  • Genusstrukturer och lokala välfärdsmodeller : Fyra kommuner möter omvandlingen av den offentliga sektorn
  • 2000
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • The overall purpose of this thesis is to analyse recent changes in the preconditions for theproduction of public services and their impact upon, specifically, women's jobopportunities in local labour markets. The effects of these changes on the largest segmentof women's labour market, i. e. that of the municipal public sector, have been analysed forthe first half of the 1990's in four municipalities in Sweden: Botkyrka, Gnosjö, Kalmar andPajala. Special emphasis has been put on local variations regarding the development ofemployment opportunities in the sector and the degree of reorganization within it. One ofthe hypotheses in the thesis is that, as a consequence of deregulation and decentralizationof public services in the 1990's, it no longer is possible to speak of one single welfare modelbut instead of different local welfare models. Secondly, an attempt to explain theconnection between the welfare state and women's labour market is made usingHirdman's concept "gender contracts". The decentralization of public services implies thatit is absolutely necessary to adopt a local perspective in studies of the form and contents ofgender contracts, because negotiations with respect to the division of labour increasinglyare enacted between women, men and the local government. A third aim, therefore, is totry to explain the effects of ongoing restructuring in terms of the connection between localwelfare models and local gander contracts. Regarding the "bargaining position" of womenvis-à-vis the local government, the four case studies show that the local conditions forwomen are rather disparate. In Botkyrka, the new organizational ideas were introduced ina very determined way, whereas Kalmar chose a cautious approach, with less far-reachingorganizational changes. In Pajala, much of the new ideology was adopted, although localconditions severely restricted its implementation, and in Gnosjö a basic policy was not tosubject core local sector activities to competition. The study shows, very clearly, that thestrategies adopted by local governments to meet changing conditions and economicproblems strongly affect women's labour market.

  • Like a wave : Understanding the film and TV industries in Korea and Sweden
  • 2016
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This doctoral dissertation is concerned with the complex dynamics of knowledge in the South Korean film and TV industry and Swedish filmmaking from a spatiotemporal perspective. The film and TV industries are highly dependent on knowledge and innovation. Production in the film and TV industries usually takes place in the form of projects in which creative professionals form teams for a limited time period to complete creative tasks. Moreover, the film and TV industries are facing rapid and constant changes to work practices, technology, markets and demand. Therefore, the dynamics of knowledge and interactive learning can be an important source of competitive advantages and project success in the film and TV industries. The aim of this thesis is to enhance understanding of knowledge creation and diffusion processes, relationships with institutional settings and the systematic character of business in the film and TV industries. The focus of this thesis is on the production value chain in which many independent production firms are active. It is argued that 1) the film and TV industries and their institutional environments co-evolve; and 2) project-specific knowledge sourcing takes places through local-extra local linkages. The case of the Korean film and TV industry indicates that its evolution strongly depends on the setting of the respective institutions and regulations, and on the institutional environments. In addition, it is argued that diverse actors, factors and sectors are involved in the emergence and development of the Korean film and TV industry. The Swedish filmmaking case study examines production processes and ecologies and argues that production managers are the key players in them, and their roles – investigator, bridge builder and gatekeeper – in knowledge creation and diffusion processes are central to this part of the production of film and TV. Exploring two case studies with a focus on the key (f)actors of knowledge creation and diffusion processes has resulted in the view that knowledge-based competencies can be an important source of competitive advantage and project success in high-velocity environments.

  • Creative Distraction : The Digital Transformation of the Advertising Industry
  • 2009
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis is primarily based on a case study on how the Internet affects the advertising industry in Oslo, Norway, and on how the digitization of advertising adds to our understanding of the geography of innovation and urban and regional development. The study argues that the Internet fundamentally changes and challenges the advertising industry, and that advertising merges into market communication and even user experience and product development. The interactive nature of the Internet and its parallel social and commercial worlds contribute to transcend the role of a traditional medium and to coalescence between production and consumption. Despite the fact that those involved in online and traditional advertising are located close to each other in Oslo, the extent of collective learning, knowledge externalities and innovation has been scarce. The study shows that the creative destruction of this industrial sector is ignited by actors outside the traditional advertising industry. Due to path dependency along one-way mass communication media incumbents within the advertising industry have left room for new actors, such as web agencies and technology consultants, to explore and take market share in online market communication services. The reconfiguration of market communication is regarded as the result of an industry mutation across advertising and ICT, and creates a need for bridging skills and competencies across creative, strategic and interactive domains. The implications of such an industry mutation across diverse sectors are used to discuss the evolutionary potential of the related variety perspective. The study argues that localized industrial change may be conceptualised in terms of a cyclical relationship between externalities from localisation economies and urbanisation economies respectively. The implications of the findings from the case study are in this way used to discuss more general drivers of urban and regional development.

