- Increasing numbers of people in welfare societies express worries about their ecological footprint. Some make efforts to significantly reduce their consumption. Because people have been socialized into a society of mass/excess consumption, there are great challenges. How can someone learn to downsize when society incessantly compels her to continue with mass consumption habits? This article demonstrates, theoretically and empirically, how social relations, within a societal context of mass consumption, shape the conditions for transforming lifestyles to reduce consumption. It contributes to sociology as well as a growing interdisciplinary literature on reduced consumption by focusing specifically on challenges related to social relations. The study uses a qualitative approach and an interview study of 24 people in Sweden making significant efforts to reduce their consumption. Findings – both perceived challenges and creative ways of coping with them – are related to four analytical themes: (1) the intersection of everyday rituals and consumption; (2) the norms and normality of mass consumption; (3) social comparison and status consumption; and (4) social and community support for reducing consumption.

- Sociologisk Forskning bad fyra sociologer i Sverige att svara på några korta frågor om coronapandemin och vårt samhälles hantering av den.Deras tidigare forskning har på olika sätt berört olika frågor såsom socialmedicin och medicinsk kunskapsproduktion, sociala nätverks betydelse för smittspridning, samhällets hantering av kriser och risker, genusaspekter av samhällskriser samt dynamiken mellan expertis, politiker och medborgare i beslutsfattande och debatter kring frågor där expertkunskap är centralt. Utifrån svaren på frågorna redigerade tidskriftens redaktörer en sammanhängande text, som de fyra forskarna sedan kunde ändra och göra tillägg i. Resultatet är en gemensam text som påminner om ett samtal. Den slutliga texten färdigställdes den 8 april 2020 .De fyra medverkande forskarna är Erna Danielsson, docent i sociologi vid Mittuni-versitetet och föreståndare för Risk and Crisis Research Centre (RCR), som forskar om samhällets krishantering vid såväl vardagskriser som större händelser och specifikt genus och krishantering; Fredrik Liljeros, professor i sociologi vid Stockholms universitet, som genomförde sitt postdoktorprojekt på dåvarande Smittskyddsinstitutet tillsammans med nuvarande statsepidemiologen Anders Tegnell och i dag bedriver forskning om hur människors kontaktnätverk påverkar spridningsdynamik; Shai Mulinari, docent i sociologi vid Lunds universitet, som bedriver forskning om medicinsk kunskapsproduktion, läkemedelsindustrin, epidemiologi och folkhälsa; samt Linda Soneryd, professor i sociologi vid Göteborgs universitet, som forskat om miljörelaterade risker och kriser samt om hur demokrati och deltagande förstås i anslutning till expertfrågor.

- In this paper, we examine the phenomenon of representation through the theoretical lens of ambivalence, concentrating on the people involved in representation: representatives. We argue that the theoretical concept of ambivalence can be helpful in analysing and understanding the various tensions environmental and other representatives encounter in their practice. Based on the concepts of “sociological ambivalence”, “ideological dilemma”, and “the organizational centaur”, as well as on insights from social studies of science and sustainability studies, the paper develops a typology of three potential sources of ambivalence: role conflicts, value conflicts, and conflicts between goals and means. In addition, the paper identifies various ways of coping with ambivalence, including the construction of meta-norms, organizational and network support, pragmatism, drawing boundaries for reasonable and acceptable actions, rule bending and discursive negotiation. The paper concludes that the concept of ambivalence adds crucial insights to the positions, practices, and challenges of environmental representatives and notes that ambivalence is not only a matter of tensions and conflicts but can be a source of reflexivity, learning, and agency.

