  • Promoting social engagement for young adults living in social isolation: Social workers and health care professionals' perceptions of success factors
  • 2019
  • Konferensbidrag (övrigt vetenskapligt/konstnärligt)abstract
    • Background: Today the global number of young adults not in employment, education or training seem to increase. A large proportion of the group are unemployed and disengaged and have not been in contact with any authority. Thus, they are invisible to many community services and official agencies. The situation standing outside the society may have negative long-term health effects and statistics shows that more than a third of the target group after ten years still not work or study. Socially withdrawn youth is a complex phenomenon and very few young adults seek help, often due to their lack of motivation. For this reason, unemployed and inactive young people are often described as being a difficult group to support and engage. Further, there is currently limited evidence on the effects of interventions directed to socially withdrawn youth not in employment or education and the use of evidence-based practice has to be improved.Aim: The aim of this study was to investigate social workers and health care professionals’ experiences of working with young adults living in social isolation, and to identify which interventions the professionals find most successful in supporting the young adults’ engagement in society. Methods: In this study a qualitative method was used. Ten semi-structured interviews were conducted that included thirteen employees from social services and outpatient psychiatric clinics in a Swedish county. Data were analyzed using thematic network analysis. Results: Analysis resulted in two general thematic networks: ”barriers of the transition into adulthood” and ”to manage complex needs”. Participants tended to associate the issues of young adults with difficulties related to transition into adulthood. Mental health problems, low self-esteem, school related problems and limited social networks also came out in the interviews as factors that characterized unemployed and disengaged socially withdrawn youths. Participants described that successful work to re-engage these young adults included an empowerment-oriented perspective with a focus on the individual strengths, integrated and coordinated interventions and a flexible working approach. Conclusion: Today the societal changes and the process of individualization place greater demands on individual resources and capabilities which might increase the risk of social exclusion. Participants indicated that the complex problems of socially isolated young adults and experiences of long-term disengagement may contribute to stable and persistent withdrawal from society. Early identification and support for youths at risk of social withdrawal, a holistic approach, multifaceted interventions and tailored and flexible activities is deemed crucial to help reintegrate these young people. Further investigation is required to examine the effects of interventions targeting socially withdrawn and inactive young adults.

  • Playing the complex game of social status in school – a qualitative study
  • 2020
  • Ingår i: Global Health Action. - : Taylor & Francis. - 1654-9716 .- 1654-9880. ; 13:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Research suggests that social status in school plays an important role in the social lives of adolescents and that their social status is associated with their health. Additional knowledge about adolescents’ understanding of social hierarchies could help to explain inequalities in adolescents’ health and guide public health interventions. Objective: The study aimed to explore what contributes to subjective social status in school and the strategies used for social positioning. Methods: A qualitative research design with think-aloud interviews was used. The study included 57 adolescents in lower (7th grade) and upper secondary school (12th grade) in Sweden. Subjective social status was explored using a slightly modified version of the MacArthur Scale of Subjective Social Status in school. Data were analyzed using thematic network analysis. Results: The participants were highly aware of their social status in school. Elements tied to gender, age, ethnicity and parental economy influenced their preconditions in the positioning. In addition, expectations on how to look, act and interact, influenced the pursue for social desirability. The way these different factors intersected and had to be balanced suggests that social positioning in school is complex and multifaceted. Conclusions: Because the norms that guided social positioning left little room for diversity, the possible negative impact of status hierarchies on adolescents’ health needs to be considered. In school interventions, we suggest that norms on e.g. gender and ethnicity need to be addressed and problematized from an intersectional approach.

  • Social workers’ perceptions of assessing the parental capacity of parents with intellectual disabilities in child protection investigations
  • 2022
  • Ingår i: Journal of Intellectual Disabilities. - : Sage Publications. - 1744-6295 .- 1744-6309.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim Parental capacity is one of the main aspects assessed by social workers as part of child protection investigations. The aim of this study is to explore the social workers’ perceptions of assessing the parental capacity of parents with intellectual disabilities in child protection investigations.Design/methodology Four focus group interviews were conducted with twelve social workers in May-October 2021. Data were analysed using an inductive, conventional qualitative content analysis. Results One overarching theme, “Parental capacity in relation to the child’s needs was assessed, not disability of parents” was created. Three main categories and ten sub-categories were identified exploring the social workers’ perceptions of assessing parental capacity. Conclusions The study shows that social workers perceive the assessment of parental capacity in parents with intellectual disabilities as demanding and complex, in which the assessment of what is good enough is perceived as the most difficult task.

