Under urban mask: On rural landscapes with different logics

- As a result of natural hazards, ecological disasters, lawlessness, wars and fluctuations in economy, numerous European landscapes slowly but surely lose their ‘raison d’être’. The consequence of this is a continuous process of degradation, both in respect to infrastructure as well as the social fabric. Effectively, the changes that occur create specific landscapes that encompass elements, which, at a first glance, could be considered both urban and rural. However, these are prone to mechanisms other than the progressive blurring of the rural-urban dichotomy brought on by urbanization; they are subject to a different kind of rationale. Are they just dissonant nests of desolation or merely slumbering resources for future creative uses? How do we view them? How should we handle them? To the fore of this special session we bring analyses of rural landscapes endowed with specific urban traits whose common denominator is their dysfunctional character. The main task of this special session is to unravel the logics of these particular landscapes by means of: (1) Cognition of the factors and mechanisms that contributed to their emergence; (2) Analyses of the processes that take place in them in order to: (a) determine their course and dynamics, (b) establish potential directions of change; (c) propose methodological solutions – how to do research; (3) Generalization of the research results in search of common problems and similarities in order to: (a) formulate universal methodological assumptions, (b) marshal solutions that are useful in decision-making on administrative and institutional levels. The session has attracted 10 presentations addressing any of these issues in the context of dysfunctional rural landscapes with interesting perspectives and innovative approaches. The spectrum of this double session included: post-war rural areas in Amsterdam (J.E. Abrahamse), Zagreb’s peri-urban fringe (A. Toskić, D. Njegač & D. Orešić), rural transformation from urban influences in Olsztyn (M. Wasilewicz-Pszczółkowska, A. Szczepańska & A. Senetra), degraded urban agglomerations in Poland (R. Krzysztofik, I. Kantor-Pietraga & T. Spórna), landscapes transcending rural-urban characteristics in Gothenburg (M. Dymitrow, R. Brauer, G. Holmertz, B. Apostolovska-Toševska, F. Holmberg & L. Johansson), landscape discriminants in valorization of rural areas in Poland (A. Bocheńska-Skałecka, Z. Kuriata, I. Niedźwiecka-Filipiak, A. Podolska & L. Serafin), degraded towns in Silesia (R. Szmytkie), agri-ghettos in central Poland (J. Biegańska, E. Grzelak-Kostulska & M. Dymitrow), Bucharest's Romani ghetto (D. Teodorescu) and urban agriculture in socially deprived areas of Thessaloniki (E. Gavriilidou, D. Dedousi, E. Oureilidou & M. Ritou).

Proceedings for the International Congress on Coastal and Marine Tourism (CMT2017) - June 13-16 2017 in Gothenburg, Sweden

- Welcome to CMT2017! Last time many of us were gathered was in 2015 at the 25-year anniversary of CMT, which took place on the Big Island of Hawai'i. Three of the members in the CMT2017 Organizing Team participated at this event for the first time and found it to be both intellectually and socially stimulating and with a great potential to anchor the topic of coastal and marine tourism within in Sweden. Already during CMT2015, we were therefore discussing amongst ourselves that we would like to bring the CMT network to Sweden and the University of Gothenburg. In spring 2016, we took action and made a bid to become the 9th International Congress on Coastal and Marine Tourism and were glad to receive a positive response from the International Coastal and Marine Tourism Society (ICMTS), where the congress has its roots. And so, here we are, one year after, ready to launch CMT2017! An interesting thing to observe this year is that, although it has been less than 2 years after the previous CMT, we can at CMT2017 conclude that the interest in coastal and marine tourism is large and steadily growing. We have received a little more than 100 abstracts, of which 76 will be presented at CMT2017. We have also managed to invite and accommodate friends from around the globe, representing 29 countries and all continents (aside from the Antarctic). We are very proud of this, as it emphasizes the true diversity of the congress and the topic of coastal and marine tourism in general. Furthermore, many of the received abstracts have inter- or cross-disciplinary content. This shows that our field of study has many dimensions and important cultural, social, economic and environmental impacts on the world we all share and must protect as best we can. In terms of the congress program, we have kept most of the session themes from Hawai’i, which we found to be relevant and covering the broad study field of coastal and marine tourism. The main theme of the congress is ”Global challenges, local solutions” – a theme which we find increasingly important as current topics and discourses on coastal and marine tourism contexts often are global in nature, in particular in connection to the aims of sustainable development. At the same time, planning, strategy, innovation and development are usually grounded in local coastal and marine contexts. This is a challenge in itself, but might also be an opportunity if the local is connected to the global. The congress theme is reflected in the proposed panel sessions on Innovation, Development in the global south and the Tourism-Recreation relationship. The congress sessions and keynotes also connect to this theme. On this background, we have tried to make an exciting congress program for you. We encourage you to listen, explore and experience as much as possible during your days here in Sweden. It is an honor to welcome you all!

- Nonhuman animals are ubiquitous to our `human' societies. Interdisciplinary human/animal research has - for 50 years - drawn attention to how animals are ever-present in what we think of as human spaces and cultures. Our societies are built with animals and through all kinds of multispecies interactions. From public spaces and laboratories to homes, farms and in the `wilderness'; human and nonhuman animals meet to make space and place together, through webs of power relations. However, the very spaces of these interactions are not mute or passive themselves. The spaces where species meet matter, and shape human/animal relations. This book takes as its starting point the relationship between place and human/animal interaction. It brings together the work of leading scholars in human/animal studies, from a variety of disciplinary and interdisciplinary backgrounds. With a distinct focus on place, physical space and biocultural geography, the authors of this volume consider the ways in which space, human and nonhuman animals co-constitute each other, how they make spaces together, produce meaning around them, struggle over access, how these places are storied and how stories of spaces matter. Presenting studies thematically and including a variety of nonhuman creatures in a range of settings, this book delivers new understandings of the importance of nonhuman animals to understandings of place - and the role of places in shaping our interactions with nonhuman creatures. As pets, as laboratory animals, as exhibits, as parasites, as livestock, as quarry, as victims of disaster or objects of folklore, this book offers insights into human/animal intermingling at locales and settings of great relevance to many areas of research, including geography, sociology, science and technology studies, gender studies, history and anthropology. This book meets the evolving interest in human/animal interaction, anthrozoology, and the environmental humanities in relation to the research on space and place that currently informs the humanities and the social sciences.

Small town Africa : studies in rural-urban interaction

- Small towns have often been considered as unimportant or even as anomalous phenomena and consequently have been largely ignored by policy makers and researchers. Instead, attention was focussed on the large city or on rural development and agricultural change without consideration being given to the positive contribution that small towns can make to rural transformation.But for the overwhelming majority of Africa's population which is rural, it is the small town with which they have the most frequent and intense contacts and which provides the foci for economic, social, political and cultural rural-urban interaction. The papers in this book address a wide range of issues relating to the small town in rural context from both the macro perspective, including the role of the state, to the micro perspective where attention is given to the vitality and adaptability of individual actors through their utilisation of rural and urban opportunities. Case studies are drawn from Botswana, Ethiopia, Kenya, Mali, Nigeria, Somalia, Sudan, Zambia and Zimbabwe.