  • Jaget, laget, Dotterbolaget : En studie av feministiskt nätverkande och rummets betydelse
  • 2019
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This research explores how entrepreneurship interacts with feministic political commitments and praxis. It shows that this interaction is intimately shaped by its spatial setting, in this case Möllevången in the city of Malmö, Sweden. For a long time, the independent comics industry in Sweden has had men in leading positions and the medium has had masculinist connotations. My thesis shows that for women and transgender persons working in such a male-dominated industry, networking and collaborating are crucial for succeeding and staying in business. The particular network studied here is Dotterbolaget, a women and transgender separatist comic’s network based in Malmö.Dotterbolaget practices a feministic approach. The thesis analyses firstly its work practices and secondly the motives animating their adoption. Avoiding competition and promoting collaboration are important factors. So too is finding a means of motivation other than monetary, such as having fun and creating a professional environment for one another. The analysis also considers the spatial setting of the network, showing the deep significance of physical place. Finally, the non-hierarchal form of the network is considered. What does it mean to work as a comic’s artist without hierarchies in an individualised society? What tensions and strengths does such an organisational form give rise to?

  • Continuity and Change : Essays on path-dependence in economic geography and good food
  • 2013
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • How can it be, that in our rapidly changing world certain things remain recognisably the same for such a long time? This dissertation is concerned with the economic geography of path-dependence and seeks to explain selected everyday examples of continuity and change. How can French restaurants and chefs be successful for decades despite changes in taste? Why are cars powered by fossil fuels still around while there are many novel and cleaner alternatives? What explains the re-invention of local food products in spite of the influx of many new products from around the world? These are the question this dissertation tries to explain as spatial expressions of ‘path-dependence’.The first paper tries to understand how expert opinion in the restaurant industry is able to define success in the long run, whereas the second paper progressively focusses down to the level of chefs and asks whether talent, popularity of experience matters more for individual chefs. Combined, these papers address the interrelation between the labels of continuity defined by experts on the one hand versus the changing behaviour of chefs trying to become superstars on the other. The third paper aims to unpack an example of labelling categories by exploring the interrelatedness of technological designs in the car-industry. The fourth and final paper also ventures into labelling as it seeks to answer the question why labels of Geographical Indications are unevenly distributed across Europe? Each paper uses quantitative methods based on everyday data, such as the Michelin guide, biographies, patent data and applications for food labels. The statistical analyses reveal that the success of restaurants is mainly built on localized continuities and proximity, while the individual success of French chefs is primarily built on developing popularity over time. The patent portfolios of car manufacturers show that conventional and hybrid technologies are more central to vehicle design, suggesting there clean alternatives are not really on the agenda. Likewise, the uneven distribution of food labels over Europe is also characterised by a strong dependence on success in the past and continuing support of national governments. The overall conclusion this dissertation draws is that spatial interaction is more important than locational characteristics. Those interactions can often span only a limited distance, meaning that gradual changes are favoured over radical changes. Path-dependence is shown to have many spatial references that are often embedded in localized contexts to such a degree that a more generic theory of path-dependence seems a long way ahead.

  • Planering och placering : Den modernistiska stadsplaneringen och restaurangnäringens geografi i Stockholm 1930–2017
  • 2018
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Inspired by the debate on the effects of large scale urban planning on the localization of small- and medium-sized businesses, this thesis focuses on the impact of modernist urban planning on the localization of restaurant outlets in Stockholm during the twentieth and early twenty-first centuries. The thesis is related to several literatures, including economic geography, urban history and to some extent the twentieth century history of the restaurant business in Sweden as well as urban food consumption. It is shown that the restaurant industry has mainly been located in urban environments characterized by an urban form, deriving from planning ideals that occurred before the advent of modernist urban planning. Furthermore, it is argued that modernist urban planning ideals has affected the restaurant industry in the younger parts of Stockholm in two directions. It helped to create conditions for cluster formation of restaurant companies around planned centers, and it contributed to the lack of cohesive urban street landscapes, for both walking consumers and consumers traveling by car. In the long run this has affected the supply of restaurant companies in these urban environments. It is also argued that both the number of restaurants and the degree of differentiation in the older (central) parts of Stockholm, have been adversely affected by interventions in the urban environment associated with modernist planning.

