  • Forestry and the environment : Tensions in a transforming modernity
  • 2017
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - Sweden : Swedish Sociological Association. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 54:4, s. 283-286
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sweden is often described as an environmental forerunner and one of the most ecologically modernized countries in the world, one where social welfare, economic growth and environmental protection mutually support each other. Examining the case of Swedish forestry, we discuss a number of tensions in this sector that mirror some general tensions in Swedish society and explore how these tensions can be understood as part of a transforming modernity.

    • Rejoinder: The need for Sociologisk ForskningIn this rejoinder, it is argued that there is still a need for a disciplinary journal for Swedish sociology. The authors agree upon the need to revitalise Sociologisk Forskning, but are critical to the proposal to transform it into a more popular scientific journal, with an aim to become a part of the general public debate. The internationalisation and specialisation of the Swedish sociological community have implied that sociological research, to a large degree, is carried out within subdisciplinary or interdiscipinary fields. Networks, journals, conferences have developed within these fields, which has led to the Swedish sociological association and Sociologisk Forskning loosing parts of their relevance. The authors suggest that the creation of a stationary editorial board, with professional competence and better economic opportunities, will raise the quality and intra-disciplinary relevance of the journal.

  • Mellan sociologi och ekologi? Om det sociologiska studiet av miljöfrågan
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - : Sveriges Sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 32:2, s. 7-36
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Sociology, as it came to be constructed from the late 19th century onwards, deliberately concentrated on human societies, giving little attention to the natural world which constitutes the very condition of its existence and development. Today, some sociologists claim that the environmental problems of today constitute a challenge to this classical sociological understanding. By critically discussing environmental sociologists’ claim for the necessity to include biophysical facts in sociological analysis, this article seeks to elaborate a sociological perspective on environmental problems. From the point of view of epistemology and the sociology of knowledge, the article contrasts naive realism with social constructivism. It is here stated that even though social constructivism seems to be more in line with sociological thought a realistic standpoint regarding the environmental threat seem to be a necessity. By way of conclusion it is stated that a proper sociological understanding has to take into account nature’s constructedness as well as realistic side. Thus nature cannot be understood outside of society or society outside of nature.

  • 1999
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - : Sveriges Sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 36:4, s. 40-75

    • Towards a transboundary democracy? Political responses to global environmental threats.Global environmental threats challenge the national state and the traditional understanding of democracy. Whereas many environmental problems transcend time and space, democracy is bound to the geographical borders of the national state as well as to its citizens/voters of today. The aim of this paper is to elaborate in what regards environmental problems challenge democracy and the sovereignty of national states, and critically discuss proposals for political reorganization. By analyzing two cases of global political mobilization against specific environmental threats, the possibilities for global responses to environmental threats are elucidated. By way of conclusion, the question is raised whether this kind of global alliances and actions implies a fragmentation of our understanding of the world, or if they are promising signs of a development towards global responsibility and cosmopolitan democracy.

  • Samhället utmanat? : Artificiell intelligens och sociologisk kunskap
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - Huddinge : Sveriges Sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 57:2, s. 99-120
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Society challenged? Artificial intelligence and sociological knowledgeArtificial intelligence (AI) is a growing social phenomenon, both as a technical infrastructure and as a sociotechnical imaginary. While there is ample sociological research on AI’s implications for different societal sectors, there has been limited sociological discussion on AI itself. This article engages with the current debate on superintelligence – a future AI that transcends human intelligence – to show that the development of AI concerns central sociological issues, and that sociological thinking contributes to and challenges prevailing concepts of AI.

  • Skapandet av tillit i en riskkontext. Om social riskacceptans vid lokalisering av anläggningar för radioaktivt och miljöfarligt avfall
  • 1993
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - : Sveriges Sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 30:4, s. 33-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Skapandet av tillit i en riskkontext. Om social riskacceptans vid lokalisering av anläggningar för radioaktivt och miljöfarligt avfallTaking Beck’s and Giddens’ recent formulation of the society’s new conditions for gaining trust as theoretical point of departure, this article focusses trust and risk with regard to hazardous and radioactive waste disposal in Sweden. Seeing trust as intimately connected with cognitive understanding of risks, the information strategies of the companies with responsibility for hazardous and radioactive waste management are analysed. Central in gaining trust is the creation of access points - points of connection between lay individuals or collectivities and the representatives of expert systems - at which trust can be built up or maintained. This article emphasizes that this kind of locational conflict is to be seen as a struggle concerning the cognitive understanding of risk-generating activities, and the question is to what extent the cognitive understanding of nuclear companies will be accepted among the affected local population and to what extent the local population will develop and maintain an alternative cognitive understanding.

  • Sociologins objekt eller politikens begrepp? Reflektioner kring begreppet ”civilt samhälle”
  • 1995
  • Ingår i: Sociologisk forskning. - : Sveriges Sociologförbund. - 0038-0342 .- 2002-066X. ; 32:1, s. 31-55
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Civil society - Object of sociology or concept in politics? This paper starts by investigating the different meanings and usages of the concept of ”civil society.” An overview singles out the two dominant perspectives in current discussions: the neoliberal and the neomarxist perspectives. Thereafter, the paper examines what sociologists mean when claiming that civil society is the object of sociological thought. A third perspective emerges here, namely civil society as the sphere in which social integration takes place. Attention is then turned to some critical remarks recently raised against the concept by Swedish sociologists, critizing it for being highly ambiguous and lacking analytical dimensions. This paper argues that this critique is misleading - it totally ignores the meaning of the concept put forward in the neomarxist perspective. I conclude that despite the fact that some of the meanings applied to the concept can be characerized a sun-sociological, there are other meanings that fit very well with sociological thought.
