  • Predictors of loneliness among older women and men in Sweden : A national longitudinal study
  • 2015
  • Ingår i: Aging & Mental Health. - : Routledge. - 1360-7863 .- 1364-6915. ; 19:5, s. 409-417
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Objectives: Longitudinal research on loneliness in old age has rarely considered loneliness separately for men and women, despite gender differences in life experiences. The objective of this study was to examine the extent to which older women and men (70+) report feelings of loneliness with a focus on: (a) changes in reported loneliness as people age, and (b) which factors predict loneliness.Method: Data from the 2004 and 2011 waves of SWEOLD, a longitudinal national survey, was used (n = 587). The prediction of loneliness in 2011 by variables measured in 2004 and 2004–2011 variable change scores was examined in three logistic regression models: total sample, women and men. Variables in the models included: gender, age, education, mobility problems, depression, widowhood and social contacts. Results: Older people moved into and out of frequent loneliness over time, although there was a general increase in loneliness with age. Loneliness at baseline, depression increment and recent widowhood were significant predictors of loneliness in all three multivariable models. Widowhood, depression, mobility problems and mobility reduction predicted loneliness uniquely in the model for women; while low level of social contacts and social contact reduction predicted loneliness uniquely in the model for men. Conclusion: This study challenges the notion that feelings of loneliness in old age are stable. It also identifies important gender differences in prevalence and predictors of loneliness. Knowledge about such differences is crucial for the development of effective policy and interventions to combat loneliness in later life.

  • Young people in suburbs feel discriminated, but hopeful
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - : Sveriges Sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 54:4, s. 341-346
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Based on research in Swedish multi-ethnic areas, this paper examines discourses of unrest among youth in multi-ethnic, tower-block suburbs. While there is a focus on the mechanisms of racialized social exclusion among the youth, the preoccupation among local actors including social workers, police, principals and representatives of NGOs as is with the ‘area of exclusion’ itself as causing the problems of urban unrest. Such problematizing highlights broader policy changes in Sweden, where the main responsibility for welfare is put on the individual, rather than on the collective and the state.

  • En människa bland andra? : Äldre människors begripliggörande av vardagen under covid-19-krisen
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - Huddinge : Sociologisk Forskning, Swedish Sociological Association. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 58:1-2, s. 53-76
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article examines how older people make sense of their situation in calls to a helpline a few months into the Covid-19 pandemic. By drawing on the sociology of everyday life to analyse callers’ various understandings of the crisis, the article nuances current knowledge about older people’s situation. The thematic analysis shows that the callers make sense of the crisis linked to social relations on a personal, anonymous, and abstract level. The callers’ responses to challenges to their everyday routines – adjustment or critical evaluation – are connected to different approaches to trust: basic trust in a shared social reality with someone or regulating trust in a set of norms independent from that other. Whereas the calls demonstrate very few positive adjustments in personal relations, they show that anonymous and abstract relations serve as important resources for both maintaining and re-evaluating everyday life during a crisis. Although older people’s lack of secure personal relations during the pandemic points to vulnerability, their resourcefulness is apparent in their active engagement in important anonymous and abstract relations.

  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Burnout as occupational injury and narrative of resistanceDuring the last years of the 1990s and the first years of the 2000s, burnout was a common diagnosis for sick listing in Sweden. That burnout is directly related to working life was acknowledged by medical experts as well as in the public debate. The number of applications for occupational compensation due to social and organizational factors in work rose from a very modest degree to nearly a forth of the claims among occupational diseases. In this article 48 individual claims for compensation in cases of burnout as occupational disease are analyzed as narratives of resistance. In this respect they are seen as alternative accounts of risk in working life, but also as narratives about resistance. The concept, narratives of resistance, is used to understand the claimants’ argumentation for rights to compensation, as well as how the claimants draw upon public narratives of societal transformation to understand how they themselves have become ill from occupations that normally are not thought to be hazardous. One conclusion from the analysis is that the claimants regard their illness as the resistance of the body against changes in society and working life.

  • Women have a stronger say in couples’ decisions to have a child
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - : Sveriges Sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 54:4, s. 307-312
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden stands out as a forerunner in the development of gender equality and family dynamics. To deepen the knowledge on power distribution and gender dynamics of couple relations, we investigate how women and men’s childbearing intentions influence actual childbearing behavior. The Young Adult Panel Study (YAPS) has information on both partners’ childbearing intentions in 2009, which we follow for five years with register data on childbearing. The results indicate that women’s childbearing intentions are more important than men’s intentions in determining actual childbirths.

  • Social tjänst till salu : Om socialt arbete i upphandlingens tid
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - Huddinge : Sveriges Sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 58:3, s. 267-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Social service for sale. On social work in times of procurementMarket reforms within the Swedish welfare sector have paved the way for models based on buying and selling welfare services. Public procurement constitutes a hub for commissioning and providing social services. The aim of this article is to explore how social work is shaped within a procurement context. Attention is directed to how social workers providing procured services describe their work. The empirical material consists of interviews with 16 providers of social services within different areas of a procured social work. The results show how procurement shapes the provision of social work, in terms of specifications of time and quantity, a quantification of the work performed with clients and how the framework of procurement shapes the client as a commission and a case. It is further shown how providers compensate for and deal with the framework of procured social work to meet the clients’ needs. The results raise questions about the possibilities for procured social work regarding the services’ demarcation, specialisation, and time frame.

  • Dokumentationens roll för klientskapande processer i äldreinriktat socialt arbete : Spelar utlandsfödd bakgrund, kön och ålder någon roll?
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - Huddinge : Sociologisk Forskning, Swedish Sociological Association. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 58:3, s. 287-310
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