- "Det sociala" tillhör de begrepp som samhällsvetenskapen utgår från men sällan känner något behov av att förklara. Ofta är socialiteten den samhällsvetenskapliga praktikens utgångspunkt och mål, men dess innebörd kan inte fastställas utan att överskrida gränserna till t.ex. filosofi, historia och religion. Kanske är avsaknaden av en kontinuerlig reflektion över det socialas innebörd rent av ett försvar av det samhällsvetenskapliga fältet. I denna bok diskuterar tio samhällsvetare och humanister det socialas betydelse från Immanuel Kant till Slavoj Zizek. Det handlar om tio sätt att tänka kring det sociala, om tio sociologiker. Detta skulle kunna tolkas som att det sociala är det objekt bokens olika bidrag behandlar ur respektive perspektiv. Men det kan också ges en snävare tolkning. Det verkliga objektet för undersökningarna blir då själva relationen mellan det sociala och vetandet. Med detta synsätt kan det sociala inte uppfattas som ett neutralt eller autonomt faktum utanför tänkandet. Snarare blir socialiteten något som framträder först i vetandets konkreta gränsdragningar och skillnadsskapanden. Denna bok är ett mångbottnat bidrag till diskussionen om vad samhället är och om möjligheterna att förändra det. Self-Selection or Socialization? : The Longitudinal Relation Between Civic Engagement and Political Orientations Among Adolescents

- Social capital theory states that civic engagement generates positive outcomes, such as social trust and political interest. Likewise, studies show that those involved in civic engagement generally report higher levels of social trust and political interest. It is still unclear, however, whether these differences are the result of socialization or selection. We used between-effects and fixed-effects regressions to examine the development of political orientations in a three-wave longitudinal sample of 1,050 adolescents. From our results, volunteering seemed to have no socialization effect whatsoever on political interest and potentially a weak enhancing effect on social trust. Associational membership did not predict social trust over time, but it seemed to socialize members into increased political interest over time. The results are discussed in light of the social capital debate about how civic engagemend in associational life and volunteering do - or do not - function as schools of democracy.

- The aim of this study is to attain a better understanding of the relationship between competing or complementary scientific explanatory claims. First, six different ways of approaching explanatory claims are briefly described and found, in part, to be unsatisfactory. It is argued that they should be supplemented by an analysis of underlying and sometimes partly unacknowledged causal presuppositions. This approach could be termed a causal analytical investigation, and in order to demonstrate its potential, it is applied to a concrete example: research into dental anxiety. The analysis shows that seemingly competing or complementary explanatory claims here neither compete with nor complement each other; instead, the analysis demonstrates that they explain different things. We then broaden the picture by discussing the relationship between aetiology and treatment. Finally we argue in favour of the general applicability of the approach and its relevance to science in general and to science-based practice.

How does driving license withdrawal affect subjective well-being? A Swedish comparative survey study of visual field loss

- Research has found strong relationships between access to transport, accessibility of activities, and subjective well-being (SWB), and society is said to be car dependent. Accordingly, this study investigates, in a Swedish context, whether and how withdrawal of a driving license for a private car due to visual field loss (VFL) affects SWB. A web survey was used for statistical comparisons of three respondent groups (n = 436): people with a driving license, people with a driving license and VFL, and people whose driving license was withdrawn due to VFL. The inclusion criterion for all participants was that they should have a diagnosis that could cause VFL. The no-license group had lower overall SWB than did respondents with driving licenses. The no-license group also perceived less access to transport means in order to live a life to be satisfied with than did the other groups. The most used transport means in the no-license group was getting a lift in a car, though this group had a strong desire to drive a car. Few respondents in the license groups wanted to use specific transport means to a greater extent, car driving being the most used transport means. Some inter-group differences were seen regarding how access to activities (measured by frequency of actual trips) affected SWB. This study found a significant negative effect of driving license withdrawal on SWB. However, the results imply that qualitative aspects other than the relationship between the frequencies of trips and activities might also affect SWB, and more research on this subject is needed.

- More than gender equality. Decisions on parental leave and ideals around motherhood, fatherhood and the best interest of the child On the basis of 40 semi-structured interviews, this study discusses decision making processes regarding parental leave among nascent first-time middle-class parents in Sweden. We analyze motives and ideas behind the couples’ plans and decisions and how decisions on parental leave were made. We furthermore show how the decision making processes can be discussed in relation to the institutional context. The results show that ideals and norms of gender equality are accompanied by gendered divisions of work and care and a partially traditional view on motherhood and fatherhood. Contrary to previous studies, we do not find a clear link between gender equal ideals and explicit negotiations. An equal division of parental leave is, in some couples, taken for granted to such an extent that the decision on how to divide the leave is taken implicitly rather than explicitly. Decisions on division of parental leave are not isolated processes. Rather, ideals and norms around motherhood, fatherhood, gender equality and not least what is ‘in the best interest of the child’ constitute part of the context in which these decision making processes take place.
