  • Characters as fictional migrants : Atonement, adaptation and the screenplay process
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Journal of Screenwriting. - : Intellect Ltd.. - 1759-7137 .- 1759-7145. ; 11:1, s. 81-97
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • The migration metaphor has been widely used in connection with media adaptions, but the metaphor has remained an abstract figure of speech. Yet, to understand characters as migrants who go through journeys of acculturation when they are adapted for the screen may enhance understanding of both the characters' potential and problems that may arise during the development process. This article proposes that the development of characters and their processes - as fictional beings - can be understood through the use of models that describe real migrants' adaptation processes. Using Christopher Hampton's screenplay drafts for the film Atonement (2001), it outlines how such migratory journeys go hand in hand with screenwriters' problem-solving processes. The article thus develops the idea that migrating characters, in their capacity as fictional beings and the thematic issues that they represent, both adapt to and appropriate their new media environments; simultaneously, they are appropriated by new creative forces and by the conventions of those new media environments, who in turn must adapt to the characters in this process of bi-directional acculturation.

  • Mellan sekulära och religiösa förväntningar : Civilreligion på individnivå i Sverige
  • 2018
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - Lund : Sveriges Sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 55:1, s. 53-74
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article responds to recent calls for reconsidering the concept ‘civil religion’ to advance the understanding of how both religious and secular authorities shape individuals’ attitudes towards the religious. ‘Civil religion’ is defined as set of religious symbols and practices that can be studied at an individual level. The analysis utilized representative survey data collected in 2016–2017 in Sweden. Four basic forms of ‘civil religion’ were identified and justified in relation to expectations held by both religious and secular authorities in Sweden over time. The analysis showed that the identified forms of ‘civil religion’ differ in terms of social class, gender and age. The results are taken to raise further research questions about relationships between high socioeconomic status and criticism of religion and about low socioeconomic status and adherence to religious minorities in Sweden. In addition, it is stipulated that a civil religion approach to religious attitudes might shed new light on questions concerning contemporary covenants and shared ideas about the religious.

  • Den sårbara gemenskapen : kvinnojourer under covid-19-pandemin
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - Huddinge : Sveriges sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 58:1-2, s. 33-51
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract

  • Forest-Walks – An Intangible Heritage in Movement A Walk-and-Talk-Study of a social practice tradition
  • 2019
  • Ingår i: Landscapes: the Journal of the International Centre for Landscape and Language. - 1448-0778. ; 9:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article seeks to understand and extend current understandings of intangible heritage and particularly forest-walks as such. The study is related to Swedish conditions and has been conducted in Sweden. The research is grounded in social practice theory – and the perspective of practice architectures in particular – and it draws on the work of Stephen Kemmis (2009; 2014). The data are based on 12 walk-and-talk interviews conducted in the forest with individuals who willingly walk in the forest on their leisure time. The analysis takes its point of departure from representations by the participants regarding what they emphasise in relation to the practice of forest-walking. We find that the participants in this study have curated their heritage in landscapes, in this case a forest. Further, the study shows that intersections between cultural identity and landscape play a significant role in people’s lives.

  • Icebreakers and clusters within the Swedish music wonder
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Innovation in Music 2022 - Book of Abstracts. - Stockholm.
  • Konferensbidrag (refereegranskat)abstract
    • In our ongoing project Searching for Sophia in Music Production, we explore factors that have been of great significance for the Swedish music wonder. In this paper, the aim is to identify important individuals in various genres that have paved the way for Sweden’s international success in music. One hypothesis we are working with is that a few innovative individuals who acted as "icebreakers" created smaller "clusters" centered around record companies that were highly influential. We present a selection of musical icebreakers and clusters that have successfully contributed to the Swedish music wonder: Stig "Stikkan" Anderson and Polar Music International AB, Bert Karlsson and Mariann Records, Ola H.kansson with Sonet and Ten Music Group, Robert von Bahr with BIS Records, Per-Olof "Pelle" Karlsson with Prim Records and Dag Volle "Denniz PoP" with Cheiron Studios. The study is methodologically based on literature studies and an inventory of source material as well as interviews with key people in Swedish music life. Theoretical perspectives include Jennifer Lena’s and Richard Peterson's (2008) model for the life cycles of genres, with stages of creation, development, conservation and stagnation, Paul Thompson's model for creativity in record production (2019) and Mats Trondman's theories of folk musical expression (1999). In addition, the analysis also uses theories in motivational research (Deci & Ryan, 2000) and entrepreneurial research with relevance to music and music industry development (Tschmuck, 2006; Östman 2018). Our analysis clearly shows that single theories cannot explain all essential parts of the Swedish music wonder. A combination of several theories and explanatory models is therefore needed. In our presentation, core issues around this are discussed.

  • Broadening Ethnographic Following : From Following Conflicts to Following Agreements and Silences in Vaccination Debates
  • 2024
  • Ingår i: Ethnos. - : Taylor & Francis. - 0014-1844 .- 1469-588X. ; , s. 1-18
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • George Marcus’s methodology for multi-sited ethnography is widely discussed and applied in anthropology and the strategy of ‘following the conflict’ has been a fruitful approach to studying controversies and conflicts. Drawing on my shifting methodology in the initial stages of a digital ethnography project on vaccination-related online community forums, I explore ‘the war’ on vaccines using a broadened strategy that includes following agreements and silences within the controversy. By examining the debate in conjunction with medical anthropology research, I discuss how both vaccine-cautious and vaccine-confident forum members challenge conventional debate divisions, such as scientific–unscientific, evidential–anecdotal and genetic–environmental, while still adhering to medico-scientific discourses as zones of agreement. Whereas an agreement-oriented methodology contributes to research on liminal zones and reconfigured forms of bio-citizenship and literacy, the strategy of ‘following silences’ highlights the limits to liminality in a debate underpinned by adultism that silences the views of young people.

  • Strange Masks of Adapted Identities in Patrick McCabe’s Winterwood and The Holy City
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Adaptation. - : Oxford University Press (OUP). - 1755-0637 .- 1755-0645. ; 14:2
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Patrick McCabe’s novels dramatize how people make use of character archetypes, media ideals, and fiction to adapt to new realities. These concerns are especially notable in two of his later novels, The Holy City and Winterwood. In the protagonists’ process of social adaptation, they illustrate how the construction of self-identity is defined by narration, and how a world in flux demands constant re-negotiation of the narrative and adaptation to the new story to make self-identity, life patterns, and their contexts match. In effect, the narratives suggest that engagement in media adaptations can guide audiences to find strategies for social adaptation.