  • The Landed Municipality : The Underlying Rationales for Swedish Public Landownership and their Implications for Policy
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • This thesis examines the role of public land in housing development in Sweden, focusing on how public authorities perceive their role as landowners, and with what consequences. The thesis is inspired by the work of Doreen Massey and Alejandrina Catalano on different forms of landownership under capitalism, exploring the nature of the relationship between land and landowner when the latter is a public authority.Control of land provides its owner with power over the built environment, as well as the right to capture value increases. In Sweden, large amounts of land are owned by public authorities, in particular municipalities, which have traditionally owned land primarily for two reasons: a) to ensure citizens share in land value increases, thereby generating a more just distribution of resources; and b) to improve control over urban development, thereby delivering access to affordable housing. Even as the Swedish housing system has been substantially transformed since the 1990s, 280 out of 290 municipalities still own land for housing purposes. The study investigates both the historical and the contemporary roles that public land has played for housing development in Swedish cities. The methods used include an interpretive analysis of Swedish Governmental Investigation Reports and interviews with local politicians in charge of public land assets in three Swedish municipalities: Stockholm, Örebro and Uppsala. The study uses the empirical material to disaggregate public landownership under capitalism into three main modalities of ownership underpinned by three different landownership rationales: a moral rationale characterized by an ethic of long-term responsibility; a productive rationale characterized by an orientation towards achievement of practical social goals; and an investment rationale characterized by prioritization of asset value. What emerges from the thesis is a new narrative of how Sweden's public land management has changed over the past century, and what this entails today for local landowning municipalities acting within the contemporary legislative framework. As such, the study contributes to new ways of understanding the role of the public landowners in all their different forms, bringing questions of land back into the centre of urban political-economic research.

  • Cooperation and Conflict amid Water Scarcity
  • 2022
  • Doktorsavhandling (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Over two billion people remain without safe drinking water and more than four billion lack basic access to sanitation. Safely managing water is key for livelihoods, food security, energy production, and overall socio-economic development. This dissertation analyzes how scarce water resources affect cooperation and conflict. First, I study water scarcity in relation to communal violence. Second, I consider how water scarcity can be a source of cooperative behavior, a key ingredient to peace. This dissertation contributes to research on peace and conflict issues and across other disciplines, studying the consequences of water scarcity. Essay I shows how lacking groundwater access increases incidences of communal violence. This is the first study on armed conflict that combines data on groundwater, surface water, and precipitation. Essay II analyzes spatial spillover processes of conflict-inducing factors. The study introduces a theoretical framework explaining spillover dynamics of communal conflict. Furthermore, the analysis shows that drought explains violence not locally but through wider neighborhood exposure. Essay III suggests drought-prone regions could be harbingers for water cooperation even in places with a history of violence. This research is also the first to analyze water cooperation at the sub-national level, thereby providing more detailed insights into peaceful hydropolitics. Essay IV shifts to the individual level. Studying the effect of exposure to water scarcity on altruism, the essay contributes to our understanding of microdynamics in conflict and adds to social psychological research on altruism. In sum, the dissertation makes four broader contributions. First, the findings suggest we need to look beyond resource scarcity as a cause for conflict. Instead we ought to study the potential of peaceful resource sharing and cooperation. Second, the dissertation addresses political actions by both individuals and groups, while also considering those in relation to government action. Addressing different group levels is key because conflict or cooperation dynamics address different spheres of action (individual, group, state).  Third, the dissertation covers Africa, the Southern Mediterranean, and parts of the Middle East, thereby showing relevant findings for a larger geographic area than many previous studies. Lastly,  the dissertation contributes to research on water issues by focusing on access to groundwater, which has been largely neglected in previous research. The findings can provide insights into our understanding of sustainable water management and environmental peacebuilding. Climate change challenges how we engage with water and, therefore, we must find more sustainable ways to use this resource.