  • Between an educational task and an idea for treatment : multiprofessional collaboration for supporting children "at risk" – a coordinator role in pedagogical practice
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Scandinavian Journal of Educational Research. - : Routledge. - 0031-3831 .- 1470-1170.
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • This article contributes knowledge regarding professionals’ experiences, conceptions, and expectations of a coordinator role in preschools/schools while multiprofessionally collaborating for supporting children "at risk". Data were collected via semi-structured interviews with professionals involved in a project in a Swedish municipality intended to prevent children from getting into difficulties. Procedures for thematic analysis were followed, and Billig’s ideological dilemmas were used as a methodological tool. A coordinator role, assigned to head teachers, emerges as tense where dilemmas need to be addressed. The dilemmas are related to opposed, overarching ideas – education for "all" versus treatment for specific children – which require coordination. This article suggests that dialogues between actors need to be held when opposite positions can be articulated. To initiate and maintain such dialogues, a coordinator role is important.

  • Dialectical Processes in Parent-child Relationships among Somali Families in Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: Journal of Child and Family Studies. - : Springer Nature. - 1062-1024 .- 1573-2843. ; 30:7, s. 1752-1762
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Non-voluntary migration has been demonstrated to have an impact on family relationships as a result of children acculturating to the host country faster than their parents. Studies have reported on immigrant parents’ perceptions of their parenting in host countries. However, less is known about how both children and parents view and make sense of their relationships in new contexts. This exploratory qualitative study aims to capture the dialectical processes in parent-child relationships among Somali families in Sweden. Data were collected using focus group discussions with youth (n = 47) and their parents (n = 33). The data were analysed using a thematic analysis. Two themes, each with three themes of their own, were identified from the analysis: finding a balance between hierarchical and egalitarian relationships and sharing of spaces. Youth and parents described different factors, including contextual changes, generational gaps, peer pressure and lack of a father figures, as affecting their relationships with each other and sometimes creating conflicts between them. Both perceived themselves as active agents in contributing to family life after migrating to Sweden. In general, the youth expressed their emotional needs, the motivations desired from their parents and their desire to be equally treated as sons and daughters. Overall, this study demonstrates that there is a need to offer immigrant families culturally tailored parenting support programmes, thereby strengthening parent-child relationships.

  • Integrerat föräldraskapsstöd i SFI-verksamheten
  • 2024

  • A Qualitative Study of Professionals' Experiences and Challenges in the Early Identification of Psychosocial Concerns in Children
  • 2023
  • Ingår i: Health & Social Care in the Community. - : Hindawi Publishing Corporation. - 0966-0410 .- 1365-2524. ; 2023
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Aim. Early intervention and detecting early signs are often cited as a goal by professionals working with children, but detecting and describing early signs is not well explored. Thus, the study’s aim was to explore professionals’ experiences and challenges in the early identification of psychosocial concerns in children aged 0–16.Materials and Methods. Data were collected from semistructured interviews with 26 professionals (e.g., nurses, psychologists, social workers, teachers, principals, and managers) working with children. The participants engaged in a pilot cooperation model between preschools, schools, social services, and healthcare to reach out early to children in need of support. The interviews were analyzed using thematic network analysis.Results. Four organizing themes were created as follows: “The idea of promoting and preventing is the key to success,” “Identifying the children who need support and intervention,” “Identifying observable early signs,” and “Occupied with children needing immediate support.” The organizing themes were interpreted into one global theme as follows: “All want an early intervention but putting it into practice is challenging.”Conclusion. The study shows that it is difficult to identify children in need of psychosocial support at an early stage because the early signs are difficult to detect. Thus, our results suggest that both preventive interventions targeting all children and specific interventions for those in need of support are needed to promote health and wellbeing.

  • A sense of health and coherence in young schoolchildren in Sweden
  • 2021
  • Ingår i: International Journal of Circumpolar Health. - : Taylor & Francis Group. - 1239-9736 .- 2242-3982. ; 80:1
  • Tidskriftsartikel (refereegranskat)abstract
    • Background: Little is known about how younger schoolchildren in a rural setting experience their sense of coherence (SOC), how they think and reason about health and what they perceive as important to achieve health goals. This study aimed to investigate children’s SOC and their health perceptions.Method: In this mixed-method study 94 children (8-12 years) from three rural schools answered several questionnaires: The Child-SOC (CSOC), Positive Health Scale (PHS) and Cantril’s ladder of life scale. Another 23 children (of 94) participated in four focus group interviews. Thematic analysis was used to identify themes from the interview transcripts. Results: High SOC was reported by 48% of the boys and 22% of the girls. However, no significant gender differences were found. Four themes were generated from the qualitative analysis: Understanding health, Managing health, Doing bodily health and Socialising health. Both younger and older children had a holistic view of health in which health was seen as an individual’s living habits in which social contacts mattered. Conclusion: In a rural context children need to adapt to activities that exist in their immediate environment. Thus, activities during school hours can be an important complement in health promotion.
