomic “add-in module” Ergonomic Value Stream Mapping (ErgoVSM) – has therefore been developed to be used as an integrated part of VSM in the analysis of value streams in healthcare. ErgoVSM as well as VSM are participative tools. All occupational groups performing tasks directly related to the investigated value stream should be represented when using the tool. This Guide includes description of methods and assessment templates for physical ergonomics and work content. An initial version of ErgoVSM for manufacturing industry was developed in Sweden. Later, this was further developed for the health-care sector. This tool was then evaluated in a Nordic Multicenter Study by national projects in Sweden, Denmark and Iceland. The Nordic evaluation showed that using the ErgoVSM tool may result in more focus on ergonomics in the Action Plans compared to just using VSM. This is obtained without jeopardizing performance aspects. Based on the field experiences from the Nordic Multicentre Study I, the ErgoVSM tool was further developed, resulting in this present English version.
